AIBU to be utterly panic stricken over DD lack of teeth! Dentist related

I'll keep it simple and short but desperately hoping someone has had an experience of this!

Just took 8 year old DD to a routine dentist appointment. They did an X-ray as she has only lost 2 baby teeth (front top) and these have been replaced by adult teeth. The X-ray basically showed...she has no fucking teeth!!! Once her baby ones fall out then there are none there to replace them! I lie, she has 3 random teeth waiting in the wings! I'm not exaggerating, I'm devastated! (I know this word is unpopular around these parts but keep imagine my beautiful daughter as a teenager with no bastard teeth!)

Has anyone experienced this? What treatments are available? Will she have to wait until 18? How long can baby teeth last? Any help or advice will be much appreciated especially as our hospital referral though urgent may take several months apparently!

Do encourage gently corrective comes tic work. Both me and my friend have missing adult teeth, he has lovely implants and I have messy oddly shaped teeth that aren't wearing well because instead if talking me through fears mum let me choose.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/04/2016 11:49

Was it a mouth-only X ray? When I was under orthodontic care aged 12-17 I had whole head X rays so they could see the position of the teeth much more clearly. Perhaps if a whole head X ray was done it would show more teeth really high up. Disclaimer: I don't know if they still do those! I had 3 or 4 over the years - would have been between about 1995 and 2000.

LifeCrossRoad · 05/04/2016 11:54

DH has quite a few baby teeth left. They don't make any signs of coming out as there are no adult teeth to push them out. They're more unstable, so things like mouth guards etc are a must for contact sports, but that's just sensible anyway.

ootsideinbacktaefront · 05/04/2016 11:57

She won't get implants until she's older but she does fit the (very strict) criteria for free implants at a dental hospital.

MrsTatum1980 · 05/04/2016 11:57

It was just an X-ray on her teeth so I'm hoping and praying ( don't care how woo Wink and those stories have given me hope!) that there could be some high up hiding! The only thing that makes me think that isn't a possibility is she does have her two front teeth through! So thankful that if she only got two teeth it was those.

I've called the dentist. The receptionist is going to speak to her and then let me know but I think the best option is going to be a private consultation. I'll ask the dentist for some advice and who and how.

I've got to stop imagining worst case scenario but it's so difficult when it's so unpredictable. She may not lose her baby teeth anytime soon, she may not need work on her jaw to create room etc but in my head I'm imagining painful surgery and no bloody teeth. Poor thing.

There was a lady on Women's Hour a few weeks back with the same condition. Iirc, she was mid-twenties and still had all her baby teeth but was worried about what would happen if/when any fell out. If there are no adult teeth pushing through, the baby teeth shouldn't fall out routinely. I hope you manage to get some reassurance

Elle80 · 05/04/2016 13:07

This is horrible for you, but I echo what others have said that the baby teeth will stay in place until the adult tooth pushes it through. I went to school with a girl that had several baby teeth into adulthood.

I would also pay for a private consultation.

Best of luck to all of you

Dneice (18) was told 2 years ago that Xrays showed that she had no wisdom teeth. As her gran never got any we assumed that this was hereditary. Last week she was xrayed again and lo and behold 4 wisdom teeth have appeared under the gum line. I'd get a second opinion (and some answers) if I were you.

MrsTatum1980 · 05/04/2016 13:23

Thank you all. I've managed to calm myself down a bit as I have spoken to the dentist. She has reassured me that due to the rarity of the condition DD won't have a long wait (she thinks they'll actively want to see her!) and I'll keep everything crossed that more thorough X-rays miraculously show teeth hiding everywhere!

She also said that there wouldn't be delays/waits with stop gap measures. So if her two bottom middle teeth fell out suddenly when she was 13 they'd be able to get her an emergency appt and create a stop gap treatment such as a bridge, denture etc and then implants when her mouth was fully formed.

She's going to call the consultant and get back to me with news of an approx waiting time for an appt and then I'll take it from there and consider private. Though she said she wouldn't bother as due to DD's age there were so many variables and what ifs. I feel so much better than I did so thank you all for positive stories and I'm not even thinking about her little brother as apparently it is likely to be genetic! At least I gave her a full set of baby teeth Sad

Ds1 has this. Your dentist needs to refer you to the hospital . We found out when ds was 7. He has ten adult teeth. He's going to have a brace for a floating bridge on the missing bottom two front teeth. Braces to pull the two canines next to the two top teeth. He only has four molars, which are the smallest ones. I looked online and baby teeth in this situation won't fall out. She should have the whole mouth X-ray, so they will beable to tell what the roots are like on her baby teeth. Ds will be having dental implants. They don't fit them before the age of 18 and I was told the nhs don't pay for them. Probably have to get a loan...
It's abit of a shock isn't it, but there's lots they can do.

spanky2 · 05/04/2016 13:26

Ds2 seems to have a full set but he's only 8. I have a missing tooth, so he must have got it from me. Glad you're feeling better.

