To not want a tumble drier. Total first world problem.

We've recently moved into a new house, garden is big with one of those long, extendable washing lines. DP (who doesn't do the laundry) wants to get a 2nd hand tumble drier despite us living in the south of the UK and getting plenty of sun. I think it's a waste of money!

I don't have a tumble and manage just fine. My garden gets the tiniest amount of sun too, but I still get a load done near enough every day. I either hang on the airer next to the radiator or when it's warm I'll hang outside and they are usually dry by late afternoon. I would like a tumble dryer though but don't have anywhere to put one! It would just be nice for towels etc.

HungryHorace · 07/04/2016 15:40

We bought a tumble dryer the autumn we first had 2 kids (with a 13 month age gap) as we were living in a flat with no adequate outdoor drying space.

We are now in a house and I prefer to hang washing outside (and do so all year round), but it's great for a) finishing bits off that have mostly dried outside and b) drying washing on days when it's pouring down so we can keep on top of the washing.

Anything that can't be tumbled goes on an airer next to the dryer to benefit from the warmth it gives out in the utility room.

I'm really glad we got it as it is very helpful, and I don't think it's hugely dear to run (though if we've done 15 loads from start to finish over this winter I'd be surprised, as it's been a windy one!).

howmanyairmiles · 07/04/2016 15:41

My time is too valuable to be faffing around with washing lines, I do have solar panels which helps offset the minimal cost.

Thinking back perhaps I was scarred for life seeing the neighbours massive knickers and sanitary towels on her line.

I gave up on my green credentials years ago as I would never make a dent into my carbon footprint.

cozietoesie · 07/04/2016 15:49

Of course you could make a dent. It's just a matter of how much isn't it?

Never had a tumble dryer. Despite the offer of two second hand ones being offered. Dc are a bit older now so don't go thru clothes. I love getting the clothes out on the line.

No I couldn't, I took 162 flights last year. This year isn't looking any better, I am in 4 countries next week.

minipie · 07/04/2016 16:08

We have the ultimate first world solution - we have a tumble dryer but never use it.

We don't hang washing outside either.

All washing is hung up inside. No condensation because we have draughty windows. Dries quickly in winter when heating is on and slowly (but still quick enough) in summer.

And we mostly don't iron, apart from work shirts (we just live with the creases)

BeALert · 07/04/2016 16:51

I live in the middle of a very cold snowy forest and no longer feel the slightest guilt about using my tumble dryer.

My rotary washing line was brought down by an ice storm a couple of years ago. I've replaced it with a nice shrub :-)

You're actually beating my husband - he only took 140 last year...

Voteforpedr0 · 07/04/2016 17:05

Bealert, Im envious of you at the sound of ' living in the middle of a snowy forest ' that sounds awesome, always fancied living in surroundings like that.

DiscoGlitter · 07/04/2016 17:14

I'd absolutely love a tumble drier, ours has decided to die and can't afford to replace it. Sad
How the hell do you dry your clothes without one? For the past few months we've had to have the heating on constantly to get stuff dry as the weather has been so, SO shit and will, not stop bastarding raining.
Sorry for the swears but it's getting me down!

cozietoesie · 07/04/2016 17:31

Ironing is a deep perversion, mini. I'm convinced of that.

cozietoesie · 07/04/2016 17:33

162 flights? Your choice to make them all I reckon. Could you try for even one less?

PageStillNotFound404 · 07/04/2016 17:38

cozietoesie did you consider the flights might be business-related and howmamyairmiles may have very little choice?

howmanyairmiles · 07/04/2016 18:04

Cozietosie, 404 was correct, the 162 flights were all business related, I go where my clients need me to be and I wouldn't change my job for anything.

I have a washer dryer due to lack of space and I barely use it, because it's shit, takes ages to dry anything, shrinks things and seems somehow to throw out even more dust - god only knows how since there's no outlet. Towels only generally (sometimes bedding and/or an emergency piece of clothing). And even for towels it's usually just for a last blast for softness generally as they don't seem to be as soft dried on the airer. I don't have an outside line, so it's an airer and radiators here.

But since I seem to feel the cold constantly, the heating is on far more often that most people.

Don't seem to have any damp issues here though.

NickyEds · 07/04/2016 19:43

You love hoovering?! I've always liked your posts MrsDeVere but there's no need for that kind of talk! I've got a 2 year old who finds and then drops all kinds of crap and an 8 month old who picks it all up and eats it, so hoovering has become a total pita. If I didn't have to hoover every sodding day I might have time to hang the washing out Smile

ghostyslovesheep · 07/04/2016 19:45

I like Ironing - there I said it - sorry I am ashamed and all that but I do

I also have a tumble drier

You really think people do that many flights per year out of choice?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 07/04/2016 22:07

I'm not a great housekeeper, but I too like a bit of hoovering. It is very zen and is the modern equivalent of sweeping in Buddhism.

cozietoesie · 07/04/2016 22:37

...You really think people do that many flights per year out of choice?...

Some jobs do involve considerable air travel. I had one myself (together with colleagues) and I would judge that about a third of the trips undertaken were not strictly essential but undertaken through eg either habit or client expectation.

If howmany judges, though, that every single one of those air trips were critical, then who am I to gainsay her? Smile

cozietoesie · 07/04/2016 22:40

I just gloat over the fluff that's been collected, bibbity. I'm not sure if that's zen but it's certainly pleasing. Smile
