Price of flowers

So I went to a florist to buy flowers for my DH's birthday yesterday. Wanted something a bit different and therefore didn't just get them at the supermarket. Picked out four bunches of spring flowers, £1.50 each, and two bunches of daffodils, similar price. Asked the florist to put them all together. She disappears and makes me wait for a VERY long time. Eventually she returns, flowers all in one bunch, in wrapping paper and with bow, and says: That'll be £20 then.
AIBU to think she is BU to charge £11 to wrap some flowers with a bow?

I get out florist to do thAt and she chArges about £1.50.

Seems odd. What did she say when you queried it?

I didn't I was so stunned, I just paid, left and promised myself never to return

£11 is a lot, but then it sounds like the flowers themselves were pretty cheap. In total, I don't think £20 is too much for a nicely wrapped and presented bunch of flowers that have been put together by a trained florist, the extras like the ribbon and cellophane aren't cheap for them to buy.

Next time just buy the flowers and wrap them yourself.

Daffs (one of my fav flowers) are 99p a bunch at all supermarkets including marks and spencer at the moment. Seems very pricey. Did you question her £11 for wrapping?

Seems about right, you ate paying for her training and expertise.

If you want to put together your own combination of flowers on Interflora, the base charge is £15, and then the price per flower is on top. So I am not entirely surprised it was considerably more than the base charge of the flowers that you paid. You are covering her time in preparing the bouquet (and you said it was a long time), her knowledge and expertise of how to do it/what looks good, and then the materials themselves - which aren't actually that cheap wholesale, never mind retail.

In all - no, that's a reasonable price for what you received: but next time, think about asking up front how much it will be. The actual cost of flowers in any "made-up" bouquet, whether you're buying it from the florist or buying it to send to someone, is often less than half the cost of the finished product. If it bothers you, or you think it's too expensive, better to buy the flowers separately and do a DIY job.