MrsTatum1980 · 05/04/2016 13:32

We look to have 5 adult teeth in total Spanky. The two middle front and then 3 waiting to come though at the bottom. It's strangely reassuring that someone else has gone through it. How has he coped with it? Has it bothered him?

I'm hoping it'll be funded on the NHS as the dentist did say implants were covered in situations such as this but who knows what will have changed by the time DD is 18! It's probably more worrying as its so unpredictable. Thank you for your experience.

InternationalHouseofToast · 05/04/2016 13:35

Mrs Tatum, the kind of upside to this is if your DD needs implants, bridges etc. she can get them done as a teenager, when she doesn't have to pay for them. It would be cripplingly expensive to get sorted out if she needed to get crowns etc as an adult, even on the NHS, if it's done by the dentist and not the hospital.

MrsTatum1980 · 05/04/2016 13:37

Thanks Toast. I've cheered her up by showing her Rylan's teeth! She's quite happy she's possibly going to have some cracking teeth once she's older. Grin I'll worry for the both is us and she can dream of pure white gnashers!

Our DS did get any teeth until he was 30 months! We were panicking !!!
Hopefully it will sort itself out and you'll get the treatment she requires Tate.

spanky2 · 06/04/2016 09:40

He's not that bothered as I've told him about dental implants. I read online that some studies suggest that less teeth are a evolutionary development, he likes the idea he's more evolved! That's good news about the dental implants. Tbh we can't really afford them.

DartmoorDoughnut · 06/04/2016 09:42

Not massively helpful I know but our chimney sweep - in his late 50s - has all his baby teeth still

Glitteryfrog · 06/04/2016 09:50

I'm another without a full set of adult teeth in my 30s
I've still got one baby tooth and a tiny gap where one should have been but it got pushed out of alignment by my adult teeth and was removed.
Baby teeth don't fall out they're pushed out by the adult teeth.
It makes sense that a whole head xray would be needed to make sure they're not higher up and might just appear a bit later.

origamiwarrior · 06/04/2016 09:51

I have two baby teeth (upper canines) and I'm 40. Inherited it from my mum. My adult teeth are there, but effectively lying side ways so will never come through. The downside of that means I would be unable to have implants as they would be drilling into my adult teeth. My baby teeth have been capped so they look to be the same size as normal teeth. They are vulnerable though, and have a wobble. Apparently there is no root, they are just held in place by the gum.

fufulina · 06/04/2016 09:54

There was a woman's hour episode all about teeth recently and there was a girl with this - they had a dentist there talking about it. Might be worth a listen - I'm sorry I can't remember all the details.

alleypalley · 06/04/2016 09:57

My dd has this but less extreme, she has 5 adult teeth missing. It's called hypotonia, if you can afford it go private as it takes ages to get an appointment, my dd was referred in October and only has her appointment next week. As we've not had the appointment yet I don't know what the treatment will be. One of her baby teeth in her bottom jaw has sunk back down into her gum and I suspect will need to be removed with surgery.

Alexa444 · 06/04/2016 10:14

I just wanted to add in here that she is only young and perhaps they just haven't appeared in the gums yet. I have extra teeth. Some grew behind my front bottom teeth, which were removed and another through the roof of my mouth next to a top molar which I still have as it doesn't affect my speaking. These appeared randomly throughout my childhood and teens and there was never any sign of them on previous XRays, they just appeared. So perhaps your daughter's will do the same. They could just be high up, obscured by the jaw.

MrsTatum1980 · 06/04/2016 11:00

Thank you for all these replies. I'm feeling much more positive today as I've accepted what will be, will be. I'm holding out hope that she's only 8 and there may still be time for these adult teeth to mysteriously appear. It's also really positive that her baby teeth are more likely to remain.

I think I was so upset at the thought of her in her teens with huge gaps and terrible teeth and it affecting her confidence. (Plus possibly painful treatments) However, there are far worse things that it could be and we should be grateful that it is treatable albeit until her teeth fall out/ we get an appt/ a head X-ray, we don't know what that will be! DD thinks it's very cool now that it's so rare to be missing almost all her adult teeth. She is hoping for a full shiny set that she doesn't have to clean. Thank your for the reassurance and God help me next time I have a dream about my teeth falling out, it could tip me over the edge Wink

I am turning 40 next year and still have 2 baby teeth.

My childhood dentist terrified me about gaps but since then other adults and dentist have talked about either implants or as the gaps in my case are small bridges when the do finally go.

I was told they wouldn't last my 20's.

It's a gene that didn't affect my parents but was apparently known my Mum's family.

I would talk again to the dentist or another and see what they say about the future.

Gryla · 06/04/2016 11:09

I'm not even thinking about her little brother as apparently

My siblings weren't affected by and it didn't turn up in my parents either - it was uncles and mums's cousins.
