Had full Easter weekend but then back at school for four days. Anyone else in this position?

DS is at school, I'm off (I'm a TA) it's going to be a long 2 weeks. DS will be off for 2 weeks when I go back so it's lucky my sister will be off then or I don't know what I'd do. It's ridiculous really, there can't be many people that are actually able to benefit from these variable holidays.

thecitydoc · 29/03/2016 12:24

Where we live in Scotland it was agreed a few years ago that to avoid confusion the school Easter break, unlike Easter, would not be a moveable feast, so would always be first 2 weeks in April irrespective of when Easter is. When Easter was early like this year or late then schools would close for the bank holidays. As national exams in Scotland begin in May the change was also introduced to benefit pupils who would be sitting exams to given then 2 week in school before exams. Seems to work well. Heard Archbishop of Canterbury on news saying churches are working together to come up with a fixed date for Easter, but unlikely for 10-15 years.

mrsmeerkat · 29/03/2016 12:25

Here we broke up on the 16th March and not back until the 4th April .

MrsMook · 29/03/2016 12:42

The neighbouring county is in. I'm glad I'm in the same LEA as my own children.

I also don't fancy teaching this week when the kids have had a teaser of a long weekend, then 4 days trying to impose normality before breaking up. Bonkers.

mmgirish · 29/03/2016 12:49

I'm a teacher teaching overseas. We didn't have anytime off for Easter this year at all. Last year it coincided with a local national holiday so that was ok. It was the least Eastery Easter ever!

Mouseinahole · 29/03/2016 12:51

Yes in our area the schools have had two four day weeks and on Friday they break up for two weeks!

liz70 · 29/03/2016 12:53

Yes, in Glasgow here; Spring break is always first two weeks in April, regardless of when Easter Sunday falls. So off school on Good Friday and Easter bank holiday Monday, then back in school today until Friday.

Gazelda · 29/03/2016 12:57

Same here. We're taking advantage of the differences on holidays by having a cheap hol 9-16 April.
But some of the senior schools around here are having different breaks to the primary and then having their open days first week back is when primary schools still on holiday). Has caused chaos for Y5s who are looking to make their senior school choices this year. (open say dates weren't announced until very late, many families are booked to go away).

Kim82 · 29/03/2016 13:03

Ds and dd1 at secondary school finished on Wednesday last week, dd2 at primary school is still in school this week and breaks up at 2pm on Friday.

sportinguista · 29/03/2016 13:26

Yes here in Nottingham. What is the reasoning behind this? Does the Easter break have to fall at a set number of weeks etc?

Potterwolfie · 29/03/2016 13:28

We have a month of holidays to cover as some schools are off this week and next, and the others aren't off til mid April. Insane and impossible, stressful for working parents and plain awful planning.

mogloveseggs · 29/03/2016 13:31

Dd gone back today till 8th April as have most of the primary schools. The high schools round here are off now for two weeks. Madness Confused

sportinguista · 30/03/2016 05:40

I can just about cover it as I am self employed but it has taken some juggling of work. When I was working for an employer it would have been difficult as I was part of a small team with one other parent who was the boss. Part of why I left because the onus was always on me to source expensive childcare so she could take the time off. I feel for all the working parents who are having to juggle this one, especially those who have kids in 2 different schools with different holiday patterns.

hopefulclam · 30/03/2016 06:21

Broke up from school on WednesDay April 16th for St. Patrick's Day, and will return on Mon 4th of April Grin. This is in Ireland, both secondary and primary'.

chanie44 · 30/03/2016 06:46

My children aren't off for another couple of weeks.

gingerdad · 30/03/2016 06:47

I do wish they'd decide that Jesus died on the 2nd Sunday in April and leave it at that.

It causes me major headache as work in tourism split Easters are awful to staff. We effectively have 5 weeks of staffing to sort rather than two. Most of our staff are from local schools which are off now. Most surrounding councils are back for two weeks then off.

AppleSetsSail · 30/03/2016 06:54

That's ridiculous, surely it's far more efficient to consolidated the two blocks of holiday?

Mine have been off since last Wednesday, we made the most of their early liberation and headed straight to the French Alps - which are only just now getting crowded. So we're leaving Wink

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 30/03/2016 07:01

In my LA the Easter holidays are attached to the first two weeks of April, regardless of where Easter falls. This year, that means a long weekend, a short return to school, then a fortnight off.

Bunbaker · 30/03/2016 07:02

No. DD broke up on 18th March and is going back on 5th April. She has GCSEs this year and hasn't done much revision this holiday so I'm glad the holidays aren't any later.

melons240268 · 30/03/2016 07:05

We are in South Yorkshire and both mine broke up on the 18th and they go back on the 3rd April. dd school as put on revision classes on today/tom.

CPtart · 30/03/2016 07:07

Yes. Back in for two weeks then off for two. (Lancashire).

Wassat · 30/03/2016 07:14

Yup, mine are in til Friday then off for two- both neighbouring counties have already finished though Confused

RoseDog · 30/03/2016 07:21

My dc school only had good Friday off then have been in all this week and come off Friday for two weeks!

esiotrot2015 · 30/03/2016 07:23

Isnt May half term always in the week that the bank holiday is in ?

Goingtobeawesome · 30/03/2016 07:38

In school here, to do with how long the term would have been if not in school this week.
