Kate Atkinson behind the scenes at the museum (think that's what it's called).

albertschoice · 14/04/2016 22:21

I am Pilgrim - a real page turner and very popular with everyone I know who has read it

Lazyafternoon · 14/04/2016 22:21

Or Time travellers wife. Sorry can't remember author. Film was terrible, but book great.

Shizzy · 14/04/2016 22:22

Loved Chronicles of St Mary's. MrsPinotGrigio do you know of anything else similar?

Yambabe · 14/04/2016 22:22

Tom Holt, anything by Tom Holt. I particularly like "Expecting Someone Taller" and "Doughnut" and the one about Karen the Rain Dragon (can't remember what it's called off the top of my head though!) but really anything.

Comedy sci-fi/fantasy with a bit of mythology and the occasional drop of custard. he's ace Smile

jellyjiggles · 14/04/2016 22:23

Girl in the box series and it's free!

EverySongbirdSays · 14/04/2016 22:23

Detective stories but not too gory have you tried the Folly series?

Starts with Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch Magic Police Dept - Ghosts and paranormal occurences thrown in. I think there are 5 currently didnt much care for the last for reasons I cant explain without spoilers

lamiashiro · 14/04/2016 22:24

Alex Marwood.

LavenderRains · 14/04/2016 22:24

Peter James. I've read all his books (and I met himSmile
His Roy Grace series are detective stories, all based in Brighton
I love 'em

BaldricksWife · 14/04/2016 22:24

Another vote for Robert Goddard, Harlan Coben also good and Barbara Erskine! I could go on all night-

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 14/04/2016 22:27

Johan Theorin - Echoes From The Dead
Michelle Paver - Dark Matter
Shirley Jackson - We Have Always Lived In The Castle
Kathleen Tessaro - Elegance or The Flirt (light read!)

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 14/04/2016 22:28

I'm having a Daphne Du Maurier revival as well. Just really enjoyed Jamaica Inn.

Ihangmyknickersontheline · 14/04/2016 22:28

Quite enjoyed 'I let you go' recently. Easy read, thriller type with a twist. Can't remember author though.

CocktailQueen · 14/04/2016 22:28

The Ngaio Marsh Inspector Alleyn mystery series
Dick Francis
Peter may
Lee child

pigsDOfly · 14/04/2016 22:31

I've also recently read, well the book before last, Miss Peregrines home for peculiar children and enjoyed it. Not my usual sort of thing but a good, well written fantasy read.

If you like something very challenging OP The Book of You by Claire Kendal is the last book I read. Intelligently written, unputdownable and truly disturbing - it actually did disturb my sleep a couple of night running while I was reading it. Very powerful book. Not for the faint hearted.

MrsPinotGrigio · 14/04/2016 22:32

Shizzy I don't sorry but I do know there's a new book out on May 5th - I got an email from Amazon about it & I'm quite excited about it Smile

AuntJane · 14/04/2016 22:33

If you like police mysteries but no Gore, ghosts but no horror, and some humour throuwn in, try Ben Aaronovitch starting with Rivers of London.

Ihangmyknickersontheline · 14/04/2016 22:34

yes, The Book of You was great stuff!

MrsPinotGrigio · 14/04/2016 22:34

I've also just read Follow You Home & Behind Closed Doors - can't remember who wrote them (different authors) but both really good thrillers.

upaladderagain · 14/04/2016 22:36

The Dalziel and Pascoe novels by Reginald Hill were done on TV several years ago, but the books are better. Good crime stories and absolutely hilarious too.

pigsDOfly · 14/04/2016 22:38

Okay, just read your post about the type of books you like OP, very slow typist, would not recommend you read The book of You in that case. Although as a book I think it's brilliant.

If you like detectives have you tried the books of Barbara Nadel? Well written, enjoyable detective stories. Never disappoints.

teeththief · 14/04/2016 22:40

The Lie

MrsPinotGrigio · 14/04/2016 22:45

I love crime thrillers, but strangely only US ones. Try Karen Rose (bit gory but really good) & Lisa Gardner. I also enjoyed the Camel Club series by David Baldachi & Lee Childs Reacher novels.

Iliketeaagain · 14/04/2016 22:49

Before I go to sleep. I noticed someone else recommended it. I couldn't stop reading, to the point I had to put my iPad in another room before bed so j would go to sleep..
