to think one person shouldn't hold a village to ransom?

I have recently moved to a rural village. It's about 400 houses - a friendly place to live and very good at holding village events. With the Queen's birthday coming up the parish council wants, along with many other places across the country, to hold a street party on the Sunday afternoon (June 12th). The only viable street to close (because of emergency access to an old people's home and through access) would inevitably mean that some houses would have their access cut-off. One of these houses has already advertised an open garden on the same day as part of the national open garden scheme. The chap concerned has been very vocal/aggressive in campaigning for the street party not to happen. I have some sympathy for him as this open garden was organised many months ago and I recognise that the open garden raises money for charity- however his house is up for sale so it seems very hypocritical. I'm told that for whatever reason the road closure would have to be on a Sunday and that the consensus was that the afternoon would suit the village better- so it seems that it is not possible for the date and time of the street party to be moved. I would like to get involved with the event to meet more people and get involved more with village life but I don't want to walk into a big feud! Is the house owner being unreasonable?

Take a step back, no need for you to get involved.

RidersOnTheStorm · 23/03/2016 13:45

The Queen's birthday is June 10th and it's been made a public holiday so people can celebrate. The others are being VVV unreasonable. Have it on the right day. Problem solved.

Sounds more 'Hot Fuzz' than Miss Marple to me Grin

Everyone and their mums are going to the open garden

EdithWeston · 23/03/2016 13:55

An extra Bank Holiday! Are you sure?

The official birthday is Saturday 11th (it's always a Saturday) but there are also birthday events on the Friday (service of thanksgiving at St Pauls) and it's the Duke of Ed's actual 95th birthday (no public celebrations planned for that).

Ignorant here--does every resident of the street have to agree before a council can use it for an official street party? Sounds like it, and I'm simply curious.

Obviously I'm with Garden Man. Or I might be, if I actually knew what an Open Garden was. Might start a thread...

GarlicShake · 23/03/2016 14:00

Nope, Edith :( www.gov.uk/bank-holidays

But pubs are going to open longer.

RiverTam · 23/03/2016 14:00

Team garden here too.

I'd object purely on grounds of being anti-monarchy, so by default I'm on his side......

MyKingdomForBrie · 23/03/2016 14:03

The poor chap, this is so mean! 'Holding the village to ransom' - complete bollocks!!! He's just hoping to run his open garden as planned without selfish arses deciding they're more important and trampling all over it. The Parish Council need to re-open their avenues, I bet they haven't explored all options at all.

heron98 · 23/03/2016 14:07

From someone who lives in an inner city two up-two down with no garden this thread is fascinating to me!

RockUnit · 23/03/2016 14:18

The man is not being unreasonable.

GnomeDePlume · 23/03/2016 14:19

Team garden here - keep the aspidistra flying!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 23/03/2016 14:23

He is not being unreasonable. The national garden scheme is a massive deal.

No wonder he's moving.

Floggingmolly · 23/03/2016 15:14

He's hardly holding the village to ransom, he organised his first! Confused. it's the rest of you that sound like dickheads

StillDrSethHazlittMD · 23/03/2016 15:24

This is one of those rare things - a totally unanimous agreement (I think) that Garden Man is on the side of law and order and parish council and its supporters are bullies.

I vote OP does indeed tell us name of village and we all go down on the day and enjoy the garden and give him our support. We could all wear specially made t-shirts with TEAM GARDEN on them.

Lunar1 · 23/03/2016 15:26

You all sound like bullies to me. He has had this planned for a long time. First come first served. Just move the party onto a bit of grass some where.

SanityClause · 23/03/2016 15:49

The open garden thing is a really big deal. He will have been planning it for ages, and will be growing things in a greenhouse, to plant out the few days before the event.

The parish council have half a half-arsed plan so far.

There are sure to be other options, they just can't be bothered to think of them.

Team Garden Man here, too.

A friend of mine was on a garden tour two years ago, in July, and she literally started working the previous September, and worked (as much as possible) through the winter and then was getting up at 4:30 or 5 a.m. to go out and work on it before going to the office, in the weeks leading up to the event, and working under lights at midnight.

For those who participate it is a really big deal and not something to be brushed off.
