To champion the return of the "housecoat"?

My Grandma and Auntie B.both removed their coats when getting home and then put on their housecoat - a bit like Mrs Overall. I swore I would never wear such a thing but...

So practical and has pockets to pick up bits and pieces and, also, keeps my shoulders warm. I picked up mine from a charity shop.

I am single and I don't think this is related.Smile

Ooh I just thought, maybe the pound shop?

LovelyFriend · 09/04/2016 20:12

You all need to get a grip!!
And quick.

The only thing mildly acceptable on this thread is the Japanese apron thing.

You need to stop this now.

(you'll thank me later for this intervention)
:)

I have my old school uniform overall (think long sleeves with elasticated cuffs, high neck but wide enough so no buttons, knee length dropping from the yoke) which I use for messy jobs. It was bought to last and it certainly has...

Shallishanti · 09/04/2016 20:16

I quite like those tasteful japanese linen things, but I would need sleeves
these school overall things sound good

Shallishanti · 09/04/2016 20:21

this is made of cotton

diddl · 09/04/2016 20:27

It's all a bit 1950s, isn't it?

Doing housework in smart clothes that need covering up to keep them looking nice for when the man of the house gets home?

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 09/04/2016 20:31

Sadik, you've just reminded me - when I was in nursery in about 1973, we wore little housecoat type cover ups (I never got over the fact that I got yellow instead of pink) and they were brilliant! I want one now ...

ExpandingRoundTheMiddle · 09/04/2016 20:32

That's the first time I've seen that reason mentioned on the thread diddl. I like them because I have a clumsy/idle combo going on. I've ruined far too many clothes because I cba to put cleaning scruffers on and then change out of them again later. Smile

cakeycakeface · 09/04/2016 20:37

I'd say that the classic domestic workers uniform in Southern Africa looks like a house coat (and functions like one!)

MaryZ

Hats indoors you say?
I thought only Zinglette and MiniZing did that. But I don't think it's the same style over all, they are normally butt naked with a hint of felt tip pen on their arms & legs Grin

ILikeUranus · 09/04/2016 20:42

I don't get it, at aaaaaaaaaaaaaall! It's exactly like a dressing gown, but not as comfy and cosy! Stop dicking about ffs and get yersel a dressing gown.

Woodhill · 09/04/2016 20:47

I sometimes wear a bibbed apron with pockets. I remember dh nanny wearing one and my Dm had a blue striped one I vaguely remember when I was little.

Hair in rollers in a scarf anyone to go with it?

Molio · 09/04/2016 20:48

I've got my grandmother's one from the '60's, still in perfect condition: pale mauve with big cream spots and incredibly pretty, not at all like that school thing which is grim.

lorelei9here · 09/04/2016 20:50

Diddl "Doing housework in smart clothes that need covering up to keep them looking nice for when the man of the house gets home?"

Well, I'm single, OP is single...so no, not for us. But I do work at home a lot, I do tend to split cleaning tasks so I don't have a dull full day and maybe I clean a lot, not sure but in a small flat, working from here, cooking from scratch etc...

I do like the idea of just flinging something on over gym gear or jeans so I can not think "what am I wearing" before bleaching the loo and getting a lovely white mark on my drifit leggings or cooking tomatoes up for sauce and getting blobs on a nice t shirt.

Maybe I'm just clumsy.

lorelei9here · 09/04/2016 20:51

Uranus, dressing gowns are for relaxing.

MrsSchadenfreude · 09/04/2016 21:10

Sadik - I used to have a "babi"! My mother used to stock up in Spain on holiday every year. The DDs had something very similar when we lived in Belgium.

springydaffs · 09/04/2016 21:23

Uranus - it's an apron with sleeves. And a back.

Makes perfect sense to me!

vienna1981 · 09/04/2016 21:27

Just need a muriel on the front parlour wall now...

GarlicShake · 09/04/2016 21:28

I'm also single! And clumsy! I live in filth, so on the rare occasions I do clean it involves strong chemicals. I cook a lot - and spatter stuff all over myself. My mini kitchen boasts a mini sink, leading to much sloshing & spillage.

As lorelei says, it's the 1950s idea of protecting your clothes very simply. Not the bow in the hair & silent children Grin

PersisFord · 09/04/2016 21:39

I must have one of these for giving the kids their meals. Everything I have been wearing needs washing every night because it has nasty little yoghurty hand prints on it. At the moment I wear one of DH's thousands of hoodies and rotate it weekly but something longer to cover me down to about my knees, and in quick dry polyester rather than huge and heavy cotton would be much better. The green school one is the best so far but I would really like longer I think....

AdoraBell · 09/04/2016 21:44

Having recently moved back from abroad I am constantly cold regardless of the weather and central heating so I now wear my fluffy dressing gown around the house.

I give no one flying fuck what anyone thinks of this Grin

PookyHook · 09/04/2016 21:44

I would love a house coat. I used to have this terrible habit of wearing dressing gowns over my clothes in the house all the time and I felt really sloppy any time I opened the door. I tried to give up wearing them several times but kept going back to them because I'm always freezing. Eventually I threw them out and went cold turkey. I wear an apron now instead, which is fine for spring and summer, but I'll need something warmer for winter.

The problem for me is the feeling of the cold flooding in as I take my coat off, I love to be able to put something on immediately to replace the warmth of the coat. I'll probably buy a big chunky knitted cardigan for wearing around the house in winter.

I'd love a nice apron with sleeves, or a pretty housecoat with a more modern cut and pattern.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 09/04/2016 21:58

Maryz, high-fives fellow indoor hat-wearer, I have a cashmere beanie that very rarely leaves my head, I think people have started to wonder if I actually have hair.

Regarding housecoats, my Great-Grandma's housekeeper Minna always wore a lab-coat style one in black nylon, sleeves rolled up, arms like hams, permanent headscarf.

I do quite fancy one though, I tend to throw my dressing gown on over my clothes at home, it's a plaid one from Toast, capacious pockets, good cover-up, the sleeves are flappy and annoying though.

Think I could buy into this house-coat malarkey. Natural fabrics only though. I'm a bit of a sweater.
