AIBU to think this person is all shades of incorrect?

Person A (person Wrong) " I am really looking forward to going away next weekend"
Person B (person Right) "ooh are you away two weekends in a row? How lovely, where are you off to?"
Person A "no Im only away one weekend, to Liverpool"
Person B "oh I thought that was the weekend after next?"
Person A "it is, next weekend. The weekend after next"

What??

On a tuesday, if you say next weekend, that means the coming weekend right? Apparently if A meant this weekend coming she would have said this weekenz and I should know next weekend means the weekend after next.

And this woman wonders why people get so confused when they talk to her.

I had this out with my brother a few weeks ago when I asked if he wanted to come to Florida "next November", i.e. November 2017. November 2016 is THIS November.

I would definitely say "next weekend" means the weekend after the coming weekend, which would be "this weekend".

Doubledeckers · 29/03/2016 14:32

ItWillWash has defined the terms perfectly

DessertOrDesert · 29/03/2016 14:36

And just to throw you more, my weekend is Fri/Sat, which really messes with people's brains when the first get here!

Next Wed would be in April, not tomorrow.
Next Friday, up for debate, and I'd clarify.
Next weekend, 2 April.
But it should all be banned, as its soooo confusing.

TempusEedjit · 29/03/2016 14:44

You asked for a debate but all you wanted to hear was that you were correct.

Maybe next time Wink

Katedotness1963 · 29/03/2016 14:44

itwillwash has it exactly right.

carabos · 29/03/2016 14:48

Today is Tuesday 29 March. Saturday 2 April and Sunday 3 April are "this weekend". Saturday 9 and Sunday 10th are "next weekend".

whatevva · 29/03/2016 14:52

Person B "oh I thought that was the weekend after next?"
Person A "it is, next weekend. The weekend after next"

So that makes 'next weekend' the one after two more weekends? Hmm

This weekend refers to the current one, or nearly current one if it is Friday (or maybe even Thursday) whereas the 'next weekend' is the next one to come along, like the next train.

RebeccaCloud9 · 29/03/2016 14:58

Ha, I've started a similar thread before, but for this/next day eg this Friday.

I think, said today:

2nd and 3rd April = this weekend (as in the END of THIS week that we are currently in)

9th and 10th April = next weekend (the END of NEXT week)

16th and 17th April = the weekend after next (the end of the week after the next week)

Why would you have 2 phrases meaning the same thing (as has been suggested that this and next weekend both refer to the coming weekend) - that's just too confusing!

We have this mix up in our house constantly, grown up DCs announcing plans etc.

On a TUE if someone said next weekend i'd assume the very next weekend coming.

On a TUE if someone said this weekend i'd assume the same.

On a THU or FRI if someone said this wknd i'd assume the following 2 days.

On a THU or FRI if someone said next wkend i'd assume the wknd after the one about to happen.

WanderingNotLost · 29/03/2016 15:00

ItWillWash has it 👌🏼

DryIce · 29/03/2016 15:03

I'm with the consensus.

This weekend today would be 2nd/3rd April, next weekend would be the 9th/10th.

Perhaps this theory makes more sense if you think of it as:

'This week' - end (i.e., the end of this week)

and

'Next week' - end (the end of next week!)

AtiaoftheJulii · 29/03/2016 15:07

Defining next weekend as the weekend after next is delightfully self-referential!

If you get 'next day delivery', it doesn't come the day after tomorrow.

Whitney168 · 29/03/2016 15:10

Yep, this:

Last weekend = Sat/Sun just passed
This weekend = this weekend coming
Next weekend = the next weekend after this one.

flowery · 29/03/2016 15:14

On a Tuesday, 'next weekend' means the next weekend there is, i.e. 2/3 April.

By Friday there's a bit more ambiguity, and 2/3 will be 'this weekend', and 9/10 will be 'next weekend'.

I realise my logic is flawed. But that's how I would understand it.

RealityCheque · 29/03/2016 15:22

Most of you are wrong.

Last weekend = ALWAYS is the one just gone
Next weekend = ALWAYS is the one coming

This weekend can mean either of the above:

On a Monday, one may say "what did you do this weekend?"
On a Thursday, one may say "what are you up to this weekend"

angelos02 · 29/03/2016 15:31

One thing I am sure of is Most of you are wrong is the definition of arrogance!

EastMidsMummy · 29/03/2016 15:31

I don't think I mentally assign a weekend to the preceding week. (A piece of string has two ends, right?)

And I don't think it's linguistically obvious that this weekend = the next weekend there is whereas next weekend = the one after that.

So I am happy to go with Reality Cheque's plan...

umizoomi · 29/03/2016 15:33

As next week is the week beginning Monday 4th April, next weekend would be the 'weekend' or 'end of next week' so Saturday 9th April.

This weekend refers to the one coming at the end of this week.

Otherwise, in your scenario, the next weekend/end of week occurs but the the next week.

umizoomi · 29/03/2016 15:35

Occurs Before the start of the next week!!

2rebecca · 29/03/2016 15:35

The coming weekend (if say it's Tuesday today and you're taking about 4 days time) is THIS weekend. NEXT weekend is the weekend after THIS weekend, although I'd generally just say "the weekend after this weekend" or give dates to save confusion.

EastMidsMummy · 29/03/2016 15:36

Sunday is the first day of the week.

2rebecca · 29/03/2016 15:40

not to me, it's Monday. On the 7th day God rested and all that and if you're brought up Christian the 7th day is Sunday, unless you're a 7th day adventist when they prefer Saturday for some reason like the Jews.
Monday feels like the start of the week to me as well.

RebeccaCloud9 · 29/03/2016 15:41

Eastmids, not in the UK. Or according to the International Standard.

EastMidsMummy · 29/03/2016 15:44

Look at any calendar...

(I don't really care about any of this, btw. All it shows to me is that we all need to be clearer about what we mean as there's no accepted standard.)

DoJo · 29/03/2016 15:48

When's next week? Because next weekend will come at the end of it.
