We will continue to allow all good schools to expand, whether they are maintained schools, academies, free schools or grammar schools.

And who do you think stated it in their manifesto?

sounds conservative to me. I think it means they will let schools expand and support the reintroduction of grammar schools while at the same time are Ok with agreeing to every other school to become academies until the red tape suffocates any remaining decent teachers motivation completely?

I read that as a positive. I'll be suprised if it's labour as they're anti grammar schools

Anyone thinks it could be read as:

"We intend that good maintained schools will no longer exist?"

Well, if it's from a political manifesto it means:

"We'll feed you any lies we think might get us elected, and then we will completely ignore any promises that we don't fancy keeping".

No. I read it as leave the good schools alone and indeed let them expand

Me too and I suspect, the rest of the English speaking world.

It's from the Conservative manifesto. I said it was a big fat lie if they carry on with their crackpot scheme to force all schools to become academies. Someone else said it was open to interpretation.

I'm just trying to see if me and everyone I've asked in real life is wrong or if it is actually possible to interpret it in that way.

Expand means get bigger.

They will allow the good schools to expand.
They will allow free schools, academies, maintained schools, or grammar schools to get bigger if they are good.
They will not allow poor schools to get bigger.
If a school is good, whatever type it is, it will be allowed to expand. To get bigger. To increase in size.

It is entirely separate from changing the 'status' of a school eg. from 'free' to 'grammar'.

They could allow a good school to expand despite changing it from free to grammar.

Changing they school's type will not change whether it is good or bad.

If it is good it can get bigger.

If it is bad, it cannot.

Surely this is all pretty simple stuff?
