I am visiting somewhere that has a large ikea.
I've read several threads but wondered what should I buy?
I need storage and some basic dishes etc.
Also if anyone could recommend anything from ikea what would it be?

I love their waffle towels. I find it is pretty good for lights and light fittings. Storage stuff of all sorts. Plants. Office stuff. Kitchen stuff.

And if you don't need any of the above... tealights (natch); rhubarb tarts; ginger biscuits; I really like their rye crispbread.

As I am moving house, their packing cases are brilliant value; and the Pappi boxes, intended for storing A4 papers, are just great for books - sturdy, easy to carry and stack; and a size whereby they are not too heavy even with hardbacks. A gift at €0.99 each.

Bottomless cups of tea/coffee/pop in the café. In our Ikea (Bavaria) they do a breakfast deal with 2 Bavarian white sausages, a pretzel, a pint of wheat beer (yes, for breakfast) and the local newspaper for about €5. It's a clever lossleader - all the pensioner ladies dump their husbands in the restaurant in the morning and head off to shop.

Oh, and my student kids swear by the hot dog party packet for €20. That consists of 32 hot dog sausages, 32 hot dog rolls, a bottle of ketchup, a bottle of mustard, a jar of gherkins and four packets of crispy roasted onions.

I like their duvet covers.

Sometimes (not always!) you can get some lovely scandi fabrics. Storage for kids rooms is always a good find at Ikea. I quite like the crockery and glassware. I've got some lovely lampshades in the past also.

Daim Bars :) the mini ones!!!
And straws we always end up with straws

Toomanycats99 · 13/04/2016 21:12

Oooh yes huge bags of mini daim!

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 13/04/2016 21:20

Pax wardrobes - endlessly versatile, enormous capacity, strong and they come in a huge variety of doors etc.

LostInTheColonies · 13/04/2016 21:21

We don't have Ikea here (NZ) Sad Sad Sad
I manage to cope by visiting on trips to Aus. Meatballs, dill sauce (I can get it through customs), kitchen accessories, lights, bed linen - anything I can fit in my bags. Next time will be a LOT of fabric.

I've emailed them to ask WHEN they will open over here, asked in stores. I even know who holds the apparently unused franchise. But still no Sad

3 way USB plug / charger

Don't give up hope LostintheColonies.
We finally got one in Ireland a couple of years ago.

Scholes34 · 13/04/2016 22:25

Agree with wastin on the 3-way usb plug/charger. Also, packets of espresso coffee!

For DC storage trofast units.

For clutter storage kallax.

The billy bookcases and gnedby? DVD storage are good.

A lack table - their only £5 (maybe £6).

I have two of their 50p cutlery trays in my cutlery draw (side by side), which makes it very tidy. I've also used them in other storage drawers too.

The do some nice rugs, cheaply too (they also sell some horrible extortionately priced ones too).

Sandwich bag clips.

Artificial house plants and flowers. I have some that people have to touch before they will believe they are fake, not real living ones.

They have some nice dish drying racks too.

Make sure you have a good mooch, there are tonnes of fantastic little bits and bobs all over the shop.

The Kitchen storage ideas are really good.

Obviously I meant for storage of all the plastic tat toys the DC have, not to store the actual DC. Blush That would be wrong.

bloodynoris · 13/04/2016 23:33

Make sure you sign up for a family card before paying. It sometimes gives you a better price and also gives you guarantee that if you break something on the way home your covered.

I love they photo frames. I always end up with new photo frames, candles and candle holders.

ouryve · 13/04/2016 23:34

The plastic plates, bowls and cups are fabulous - 90p and really sturdy, no sharp edges etc.

We went on Monday and DS1 grabbed a box of kex.

ouryve · 13/04/2016 23:35

Picked up some clips, too - much cheaper than the Lakeland ones.

MrsSippy · 13/04/2016 23:36

the fabric drawer boxes to keep your knickers and socks tidy

ForTheSakeOfFuck · 13/04/2016 23:36

Read that as "what should I burn from IKEA". Got quite excited for an imaginary pyro-fest there, for a minute.

ForTheSakeOfFuck · 13/04/2016 23:37

Also, the alpha-biscuits. Taste fab.

Slowtrain2dawn · 13/04/2016 23:41

Cuddly toy, teasmaid, picnic hamper...sorry wrong decade

Bambambini · 13/04/2016 23:41

Blue cheese greater with lid that doubles as a container.

hogbreath · 14/04/2016 06:47

the melting straws for kids. also plastic plates and bowls. Dont forget the meatballs with jelly gravy and chips.

JuxtapositionRecords · 14/04/2016 06:55

The ginger thins and the packet meatball gravy. Mmmmm.

Fraggled · 14/04/2016 07:03

Big brown pillar candle that smells of chocolate cookies. It really does, and the house smells so homely.

tillyann2013 · 14/04/2016 07:20

The bedlinen is lovely and washes really well.
