To give my babies ready made baby food sometimes?

I'm surrounded by friends and family giving me cats bum faces over giving my 7 month old twins pouches and jars of baby food. I'm avoiding ones with sugar. Im making my own purées too, but sometimes life is just too busy. I'm not unreasonable am I? One baby has a dairy allergy, the other refuses pretty much everything and particularly homemade puree, I have a three year old as well, and a husband who works away during the week.

You'd think I was giving them gin by the looks on some peoples faces......

It's all the same, if youre buying the good ones,w hich they almost all are these days.

What do people think is the difference between the pouch of pureed fruit and the bowl of pureed fruit you mushed yourself? There is NO difference at all!

coconutpie · 07/04/2016 13:19

Why are you giving purées to a 7 month old? They should be on finger food by then.

Because she wants to and its her baby. There is no should about it.

Why do people think its for them to comment on what other people feed their children?

honkinghaddock · 07/04/2016 13:26

Some 7 month olds won't eat finger food. Mine (who I know was extreme) didn't touch it till 18 months.
I did about 80% homemade 20% jars.

Feelingworriednow · 07/04/2016 13:31

Actually all baby food is good nowadays . The proportions of protein, carbs, fats etc allowed is set down in legislation! This is why the actual amount of chicken, for example, in say a chicken recipe jar, seems very low. The manufacturers aren't allowed to make move away from the specified proportions. Likewise the whole organic baby food is a complete waste of time as the very sensitive machines that identify the levels of "non organic" compounds in foods aren't sensitive enough to identify the max levels allowed in the non-organic foods. In fact organic baby food is lower in iron than non-organic as you can't add it and it be "organic". Used to work for one of the big baby food companies back in the day!
Pouches and jars aren't better but certainly no worse. You do what works for you!

Fondantfancy66 · 07/04/2016 13:33

Thanks for all your comments. I knew I wasn't being unreasonable, but sometimes when you have a bad day you need a bit of reassurance. I might turn to the Ella's pouches for my dinner when things get really hectic!

In response to the comment about why they're on purees and not finger foods, I never actually said that they weren't having finger foods. They suck on a bit of cucumber or toast but don't take much in. As premature babies, I've noticed that in most things they're slightly behind where my older child was, and I judge that, at the moment, they need purees.

Both my dc were eating pureed food at 7 months...it's hardly unusual!

My pfb only ate home made food...once I had my second baby and was juggling a newborn and a toddler, I used jars a lot more!

scandichick · 07/04/2016 13:37

Eh, you've got a three year old and twins - whatever gets you through the day would be fine in my book. And well done, it sounds like you're doing great if that's the only thing people can find to complain about.

LaurieMarlow · 07/04/2016 13:37

If your mum would like to supply their food then she should get a jog on with it. In the meantime, you do what works for you.

formerbabe · 07/04/2016 13:37

My dd wasn't premature but she was always at the lower end of the weight charts so I preferred to spoon-feed her pureed food as well as giving her finger food too.

BillSykesDog · 07/04/2016 13:38

Oh God no, YANBU. Although I did used to 'taste test' the jars myself. Heinz & C&G were muck, but Ella's and Hipp were rather nice. And with twins you're so rushed off your feet if you can spend time more productively than spooning mush into freezer bags then why not?

MintyBojingles · 07/04/2016 13:41

YANBU- I'm all for doing whatever makes life easier with little ones!

UmbongoUnchained · 07/04/2016 13:43

My friend has just had her second baby and has decided pouches are the way forward!
I did have a read of one of the Ella's kitchen ones and it had quite a lot of sugar in it though, is that normal or was it just the specific pouch?

andadietcoke · 07/04/2016 13:47

Would you like me to send you the amazing spoons that screw straight on to the pouches? I'm sure that would make their cat bum faces stick like that. Seriously, all the short cuts are fine with twins. Mine were entirely raised on EK pouches and finger food. They're 2.5 now and not at all damaged by the experience.

Ivegotyourgoat · 07/04/2016 13:47

Yanbu, I hate food snobbery, there are people in other parts of the world that haven't even got access to clean water, jars of baby food are brilliant in comparison.

The only downside is they are a bit bland and similar texture. Ds1 had about 50% jars whereas ds2 hasn't really had any. I've found ds2 is much more able to manage family food and doesn't gag/can feed himself and seems more open to trying things. Could be just their personalities.

whatevva · 07/04/2016 13:54

I had this the other way round - my twins ate absolutely everything (including my dinner) and I made loads of home made stuff and the 3 yr old was on breadcrumbed anything I could get in him.

When I found I was expecting twins, I thought they would be like two of the 3 year old. But no! It is a pleasure to make baby food for babies who like it. There is nothing worse than slaving over a hot food processor for it all to be spat out and screamed at.

With twins and a toddler, compromises have to be made and you know best where that should be done.

BicycleGasoline · 07/04/2016 13:54

My DD was BLW'd, everything was home made etc.
Then I had twins when she was 20m. By the time they were weaning she was in full on toddler food refusal. They were weaned almost entirely on jars. If I did make puree they wouldn't eat it. I bought Hipp or Ella's pouches as at least they were organic etc.
Now at 2.5 and 4.5 they all have their phases of eating and not eating, I try to ignore as much as possible. But none of it is down to how they were weaned.

Be kind to yourself, and do whatever's needed to get through!

whatevva · 07/04/2016 13:56

( I was in trouble for using disposable nappies and not changing their bums on my knee in the proper traditional manner Hmm )

waitingforsomething · 07/04/2016 14:02

With my first baby I spent hours of my life in the kitchen sweating it over Annabel Karmel recipes. She's a happy healthy girl.
With baby 2 I just couldn't face it so he has eaten a lot of pouches as well as mashed up whatever we are eating. He is a happy healthy boy and I was less stressed.
It doesn't matter , it really doesn't. I think if you've got twins and a 3 year old you most definitely should be usingn them!

MartinaJ · 07/04/2016 14:14

My Mum told me we need to let our daughter cry it out because she'll be spoiled otherwise. DD won.

LaurieMarlow · 07/04/2016 14:21

If I had twin babies and a 3 year old I'd probably be getting by by firing wotsits at them. Sounds like you're doing fabulously.

BillBrysonsBeard · 07/04/2016 14:27

I don't get the issue, Ella's is all natural ingredients! My only slight issue is the price for what amounts to a few slurps Grin but if I mushed up strawberries and apples myself it would cost even more. Does she realise they are all natural?

wannadancethenightaway · 07/04/2016 14:45

My mil is like this and I always remind her that she didn't work from when she had her oldest until my DH (the youngest) was 7...so a total of 12 years. I was back working FT when my DC was 10 months. She always shuts up then

Sukistjames · 07/04/2016 14:45

Nobody's damn business how as long as they are getting fed.

wannadancethenightaway · 07/04/2016 14:45

I should point out that the reason I make this point is because I have very little time and sometimes
Pouches or jars have to be used.
