AIBU to think airport security were wrong to do this?

This isn't an issue to me, I was in fact, very grateful and happy.

DD is 7; she has a mini-suitcase for the plane. She accidentally packed a body spray, a family member had brought her. Airport security let it go through, when she started to tear up.

AIBU to think this wasn't that smart?

Jesus. So many typos! Sorry.

amazingtracy · 21/03/2016 19:19

Ah listen! Airport security is all an act! Nothing more than a drama production to give the illusion of power and control.

So they they stop all the potential terrorists (passengers) all at the same point to check them for potential bombs. They remove the potential bombs from these would be terrorists and throw them unmarked, unchecked into a large bin. with the rest of the potential bombs from fellow potential terrorists
Then they allow these same wannabe terrorists go on their way leaving the potential bomb sitting in an open bin at the point where all passengers must pass to proceed.

Now I'm not a clever person- but there's major flaws in that plan!

liinyo · 21/03/2016 19:26

I recently travelled round Argentina by plane and they didn't even ask for liquids to be in a separate bag, let alone check them. Presumably they are not so concerned about terrorist attacks as we are. It speeded things up but it did make me feel a little uneasy. .

AnneElliott · 21/03/2016 19:31

DS also got a pat down at the airport when he was 3. Man said he was really good as most kids screamHmm

BatterseaParker · 21/03/2016 19:35

I think we should have a choice on airport security.

All those who think it's a waste of time designed by power mad control fanatics to oppress the people should be able to by pass the entire process and fly on planes with no screening.

Everybody else can accept the process and fly on security screened planes.

magimedi · 21/03/2016 19:37

And the most intelligent & sensible post award of 2016 (I know it is early) goes to BatterseaParker.

Drquin · 21/03/2016 19:40

Can I book a seat on one of your flights please Battersea?

ptumbi · 21/03/2016 19:40

Odd, isn't it, that no-one gets searched before boarding a train, a high-speed vehicle carrying 500+ plus people - um, actually you are, if you cross borders. The Eurostar stations have airline-like security, baggage checks, etc (no liquids rule tho). Many stations on the continent have baggage screening and xrays.

LightTurquoise · 21/03/2016 19:47

The poor pilot for the ones who don't want security!

Ah! Airport security have a heart! Who knew?

amazingtracy · 21/03/2016 19:52

battersea think about it? why bother with all that crap bothering to put your bomb in 100ml portions and in a clear plastic bag- when all you have to do is dump it in the bins provided before heading safely to your destination of choice?

You don't even have to bother going to the airport with ground to air missiles-like the Russians did.

BoffinMum · 21/03/2016 19:52

I have professional dealings with the sector. The liquid thing is pretty much redundant, according to my contacts. It is part of the theatre of security.

BoffinMum · 21/03/2016 19:56

I think that was a completely pointless post. Battersea, it is not an either/or, it's whether it is fit for purpose. They can tweak how sensitive to have settings and how punitive to make screening processes and they need to be sufficiently responsive to circumstance otherwise it really does become an expensive waste of time.

lazarusb · 21/03/2016 19:57

I took two wooden caskets with cremated remains through an airport. They were x-rayed and I told the guards what they were and they just let them through - they could have been stuffed with heroin for all they knew!

HelsBels3000 · 21/03/2016 19:58

*Makes mental note to remember to cry next time I turn up at security with a bottle of Chanel foundation not in clear plastic bag but in make up bag.
Fucking security bastards Angry

Jaimx86 · 21/03/2016 20:00

I've accidentally taken bottles of water through a couple of times, including a 75cl one from Iceland Shock

CallousAndStrange · 21/03/2016 20:04

Bloody ridiculous some of these things. My mum got strip searched on an INTERNAL flight because she has artificial joints which set off the scanners. She explained but they were having none of it. She was in tears. So, so cross about that.

Clafford · 21/03/2016 20:09

I think they took a sensible approach here.

My daughter when age 4 set off the scanner and had to go through the big plastic bubble on her own and was very upset. Now 6, when we go to an airport (not that often sadly) she won't wear jeans or trousers with a metal zip, won't wear a jacket, won't wear boots with zips, won't wear hair clips and won't carry her bag. The entire journey to the airport is spent in a near panic about setting the scanner off.

TheSinkingFeeling · 21/03/2016 20:14

It's madness when you can buy a bottle of spirits and matches/a lighter as soon as you clear passport control. What more do you need for a very effective bomb than that?

mygrandchildrenrock · 21/03/2016 20:15

I used to travel frequently and often had tampons in the middle zip bit of my handbag. Sure enough, at airports in the UK, States & Caribbean not stealth boast honest the zip would get undone, a young man would have a quick look and zip it up again as fast as he could.
I've always said the best way to bring explosives on board is in a tampon or underneath one!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 21/03/2016 20:17

I've found if you take rectangular cartons of juice in your hand baggage they don't get picked up. Which is worrying.

queenofthepirates · 21/03/2016 20:23

Try going through Israeli security at 2am with a group of pilgrims who have all filled little bags with soil from Jerusalem and water from the Jordan to take home. I used to be a tour leader and nothing really prepared me for the screaming I got every single time. They would pull a member of the group out, ask them questions then ask me the same questions to see if our stories matched. If they didn't, I got pulled out and interrogated. I was often left shaking.

fakenamefornow · 21/03/2016 20:30

My kids are in tears if they DON'T get patted down by security. We have to pretend we're security afterwards and pat them down.

justaguy · 21/03/2016 20:38

BatterseaParker -- I think the flight crew may disagree with your plan. Along with the residents of Lockerbie, and people who worked in the World Trade Center.

(Just playing devil's advocate -- I agree it's mainly theatre. But when atrocities do happen, they don't just affect the people who were on the plane...)

TheSinkingFeeling · 21/03/2016 20:39

justaguy, those flights WERE screened
