To want to throw the useless thing out of the window?

Said thing being the printer. It's a wireless one and will it connect? Will it hell.

After half an hour of turning it on and off and trying just about every way I can think of to try and connect it, the little fucking error light is still blinking away. This happens every single time we need to use it, until eventually by some miracle, it connects! And works once. The next time we need it, we go through the whole rigmarole again. Angry Angry

So would I BU to just admit defeat and chuck the bloody thing out, and ask you all to recommend a printer that might actually work?

(Disclaimer: Of course I'm not actually going to throw it out of the window but I've had enough and needed a little vent!)

We have an HP one which has a very rude name its known as.

I am sure it is aware of the urgency of the print job and will always pick that time to randomly print blank pages - makes all the right noises but nothing comes out!

I use a lot of online postage - it won't print from the firefox pdf viewer but will from Acrobat!

You always have to go and speak nicely to it before printing anything!!

BarbaraofSeville · 01/04/2016 17:03

Just to add another brand into the mix, I have a Samsung one that is the same. it used to work on the old Windows 7 laptop but won't work with the new Windows 10 one so I have resorted to a cable. They are next to each other anyway but it is sooo annoying.

Damn thing won't talk to my work laptop by any method, despite IT insisting it is set up correctly. So if I am working at home and want to print something, I have to copy it onto a USB stick and use home laptop, or email it to my personal email address. Grrr.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/04/2016 17:04

Agree that it knows the urgency of the print job before deciding to work - boarding passes half an hour before you are due to leave for the airport, will not print. Pointless shit to show MIL next week - will print any time you like.

wasonthelist · 01/04/2016 17:11

I have a Epson one that works (wireless), but I had to disable the energy saving mode where it went to sleep after a while, because once sleeping it refused to wake up and print stuff. Ever.

emmaluvseeyore · 01/04/2016 17:23

I wonder if that's what happens with mine wasonthe. It's so infuriating!

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 01/04/2016 17:28

We have an HP 4500 all in one thingy, which is pretty good apart from refusing to recognise cheap ink (as I'm not going to pay HP prices - hah!). When I replace a cartridge, it asks me 45 times if I KNOW that it's not HP ink and tries to connect me to their online store - no thanks!

kvilebu · 01/04/2016 18:19

I used to have a HP. It was the biggest pile of crap ever. In fact, I have had several printers and they were all the same.
I don't know why they are so useless - the software is maybe badly written or something. I have no idea.
I was driven mad when wanting to print on or two things out and then something would go wrong and I would end up having to faff on restarting the computer and messing about for at least half an hour.
A year ago, my printer died (er... actually it got killed, by a PMS foot kicking the living shit out of it). I bought a Samsung laser printer with wireless. It has crashed precisely once in the entire year. It is a dream.

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 01/04/2016 19:14

Mines HP. I can print direct from my phone or laptop (older windows - I won't let it update to windows shitty 10 no matter how much the bastards nag me).

The only time I had problems I was using the 3G connection on my phone as my wireless (the printer really didn't like that). Its fine when using normal home broad band as the wireless source.

If all else fails get a cable and just cuss the thing for not working wirelessly.

I've seen that video of the cat and the printer about a million times, but it still makes me laugh!

Roseberrry · 01/04/2016 20:11

Definitely smash it, you'll feel much better and have a good excuse to buy a new one.

it knows the urgency of the print job before deciding to work ...true of every printer I've ever owned!

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 01/04/2016 21:31

MirriVan

That link reminded me of that evil Kodak printer I had. You'd have all new ink. Print one page from a black and white document, then suddenly it would decide you needed to replace the yellow ink cartridge and that it couldn't possibly print anymore black and white pages until you did. It was constant. Always a different colour but always one of them needed replacing so that you could print black text. It seriously pissed me off.

I threw it in a skip. Felt much better.

LadyBaelish · 01/04/2016 21:43

Well, DH managed to get it working! And then half an hour later we had a knock from our neighbour who had just got home, at some point in my printer-induced rage I'd managed to connect to HIS printer which was more than happy to print the pages for me Blush

YANBU at all. Printers are cunts.

Our canon was fine until we dared to get a new router, thankfully it came with a cable so we do it like that now

kvilebu · 01/04/2016 21:56

Finally That's exactly why I ended up switching to black and white. It drove me insane - permanently having to buy colour cartridges when I didn't really need colour, they cost a fortune. If they weren't used all the time they dried up.
It was a nightmare trying to get cheaper cartridges to work in the printer - they would work eventually but only after 1000 dialogue boxes refusing to accept them.
