To want to give away books that I own on Kindle?

I have had a Kindle for years and I have bought quite a few books on Kindle where I already own the paper books. The duplicates are firm favourites that I want to read over and over again, and are usually books that are particularly heavy in paper form such as the Lord of the Rings. My DH and DSs have Kindles as well and we have a family library set up on Amazon so everyone can access all the titles. I have just had the following conversation with DH...

Me: Can I take the George R. R. Martin books to the charity shop seeing as we have them all on Kindle?
DH: No, I want to keep them.
Me: Even though you're never going to read them again?
DH: Yes.
Me: Why?
DH: I don't know, I just want to keep them.

AIBU to want to give away these books that will never be read again?

I kept my old kindle keyboard as 'beach kindle' when I got a paperwhite so my lovely paperwhite didn't get grotted up with sand.

Paperwhite is lovely because I can read it in bed in the dark.

YANBU

Old books stink and gather dust...you don't need them twice. I also hate clutter...

I read my kindle in the bath, why wouldn't I?

ASAS · 25/03/2016 21:26

To this question I always answer, "Keep and use the paper books, it's good for kids to see us read for pleasure and a screen doesn't = reading necessarily".

However, if you're streamlining to 600 I'd say they've seen you read plenty!

ijustwannadance · 25/03/2016 21:43

Even if kobo reader broke, you can just download the app on any devise you have. Same with kindle app.

Unless the books are sentimental or valuable first additions I don't see the point in them taking up shelf space. They just sit there getting dusty.

OrlandaFuriosa · 25/03/2016 21:46

Because you might get water on it or drop it?

BarbaraofSeville · 25/03/2016 22:29

I don't count basic kindles as screens because all you can do with them is read books as the browser is so crap.

Nanny0gg · 25/03/2016 22:32

You can't read a kindle in the bath.

Of course you can!

StuntNun · 26/03/2016 06:54

I can't use a Kindle in the bath as I'm very clumsy and would definitely drop it in the water. I looked at getting a waterproof cover then realised I had hundreds of paper books to read in the bath.

A lot of people seem to have skated over the fact that the OP only wants to get rid of books that won't be read again. Yes, I know some people read and re-read but presumably, the OP in best placed to say whether that happens in her household. This is not really a rehash of the books versus Kindle debate (like it's an either/or situation). So, what is the point of holding on to a book that has been read and won't be read again? Let it go to the charity shop where it has the chance of a second useful life rather than being a mere dust-gathering space filler.

YANBU.

Oh Lord, this could be me. I have had kindled since they came out to enable me to take some clothes to wear on holiday, rather than using the weight allowance for books [embarrassed]

I have over 2000 books, so rolled my sleeves up a year ago and decided to ruthlessly streamline my library. I threw 2 books in the bin, they were so tattered and gave the grand total of 6 to a charity shop......... I just could not do it.

My excuse is that if there is a disaster and we lose all power, I will have the means to entertain myself, wipe my bum ano keep a fire burning for a considerable time Grin

Must get onto the peppers board and suggest adding books to the list!

BumpPower · 26/03/2016 07:44

Orlando half the point of giving a kindle is to read in the bath. Invest in a sandwich bag - ziplock for preference, and pop your kindle in before you have bath! Same for the beach!

lessthanBeau · 26/03/2016 07:44

I agree kindles aren't screens the whole look of the page is the same as a paper page, however when I use my Kindle app on my tablet it feels very different to my eyes. I also have my real book collection, but usually get a dodgy copy for my kindles as well, I thought I would never convert but do really love my Kindle. I've donated all books I only read once and if I get a book I love on Kindle then I also buy the real book to add to my collection.
We were having a no screens day the other week and I was reading my Kindle, so DD thought I was cheating, I just said OK, I'll put it away, then went and got the book and carried on readingSmile

diddl · 26/03/2016 07:49

I have a Kindle, but only use it for travelling.

So far have only put free books on it, so have about 200.

When I finish a book at home, I still buy another to read!

Usually from Ebay, so cheaper than buying to put on Kindle.

kaitlinktm · 26/03/2016 07:50

There's a peppers board? Where?

To want to give away books that I own on Kindle?
Toooldtobearsed · 26/03/2016 08:25

You would think that with kindled and a huge library of books I would be able to spell. ....!
Autocorrect thinks not. The PREPPERS board (although I do like a good strong pepper)Grin

cornishglos · 26/03/2016 09:03

I hate owning loads of stuff. I buy books from charity shops and give them back to charity shops.
