Think majority of newborns shown are, well, really odd looking except to their parents, presumably). And That awful striving thing they do, like frogs. Just no.

Give me a calf or a lamb any day.

Maybe I'm pat bot archer Confused

Your name is very ironic, OP.

Leggytadpole · 12/04/2016 21:59

And That awful striving thing they do
What are they striving for? Perfection? Greatness? Success?

Wordsaremything · 12/04/2016 22:03

Striving in the old fashioned sense of stretching of limbs. I think queen Victoria said something similar. She had nine of them.

No baby look adorable when first born.

Their heads are squished and they look like big headed aliens

Yet their parents will think they are the most beautiful baby in the world

Wordsaremything · 12/04/2016 22:11

That's my point need . I can't see how anyone rationally would look at one of those and think - how gorgeous! How needy! I want one! Just shows the huge power of evolution, biology and hormones.

OP posts:
NeedACleverNN · 12/04/2016 22:12

Well of course it's all biology and hormones

Why do you think babies are born with big eyes?

It's been proved that we instinctively become maternal towards small creatures with big eyes. It's why we like pandas so much

CruCru · 12/04/2016 22:21

I thought that babies have big eyes because our eyeballs are the one that that doesn't grow.

NeedACleverNN · 12/04/2016 22:24

That too but a lot of research shows that big eyes = awwww

It's why we like things like aye ayes and slow loris

It's the eyes

Wordsaremything · 12/04/2016 22:25

And that idea is why popular' designer' (ugh) dogs tend to be bred with big eyes or cross bred that way.
Leading to all sorts of complications and health problems.

New born animals other than humans are more attractive generally. Think of a tiny baby elephant. They have small eyes but in my view so much more endearing than a human infant.

paddypants13 · 12/04/2016 22:55

I think you'll find OP that my babies were the exception to this rule and were/ are in fact the two most beautiful creatures ever to have existed! Grin

(But yes, most newborns are a bit squished and funny looking. To be fair though, no one would look their best after being kept in fluid for 9 months, dragged through a birth canal and then being thrust in to a new , bright and noisy world!)

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 12/04/2016 23:07

Big eyes? Never seen big eyes on a newborn. Besides, they mainly sleep!

TimeOfGlass · 12/04/2016 23:07

Babies tend to look much prettier after a day or two. It's hard to look your best on TV when you've just squeezed through the birth canal and are covered in vernix and amniotic fluid and blood.

I daresay a lamb, calf or elephant that's just a few minutes old looks a bit unattractive when compared to a slightly older one too.

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/04/2016 23:10

I get what you mean. Though after watching OBEM I was really surprised when my daughter was born and she wasn't covered in vernix and blood. She did have a little cone head because of the ventouse though.

MishMooshAndMogwai · 12/04/2016 23:13

Dd1 was a very pretty newborn, dd2 was not. Dd1 remains the prettier of the 2 however dd2 remains in the bald, alien head stage of life that my children seem to inhabit for the first 3.5 years of life.

I'd argue that newborn alpacas are far superior to calfs or lambs.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 12/04/2016 23:15

Well I don't normally watch it but I did tonight. Lovely little squidgy babies. Made me want to give birth again, loved that bit.
