We had a oven for sale on gumtree it was brand new brought it from the bargain corner but wildest put kitchen was being done couldn't find the repicet as everything was all over the house the oven didn't find so we had to by a new one

Any way we sold the said oven to a lady on gumtree dh did think she looked rough at the time but she has her child with her so no issues she gave us the money and that was that

My kitchen is now complete so I use some of this money only £180 of the £300 to my builder as payment along with money from the bank just got a call from t he builder the money is fake he went to settle up at the yard
He's done a lot of work for us before so I have no reason to not believe him

Oh says we should go to the police I only have a number of this person £350 down :( should we just take it as a loss

If the builder took it to bank then they won't have returned any fake money. In my experience, they keep it.

MyKingdomForBrie · 14/04/2016 10:47

The builder didn't take it to the bank - 'he went to settle up at the yard'

WellErrr · 14/04/2016 10:52

The builder is the one who is actually out of pocket. He needs to go to the police and report it. You will then get a visit from police and give them the details on how you obtained the fake money.

You paid in good faith and builder accepted it. So he's actually the one who has taken the hit.

Yep, his problem now.
The builder needs to take it to the police. The bank will confiscate and then hand to the police.

DreamingofItaly · 14/04/2016 11:53

I'm with upsi. It's be builder's problem now. He needs to report it. You paid in good faith. If you've got money left, check it over with one of this pens or take it to a friendly shop that has one and ask them to check it for you. If it's fake, you need to take it to the police with a full description of the woman and her children.

Sucks, but it's how it is.

TheDuchessOfArbroathsHat · 14/04/2016 11:56

So obviously you counted out the money when she handed it to you right? Of course you did. And you didn't notice that all that money was fake? Come on! Any fool can feel the difference between real and counterfeit money and even if you can't feel it you can see it - they're just not that good.

AdrenalineFudge · 14/04/2016 12:05

Would you like a Star TheDuchess Well done you, where next will you be espousing your pearls of wisdom?

Dawndonnaagain · 14/04/2016 12:11

Gosh Duchess, that's unnecessarily spiteful.
Oh, and ds, an ex bank manager says you're talking shite.

WellErrr · 14/04/2016 12:26

I've worked in banks Duchess, and the hardest time to spot good counterfeits is when there are a lot together.

One fake in a stack of reals you can feel just by touch usually, but all fakes together and you doubt yourself.

SpiritedLondon · 14/04/2016 13:34

Sounds like Duchess has a lot of experience handling fake notes.

Catvsworld · 14/04/2016 14:39

We no it's fake because we got money from the bank and were a bit short so took money from the Hoilday fund witch was the cash from the oven sale so we still had some left over we only paid £180 out of the 300 so dh checked the rest and after some googling they are fake
