Eating in other People's Houses

Whilst chatting about weekend plans at work today I have mentioned that me and DH are babysitting for some friends tonight and that we plan on getting a takeaway once we've put their kids to bed.

All fairly normal and standard, or so I thought.

My announcement - re the takeaway, has been met with the utmost disapproval and I am apparently massively out of order to even think about ordering food to another persons house whilst I am there Confused

So - am I??

As it happens, I could hold a huge fuck off party in this friends house and she wouldn't give a shit, so long as she was invited Grin and I will still be ordering takeaway, which she knows about and isn't bothered about either

My DB is a plumber ...... Some of the stories I have been told make me Hmma lot!!!!

Rule 1 . Never piss off your plumber
Rule 2 . Never leave your toothbrush in a bathroom if you have pissed off the plumber.

I won't even mention where they shit of the toilet is not plumbed in yet!

Cookingongas · 01/04/2016 15:52

Sometimes- where?!?! I've never shat outside of a toilet! Or mistreated a toothbrush! I suddenly feel like a very naive plumber!

thebestfurchinchilla · 01/04/2016 16:00

I would say it's fine but I would say to the homeowner, " I was thinking of ordering some takeaway if that's ok with you?" just out of courtesy as you will be using their things to eat it I presume, cutlery, crockery and filling their bin. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/04/2016 16:00

You need to ask your colleagues what is so offensive about the kind of takeaways they order! Extra stinky curry? Chip shop chips can stink a room out.

I'd mind if you didn't clean up after yourself / put stuff in dishwasher and bin but apart from that, it's hard to imagine the problem.

Do they drink heavily when they get takeaways? Umm...

thebestfurchinchilla · 01/04/2016 16:04

I wouldn't cook for my babysitter as I would normally use them in the evening after meal times but I would leave some things out such as a bottle of wine, snacks etc (for grandparents normally NOT teenagers!)

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/04/2016 16:04

Eh, how weird, I'd think nothing of it.

MyAmDeryCross · 01/04/2016 18:43

I'm sure as long as you don't have a curry in their bed leaving stains and leaving the takeaway packets on their bedside table with a few discarded white lightening bottles I'm sure a take away at someone else's house when you are using your free time to look after their kids wouldn't raise an eyebrow

Fourarmsv2 · 01/04/2016 19:25

If we have people doing work in the house we offer pizza / bacon sandwiches / drinks / biscuits....

I know the coffee & energy drink preferences of most frequent visitors and will buy in specially if we are having work done.

I will admit that I hate it if someone uses my loo for a smelly no. 2 and I'm not sure expecting it and go in. But that would be the same with my family! I just avoid using the downstairs loo for the duration and hope they leave it clean! There's every cleaning, disinfecting and de-ponging spray known to man in there so no excuse not to!

Juanbablo · 01/04/2016 19:36

The last time I babysat for a friend's kids I ordered a Chinese. I was there from 6:30pm until 2am and didn't have time for dinner before I left. I washed up my plate and cutlery and put my containers in the bin. No problem!

BeagBoo · 01/04/2016 19:57

Heh, a plumber said they were working on a big job. /childish

Trumpton · 01/04/2016 20:39

BeagBoo. grin

Trumpton · 01/04/2016 20:40
Grin
AnnaMarlowe · 01/04/2016 20:46

What a strange reaction!

I can't think of any possible reason that you'd be offended someone ordered food to your house?

What could go wrong?

Dotheskankyleg · 01/04/2016 20:50

I think they're just a bit precious. Nothing wrong at all with what you're doing OP, they're the weird ones by a mile!

Jelliebabe1 · 01/04/2016 20:51

But whyyyyyyy did they think it U? I don't get it?!?!?!

Alexa444 · 01/04/2016 21:54

How weird. I used to all the time and once the kids were older they left me extra cash to feed them too.

DiscoGlitter · 01/04/2016 22:05

Eh? I must be completely missing something there as I fail to see how ordering a takeaway once the kids were in bed asleep is rude.
If you ordered the takeaway, made the wide awake kids sit at the table and just watch you sit on the sofa scoffing your curry or whatever whilst cackling "mwhahaha" I could see their point.
They're being weird. Ignore 'em and enjoy your takeaway!

ElderlyKoreanLady · 01/04/2016 22:11

As long as you're not paying for it with money you found in their bedside drawer, I think you're safe Wink

blueturtle6 · 02/04/2016 07:22

No problem to ordering takeaway, and always offer tradesmen drinks and snacks, I figure I get drinks provided at work why shouldn't they.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 02/04/2016 07:30

In all my years of babysitting it has never ocurred to me to do that, I always eat before I go round. But nothing wrong with it. They all have a minimum charge of about £20 for delivery round here though.
