To Think, If You Do Some Laundry

You hang it up/bung it in the drier when the wash is finished? What you don't do is leave 3 loads in the washing basket for hours so they are partially dry and completely crumpled?

It's lovely when people help, it really is, but when it's a half-arsed job it doesn't feel quite so lovely IYSWIM?

Mildew Ifailed. Sometimes you get away with it but if it happens the smell is horrendous and takes forever to get rid of.

fourage · 23/03/2016 07:01

ifailed- damp clothes even washed ones are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.
Washing clothes does not make them sterile, so leaving washed damp clothes lying will allow microbes to grow and make even clean clothes smell rancid. I am sure a few hours is fine, but leave them for a day or two and they will stink.

DaniBubbles · 23/03/2016 07:23

I had this problem yesterday. DP's idea of being helpful is dumping leaving his dirty clothes in front of the washing machine, or even occasionally in the machine. Yesterday must have been one of those super helpful days because when I went to get the washing, the machine door was open with wet clothes inside and his dry but dirty ones bunged in too! Surely it's not difficult to notice they are wet? Could he not have, oh I don't know, maybe done something about it???

Ifailed · 23/03/2016 07:34

Mildew? Blimey some people must be leaving damp clothes around for weeks to have fungus growing on it!

Mind you, I don't use fabric conditioner as I think its a waste of money, and I find the smell of that offensive, especially on damp clothes left lying around.

YADNBU

Meddling with the washing (especially when I am in full flow have loads piled up in order of drying time) gives me the RAGE

You want to 'help'? Do the bloody ironing which you know I hate

anklebitersmum · 23/03/2016 07:39

We have one central laundry basket in the bathroom. All clothes wanting washed have to go in there. I like to sort stuff too, DC wear black shirts to school, OH wears white. If they were all washed together OHs shirts would be grey. I use different detergent for whites and darks, too, so stuffing clothes randomly into the washer would not work for me.

HemlockStarglimmer · 24/03/2016 07:53

I have found my people!

I'm more than happy to do the laundry as I'm the only one who does it properly Grin

But I'm working extra days this week and my husband is off work using up holiday allowance before the end of the month. So I'm hoping he does it correctly. I'm not holding my breath. He is completely banned from putting any of mine or our daughter's stuff in the dryer though, after a few mishaps of shrunken tights and swimming costumes!

PunkrockerGirl · 24/03/2016 08:04

Yanbu. Dh does a load of washing then leaves it in the basket all day for me to deal with when I get home from work Hmm
Drives me mad.

fourage · 24/03/2016 13:25

And- runs for cover- I actually enjoy doing laundry.

Today I have 5 loads outside, it's a beautiful bright spring day, with a little wind. Perfect for drying clothes. The laundry will come in nearly dry, smelling fresh of the outdoors and soft.
A bit of a miracle to see sweaty stinking sportsgear and grubby shirts being transformed into such fragrant items.

oliviaclottedcream · 24/03/2016 15:41

Fourage You mean you don't mind doing the washing? You do realise you're shackled by the shackles of global - patriarchal oppression do you not?
I've just been labelled an air-head female for admitting as much..

fourage · 24/03/2016 15:49

Really olivia? On this thread? Did I miss that?

oliviaclottedcream · 24/03/2016 16:29

No, not this thread. I think it's called " why do we have to do all this"? or something like that. I abandoned it once the insulting language started flowing. Anyway, airheadfemale will be my next name change!! Smile

JeanPadget · 24/03/2016 16:38

I always thought that my passive-aggressive XH refused to hang the damp laundry out just to annoy me and stop me asking him to do it. This thread is making me wonder if it was biology all along.

Nanny0gg · 24/03/2016 16:41

You mean you don't mind doing the washing? You do realise you're shackled by the shackles of global - patriarchal oppression do you not?

fourage · 24/03/2016 16:49

jean, not biology, just circumstance.

I am at home all day, it doesn't make sense for him to be hanging out laundry/taking it in. He is pretty hapless and wouldn't check pockets for coins, tissues, he's mix up colours with whites.
Easier for me to do all the laundry, and as I said I enjoy it.

CruCru · 24/03/2016 17:00

I'm rather anal about the washing. Mainly because I have a system and I know what is needed when. I don't think my husband has ever used the washing machine.

fourage · 24/03/2016 17:12

crucru- same here. I have a system too. Everything works like clockwork. My OH has never used the washing machine either.

OzzieFem · 24/03/2016 18:33

Oops. Guilty. I have left the washing in the machine and not hung it up for days. Had mildew once but that was mainly due to high temps and humidity over here not weeks left lying in the washing machine, just a few days. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

fourage · 24/03/2016 18:37

Not possible for me to leave washing in the machine for a few days. Most weeks I do 10-12 loads.

oliviaclottedcream · 24/03/2016 18:40

You do realise that there are corners of MN where you can taken out and flogged for this kind of talk you lot, don't you?

"I just hope you don;t have a DD you you pass this crap on to, do you" ? I was asked.

Actually I have 2 Smile
