...... Should have simply switched the bloody TV off.

OP posts:
glueandstick · 28/03/2016 22:51

If people think that's bad, they should read some Beatrix Potter. Now that is violent!

multivac · 28/03/2016 22:52
MrsJayy · 28/03/2016 22:53

Have you never seen it I thought everyone had no do not let your 4yr old watch it

DragonMamma · 28/03/2016 22:54

I remember watching it at 7/8 years old and I still can't hear Bright Eyes without a massive lump in my throat.

My dd, of the same age, wanted to watch it this weekend and I said no. Nobody needs to be subjected to the horror that is Watership Down at 8yo!

multivac · 28/03/2016 22:55

ThoughtfulPenny Watch the link above before deciding whether or not to share it woith your daughter, I reckon. It's a great film. But red in fucking tooth and claw.

tabulahrasa · 28/03/2016 22:56

The thing is whether you love it, hate it or care neither way, firstly it's not compulsory to watch and secondly it wasn't just released...

It's a 37 year old film, if you don't know what happens and can't be arsed finding out if it's suitable for your small children, well it's your own fault if they're upset by it.

multivac · 28/03/2016 22:59

tabulahrasa
It's U-rated. That's normally a pretty good guideline for parents, especially when it's also an animated movie about bunnies.

Sad stuff is fine; most animated movies deal with death, loss, grief et al. It's the violence that would have disturbed my kids when they were small.

sweetkitty · 28/03/2016 23:01

Totally agree no one forced anyone to watch it and if you don't know what it's about then your a bit stupid really.

I haven't allowed my DC to watch it yet Eldest 11 youngest 5, youngest would probably hate it no light sabers in it, other three would sob.

shazzarooney99 · 28/03/2016 23:02

My partner made me watch 2001 a space odesey :o{ , however it was good for sending me to sleep.

multivac · 28/03/2016 23:06

"stupid", sweetkitty? Really? For not knowing that a U-rated film includes graphic, bloody, mortal violence?

okaaayyyyyy.....

ijustwannadance · 28/03/2016 23:06

2001 is sooooo bloody long and dull.

I also remember watching the Exorcist with my dad and sis and thinking it was funny with shit effects.

multivac · 28/03/2016 23:10

I'm not 'moaning' about it, by the way. I just have a smidge of sympathy for parents of young kids who may have planned it into their 'family-centric bank holiday activities' for the weekend... and got a bit of a shock when they snuggled up with their chocolate and popcorn...

JeanPadget · 28/03/2016 23:14

Alpaca you're not wrong. I heard Richard Adams speak once, and he said that Bigwig was based on a Para sergeant-major who died at Arnhem. I adored the book so much that I have never watched the film.

Love the description of Bigwig having a touch of PTSD Smile

General Woundwort is fucking terrifying rather disturbing.

AlpacaLypse · 28/03/2016 23:15

Really, our AIBU should be about what are the responsibilities of the BBFC or whatever they're currently calling themselves - the people whose job is to decide what is suitable for children of whichever age?

BathshebaDarkstone · 28/03/2016 23:15

DD 8 loves it. It's a happy/sad ending. Hazel's ready to go.

AlpacaLypse · 28/03/2016 23:15

:) Loads of xposts...

originalmavis · 28/03/2016 23:17

Read the book, not seen the film. I remember the song being so depressing.

YouTheCat · 28/03/2016 23:18

If I wasn't sure of a film, I'd google it.

I don't expect everyone to know about every film released in the last 40 years.

OneLove10 · 28/03/2016 23:19

Yanbu what a bunch of precious idiots.

Mousefinkle · 28/03/2016 23:26

Until yesterday (through reading another thread about this on here), I had absolutely no idea it was a violent movie! Never seen it, never read the book either. Heard the song, seen some pictures of adorable bunnies, it's a U rating and they put it on the TV at Easter. I think most parents who hadn't seen it would presume (as I did), it's just a harmless sweet old movie about some bunnies hopping around in a field.

I've since seen some imagery and boy, it looks good Grin... For me, being a creepy horror movie fan, not for my small DC.

BackforGood · 28/03/2016 23:28

Oddly enough, my dd (who is 17) picked up a copy of Watership Down in a charity shop only last week as she'd heard of it but never read it. I warned her not to watch the film (didn't know it was on this weekend) as, although I remember very little detail of it, I do remember it was pretty traumatising when I watched it as a teen.
Can't really believe it is a 'U' Hmm
Can't believe that any programmer thought it appropriate to put on on a Sunday afternoon either, when yes, I can see that a parent who has never seen it, would assume it was suitable for small dc.

NewLife4Me · 28/03/2016 23:30

YANBU, at school the kids who were precious flowers were upset for a bit but it hardly scarred them.
It's a sad story and there to teach about nature, life and stuff.
I think it's supposed to be a book you read before Lord of The Flies and Animal farm that also have the same life lesson type of stories.
Is the word precursor? Grin

If I had a child who I didn't think would like it I wouldn't allow them to see it until I was sure they'd be ok.

I also suspect the parents complaining think nothing of encouraging Harry Potter to their young children, even the later ones which include death and torture.

SingingSamosa · 28/03/2016 23:46

It's been my favourite book and film since I was about 7 years old. I'd certainly let my 8 and 7 year olds watch it (although the 7 year old refuses to watch anything that's not anime because she only understands anime Hmm ). The 8 year old would probably cry - because she cries at every single film she's ever seen - but would probably like it.

Blackavar was one of the best characters, along with Kehaar. I'm not sure why Blackavar is killed in the film as he isn't in the book!

mumoseven · 28/03/2016 23:50

My bunny died last night. At Easter. My lovely bunny, so I'm really sad. I didn't watch Watership Down

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 28/03/2016 23:51

YANBU.

I have zero sympathy for them.
