To think if your car hits someone else's car, you should pull over??

I was in slow moving traffic today on an incline, a lady in front of me, maybe 60's, started to roll back... And back... And straight into the front of my car (which is brand new!! Confused)

I've never been hit / hit something before and all I know is that you should pull over...

She drove forward and looked over her shoulder at me, I gestures to pull over, she didn't. The slow moving traffic kept moving. I bibbed her and gestures again and she didn't stop! Some time later she turned off (but not before I took a picture of her plate.)

My car is actually fine. The number plate is loose and the bottom bumper / piece of car is a bit wobbly but my DH said its very easy to rectify and it will be as good as new.

But that's not the point right? She should've pulled over? I admit to bibbing her around 5/6 times throughout the drive and gesturing to her to pull over, but I'm not exactly threatening looking, early 30's mother with two under 5's in the car?

You can report her but bear in mind that if someone hits you like this you are actually at fault for not leaving enough rear clearance for them if they need to roll back etc. Someone once reversed into my dad (who had left what I would consider a reasonable gap) and my dad was found at fault.
That said she did leave the scene.
As PP have mentioned witnessed are the problem here as well.

Yes you poor thing. It's shit when you realise other people aren't honest!
I had a thread about this years ago; stationary refuse truck in front, green traffic lights, I pulled out to go round as the bloody truck just decided to move off. Lights change and I'm left in the wrong lane. Some twat then comes towards me, takes off my wing mirror and keeps going.

This thread highlights the importance of keeping a stash of bibs in the car.

We were hit by a car and our wing mirror was ripped off. We had the make, model, colour and reg number of the car and also the address as it was around our estate and we found the car.

The police did nothing and the insurance company said they couldn't prove it (even though I had in my possession, the bit of wing mirror that was missing from their car that had fallen off on impact).

Was a complete waste of time.

Collaborate - what do you call it then?! Hmm

I had someone crash into the front side of my car and they drove off. I chased them jumped out at the lights and they told me to fuck off you cunt then drove off as I took a picture of their number plate. Their car was completely smashed where they had driven into me.

I reported it to the police and my insurance. Surprise they were not insured Confused but paid up about 3 months later. I am not sure if they got a seperate fine I hope so and points on their licence

Yes report it

treaclesoda · 30/03/2016 10:21

I've never heard the term 'bibbed' before either OP. I like it though Smile

Sorry about your car. We had a four year court battle when a driver tore the side out of our car on a motorway and didn't stop. We won in the end but only because they tripped themselves up by changing their story. If they'd been more consistent with their lies we would have ended up seriously out of pocket.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/03/2016 10:26

She might not have realised that she had hit your car, and thought that you hit her.

I was a witness to the same thing once. Queue if traffic on a slight incline. We watched one car ever so slowly roll backwards into the car behind. Both drivers got out, lots of angry gesticulating. They came over to ask if there were any witnesses as the car in front, the car that rolled was absolutely admamant that they had been stationary and the car behind had rear ended them. The driver was mortified when we told that yes it was actually them at fault. They genuinely had no idea they were rolling, and assumed the impact was not their fault.

I have a dash cam in my car now. It's brilliant! Never needed it, but whenever I see a thread like this I do realise that a cam would prevent many an injustice.

KP86 · 30/03/2016 10:37

A car never 'needs' to roll backwards. Learn how to do a proper hill start, get your handbrake fixed or drive an auto.

Tricky situation, OP. I would report it at least to your insurance, just in case the other driver tries to get in first.

As others have said, the thread last week was not kind towards the driver behind, but there seems to not be a time limit on when the original driver can report and claim so you need to get in first...

DrDreReturns · 30/03/2016 10:47

Something similar happened to us. A woman pranged our car in a car park and drove off. Fortunately someone else witnessed it and was happy to give a statement. End result was her insurance paid for the damage and she had to attend a driving awareness course!

Andrewofgg · 30/03/2016 10:47

Report of course. People who leave the scene should be prosecuted.
