to think this paint should not have to have its name changed

Just seen this. I know it's the Daily Fail but I thought this was worth a look.

Of course rape is a terrible thing to happen to anyone but a colour named after a plant is so obviously not meant to have any relevance to the act.

I grew up seeing field after field of yellow so perhaps I am not seeing this in the same way as some, but the English language is full of double meaning words.

The colour reminds me of Broom (I have some in the garden).

SoupDragon · 25/03/2016 15:17

It's just an excuse for the professionally unoffended to have an outing.

Don't be ridiculous. People simply have different opinions to you.

Sparklingbrook · 25/03/2016 15:18

I didn't even know Aldi sold paint. Wouldn't be my first port of call when getting the ladders and dust sheets out.

missbishi · 25/03/2016 15:18

What a ridiculous name. As bad as the tin of "Period Red" I once spotted at B&Q.

HidingUnderARock · 25/03/2016 15:22

There is no way that nobody at the paint company saw that one in advance. Looks like intentional publicity seeking to me.

I do actually dislike that that is the name used for the plant too. There are alternatives. So its named "rape" from the latin for turnip, so its turnip oil? Its own Greek name is napus... napus oil? I am fairly sure it is called Canola in Canada.

Anyway, I digress. The paint tins should be changed.

LaurieLemons · 25/03/2016 15:23

Missbishi - no way?! Shock what were they thinking? Grin

Tbf I think they may have slightly exaggerated her reaction of 'angry outburst' and 'choking'.

"It's just an excuse for the professionally unoffended to have an outing.

Grin Why do you think it should stay as "Rape Yellow"? Who does it benefit? What harm would be done by changing it to "Something Else" Yellow?
CamboricumMinor · 25/03/2016 15:46

There are far worse things to be worried about, yes, it could have had a better name but it's not the end of the world. It's not a pleasant word but it's one that most people will see every time they do their supermarket shopping.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 25/03/2016 15:53

This is what happens when a company doesn't get in a proper translator. 'Rapsgelb' is a perfectly usual name for a shade in German (where the word for the plant is completely different from the word for the act) - and indeed a quick google shows Aldi has sold paint called that in Germany before. They obv had someone from German product management with a bilingual dictionary.

kali110 · 25/03/2016 18:12

cd vergewaltigen really? Learn something new everyday!

boney yes agree with you. Should go back simply to what it's name actually is, rapeseed yellow.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 25/03/2016 18:15

The story is undoubtedly totally fabricated by the DM. Seriously.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 25/03/2016 18:15

Their offices must be painted in Bullshit Brown

maydancer · 25/03/2016 18:43

Why do you think it should stay as "Rape Yellow"? Who does it benefit? What harm would be done by changing it to "Something Else" Yellow? well I guess the manufacturer as spent a lot of money on printing tins, colour charts and the like.
'dandelion yellow' , and 'buttercup yellow' might already have been trade marked by a paint maker.I am speechless at the pure stupidity of this complaint.I wonder whether peopel have a problem with 'gRAPE' as a colour as well? That would be on the same level of barmyness!

maydancer · 25/03/2016 18:44

LOVE the smell of rape on a warm evening!

BertrandRussell · 25/03/2016 19:00

You are, I presume, being ironic?

Fratelli · 25/03/2016 20:35

As a rape victim I think yabu. Rapeseed would have been more acceptable, or even after something else yellow. I'm pleased it's been renamed.

LegoLady95 · 25/03/2016 22:52

Oh dear Aldi. Its wasn't long ago they had to change the name of their 'disco biscuits ' to 'groovy biscuits'.

WallToWallBastards · 26/03/2016 12:20

If a company described something as n*** brown would that be being professionally offended? Confused My grandad has a book of fabric samples from the 30s and that is a genuine colour. Thank God it's fallen out of use now and we don't have to deal with all these professional umbrage takers Hmm
