out of hours doctor and sore throat

Had horrendous sore throat since Wednesday afternoon . It's now Sunday and I'm nearly in tears . I'm taking ibuprofen , paracetamol , throat spray . It's day 5 now and no let up .
I'm not really one to go to the doctors .
Everything I've read online says it'll clear in a week .
Would this warrant to you seeing an out of hours doctor or should I wait until tomorrow and try and be seen by my normal doctor .
Feeling really sorry for myself :-(

If you ring 111, they'll assess your symptoms on the phone, and then will refer you (on the phone) to a clinical adviser if they think you need it. Then the CA will decide if you need to see a GP. It's not wasting their time, it's what they're there for!

When I had bacterial tonsillitis I felt like I had flu - my whole body ached.

Bedsheets4knickers · 03/04/2016 12:30

I've come home with s mouth spray called Difflam. It's got a really long nozzle that actual gets to the back of the throat . Il give it ago until morning then see doctors if I wake up the same . So far it's completely took the pain away x

It's good stuff. :) Hope you feel better soon.

I've just finished a 10 day course of antibiotics for exactly the same thing. It felt like I was being stabbed in the throat every time I swallowed, the worst sore throat I have ever had. That difflum spray made no difference, para/ibu overlapping made no difference, Soluble aspirin made no difference

By day 10 I couldn't stand it anymore and got a same day appointment at GP. She didn't think it was tonsillitis as my tonsils were not swollen and no white spots, no temp etc etc but she swabbed my throat anyway and when the results came back (day 14 by this point) there was bacteria, hence the antibiotics.

So please keep an eye on it. So glad the spray is working for you, my GP did say that people swear by this spray.

(That was quite cathartic btw, I don't think I've ever felt such pain!)

Ohfourfoxache · 04/04/2016 00:09

Think dh and I have this too - mine started last Saturday, DH the following day so we're both just over a week in.

Not been to the GP (assuming that it's viral so no point), it is affecting my asthma but I'm ok just on regular meds and it's manageable.

Anyone have any idea how long we can expect it to last? Ds has had conjunctivitis (very very much better) and a few snuffles at the beginning of the week but he seems absolutely fine now Confused

RubbleBubble00 · 04/04/2016 00:19

I suffer badly with strep throat. Alternate co-codamol (ask doc for script for stonger ones in soluable if pain is unbearable) and ibuprofen. Honey and lemon fresh in warm water. Gargle salt water - temporary but good for knocking water after to keep hydrated.

IwillrunIwillfly · 04/04/2016 00:23

If there's pus (white spots or coating) on your tonsils then it's most likely bacterial and will need antibiotics. Hope the difflams helping in the meantime!

GreenMarkerPen · 04/04/2016 00:28

then it's most likely bacterial and will need antibiotics

no you don't. unless you get really ill (fever, vomiting, breathin problems).

most infections, bacterial or viral, are self limiting (they go away on their own).

Maverick66 · 04/04/2016 00:36

I have had this all over Easter.
Nothing took pain in my throat away I was taking co coda mol and ibuprofen.
It started in my throat first 3 days with temperature. It then moved to a tickle persistent cough and chest infection.
I didn't get antibiotics . I put it down to flu.
It completely knocked me off my feet for last 10 days.
Energy levels back to normal today. Throat still scratchy and ears a bit sore.

jellybeans · 04/04/2016 01:26

I went OOH because I had it for a week and then it cleared but came back even worse. I was in agony for 3 days. Never known a sore throat like it, just horrific. One side of my neck was massively swollen and I had a temp and white spots in the throat. I got antibs, anti inflammatory spray and hospital strength co codamol. The pain was hideous. I rang 111 who sent me to OOH to.exclude quinsy (it was one sided). I would call 111. Hope you feel better soon.

jellybeans · 04/04/2016 01:29

Difflam and even hosp strength co codamol didn't touch the pain from mine. It was hideous. I never knew swollen glands could hurt so much either.

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 04/04/2016 01:38

I still have some of that spray from the last throat infection I had, never known pain like it.

Storminateapot · 04/04/2016 01:38

You don't need antibiotics for a bacterial sore throat if you are an otherwise healthy adult. Your immune system will clear it - maybe not as quickly as antibiotics would, maybe a day of so more, but I think it's important that we all try really hard not to assume minor ailments 'need' antibiotics. They really don't.

It's a big problem - we're storing up a potential disaster for our children here with resistance. Be sensible.

kali110 · 04/04/2016 02:31

I've had this over a week ago aling with my dh. Sore throat, temp, then came coughing. Dh ended up at a&e as it turned into a setious chest infection and i ended up with an emergency doc app for same thing!
You have my sympathies as it really is vile.
It's been over a week and it still hasn't gone for me.
If you do hold on you can have cocodamol instead of paracetamol
On it's own along with ibrophen.

kali110 · 04/04/2016 02:36

storm i understand the overuse of anyibiotics ( reason why i can no longer simply order antibiotics whenever i have a chest infection rather than havibg to waste a doc app) but not all healthy adults do just get rid if it.
I had to have my tonsils out as an adult as i was getting tonsillitis every few months.
I even ended up in a&e with it as it caused high temperatures and migraines.
I was also having huge abscenses from work because of it and that was when i was on antibiotics. If i'd not taken any i'd have probably lost my job.

Sothisishowitfeels · 04/04/2016 03:52

I had tonsilitis in Feb. I ended up in hospital having iv antibiotics! . I had no idea a sore throat could make you so ill!

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 04/04/2016 04:57

I had this last week, pus lasted 6 days, pain for another 3 days after. I didn't go to the gp because antibiotics only shorten the span by about 24 hours on average and the effects of antibiotics are horrible. I don't know if that was the right choice as it was so painful!

Bedsheets4knickers · 04/04/2016 10:04

Well day 6 . Managed to sleep until 5am without needing to top up pain relief so that's an improvement . Today it feels more on one side rather then both . Def recommend the Difflam it's been great . So many people I've spoken to have got it . Must be something going round x

Day 10 here, sore throat is pretty much unchanged and one ear is completely blocked still. Breathing is better than it was but the cough is still here. Woke up this morning with a gunky eye and so just hoping it's not conjunctivitis Sad

DH day 9, says that if he had to go out/do stuff today then he'd feel able to but he's still coughing and his throat is bad.

I may have to take it easy for the next couple of days - going back to work after maternity leave on Wednesday Sad

kali110 · 06/04/2016 10:53

out* you have my sympathy!it is vile. I suffered horrendously for 5 days before my app. If you need to see a doc i would. Mine Started getting better after 3 days on anti biotics ( unfortunately as i left it too long it has fucked up my chest do a week on i am still suffering with that now) but the main virus is gone. My mother has got it, she has had it 11 days and is feeling worse.
