To put caster sugar in tea?

Wheresmybippers · 28/03/2016 20:04

I always have caster sugar in for baking so I fill the sugar jar with it instead of buying granulated, specifically for teas and coffees.
My visitors think it's weird but I don't see the difference?!

Pestilential I use less anyway because I disagree with the concept of sugar in tea Grin I use a grain less each time in DH's tea.

a grain less each time - I'm amazed you can count them Grin

I'm just that good Wink

Can you still get those multi colored sugar crystals ?

Cantchangeusernameback · 29/03/2016 09:27

How odd are your guests that they even notice?
If you like sugar, try this www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/rock-candy-geodes-recipe/

mithy · 29/03/2016 09:34

If you keep all those different flours for too long, even in airtight containers, you might get weevils. Eurgh.

howabout · 29/03/2016 10:10

I have a molasses rock idiot Grin

And now I want some proper rainbow sugar crystals Lurking. Never have sugar in my tea but, for a treat, I do eat lump sugar while slurping black tea. I'm told this is perfectly acceptable in Russia.

The only sugar I don't buy is granulated and guests have to make do with caster. Never had anyone complain.

(flour weevils are indeed gross)

I always look closely at my flour for weevils, never seen any but I don't really know what I am looking for or how big they are.

Anyway, I have

Plain flour
SR Flour
White bread flour
Wholemeal bread flour
Rye flour
Corn flour but I'm not sure that counts as flour
Some 'artisan' seedy flour that was on offer in Aldi
Gram flour

Isn't 'flour' an odd word Grin

PestilentialCat · 29/03/2016 14:06

cornflour is flour - you can make cakes with it

bigbluebus · 29/03/2016 14:12

I too have a sugar collection - although no one in this house takes sugar in hot drinks. I have an entire shelf devoted to different kinds of sugar. I have never had to resort to offering castor sugar to a guest for a hot drink but honestly don't see what difference it would make.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/03/2016 14:14

My entire food collection including flours and sugars is out of control.

lavenderdoilly · 29/03/2016 14:21

I use a bit less in my tea but would always use caster sugar if the granulated runs out. And whizz some granulated into caster if that runs out. Wouldn't care less if offered it in someone else's house. I'm not sweet enough. I like sugar in my tea.

magicstar1 · 29/03/2016 14:22

I have a box of amber sugar crystals from 1991 in my cupboard. They look so nice, and I only use them when serving fancy coffee.

I've just googled the one I have and it's £15 per box!! Shock

lavenderdoilly · 29/03/2016 14:23

By the way, never seen sugar lump licking in Russia. Jam instead of sugar in tea but no lump licking. Maybe a recent thing. Used to live there but not for ages.

Totally agree, pointless having granulated sugar if you rarely have call for it. Quite tempted by having a box of sugar cubes though, as the inevitable wet teaspoon dug into the caster sugar makes me want to dump the whole bag in the sink, turn to the offending sugar-taker, and say "now I want you to think about what you did".

lavenderdoilly · 29/03/2016 16:19

Interesting, utter. It was on ration when I was there so maybe that explains the lack of sugar lump licking. I just went without sugar and drank it black when I was there.

Wheresmybippers · 29/03/2016 19:05

Omg yes Dolores!!! Doing that nexttime DH does it 😁

I seem to have found my people - I have granulated, golden caster, muscovado, demerara and icing sugars, I have 00, very strong white, plain white, self-raising white, plain brown, wholemeal, strong brown, gram, coconut and almond flours :)

I don't take sugar in hot drinks, nor use it 'on' anything - the sugars are there just in case I need them one day when baking :) Flours ditto. Don't get me started on my (regularly refreshed) spice collection!

I am a sugar expert, no seriously Grin

The only difference between the two is the density so if you use a teaspoon of each the faster would be sweeter.

If you did it by weight it wouldn't be noticeable hth

lougle · 29/03/2016 20:10

The only thing is that you're going to make a sweeter tea with caster sugar. 1 tsp granulated sugar is 4.17g. 1 tsp caster sugar is 4.69g. Which means you're getting 12% more sugar per cup of tea with caster sugar. So it's not surprising if your guests notice!
