To ask when (or if) your baby slept through the night

... and what you class as 'through the night'. Just trying to work out what is 'normal'.

Out of my NCT group I apparently have the only baby that does not sleep 7-7 or thereabouts.

My baby is 9 months and on a good night will wake at 10 or 11 for a feed and then again at 5ish, waking for the day at 6.30/7. He's breastfed (not sure if this makes a difference).

DS slept through at 6 months. Then the 9 month sleep regression hit and nearly killed us. We did one night (one hour) of controlled crying when he was 13 months (he whined and I went in every 5 mins) now he sleeps most nights 7-6. If he's does wake, it's a quick cuddle & back down. We have our life's back and DP is not falling asleep at the wheel on the way to work any more.

Each child is different. Read around the topic/techniques/routines etc and do what's best for you and your family.

Dd slept from midnight ish to 7 am ish from.6 weeks to 6 months

The next time she slept thru or rather I did, she was 11 years old. SadHmmGrin

Kim82 · 20/03/2016 22:11

To me sleeping through the night means going to bed around 7pm and not waking up til the morning (6am at the earliest being classed as morning), not including being woken for illness or teething.

Ds was 6 months
Dd1 was 5 months
Dd2 was 2yrs, 7 months
Dd3 was 17 months

thisagain · 20/03/2016 22:11

Around 2-3 years. All 3 of them.

MrsRogerSterling · 20/03/2016 22:16

Dd1 from about 8 months. Dd2 still waiting, she will be 5 this year in August and still gets up at least twice a night and either gets in with me or is returned to her own bed.

AimUnder · 20/03/2016 22:18

14 months, 10 hours through the night.

JsOtherHalf · 20/03/2016 22:19

DS was 5 months before managing 7 hours or so. Then at almost a year he started doing 12 hours :D.

Writerwannabe83 · 20/03/2016 22:21

At 10 months old but only because I was on my knees and enlisted the help of a Sleep Consultant.

Prior to her saving my life my DS's sleep (BF) was a total nightmare. I would have given anything for a night like yours OP Grin

StubbleTurnips · 20/03/2016 22:22

DD has just turned 3, it's not happened yet. She wakes twice a night easily, and gets up for the day at 5.30am Hmm

5minutestobed · 20/03/2016 22:24

Ds was about 2 when he first slept through. He is 3 next week and still wakes up most nights at least once or is wide awake at 5am. I think your friends might be telling a few lies!

YoJesse · 20/03/2016 22:24

It happens occasionally. (three) get ready for the 'no honestly, it's still nighttime ' reasoning l!!

bunique · 20/03/2016 22:26

First 18 months but has had phases since of coming in in the middle of the night (now 5). Second slept through at 10 months, couldn't believe it!

DancingDinosaur · 20/03/2016 22:28

11 months for both dc. When they moved to their own room. Think they slept from about 7pm to 6am. Sometimes a little bit earlier. Luckily dh was a morning person and used to get up at 6 anyway. Before that both dc used to wake constantly through the night.

MillieMoodle · 20/03/2016 22:28

DS had just turned 5 and rarely sleeps through the night. However, we've reached a stage now where he gets up and comes into our bed without really waking us up and he goes straight off to sleep again, so we can live with that!
He was still waking several times a night until he was 2. He got much better after one night where I had norovirus and was so exhausted I vaguely heard him shout but didn't get up as I was so dizzy. He settled quickly and after that and then we were down to waking 1-2 times a night which was so much better.
Dc2 is due in September and I'm hoping that he/she is a better sleeper!

Vintage45 · 20/03/2016 22:31

Maybe some children/adults like their sleep and do it automatically. I don't nor did my son.

applecatchers36 · 20/03/2016 22:33

Still waking in the night and is 2 1/2 currently pregnant and hoping next one is a better sleeper Hmm

JeanGenie23 · 20/03/2016 22:35

14months, in fact the past two weeks!

She goes to bed at 7.15 with a bottle (7oz), is asleep by 7.30, not having drank all her milk. She will wake by 6.30-6.50 and the remainder of her milk is usually gone by this point.

LocatingLocatingLocating · 20/03/2016 22:38

My ebf DD slept through the night from 5mo and has hardly had a disturbed night since (9yo now!).
My ebf DS slept through the night from 4mo. He is 6 now and LOVES his sleep.
Slep through night = min 8pm-6am.
I do put it partially down to luck, mostly down to them being thumb suckers, and a tiny bit to do with me being very routine-y.

They weren't that easy in the day though!!!!

BettyBi0 · 20/03/2016 22:39

DD1 was breastfed. Gentle attachment parenting style with no sleep training. From 6 monthsish we tried to do bedtime routine aiming for 7ish bedtime. She would wake around midnight, then 3-4 for feeds and then sleep in until 8ish.

Around 9 months she would only wake once in the night to feed around 3-4 am, and sleep 7pm-8am

At 11 months I swapped the last feed of the day to a bottle of formula and she started sleeping right through 7pm-8am ish. It has been pretty good since with only short phases of interrupted sleep when ill or teething.

Around 18 months she started waking from dreams/ night terrors sometimes but on the whole sleeping through.. Touch wood!

NewNameNotTheSame · 20/03/2016 22:41

DD(6)at 3 months, 8-8
DS(15mo) at 4 months, 7-7 but will sometimes have a bottle around midnight maybe once a week to settle him if he wakes with teething pain or is unwell.

Incredibly lucky and definitely not boasting!

ThisWasCrownjewel · 20/03/2016 22:43

DS - now 18mths and has only ever "slept through" on the odd occasion - usually wakes between 2am & 3.30am then goes back off after a cuddle, till about 6.15-6.30am.

DD - only 9 days old but I have to wake her in the night to feed! She slept from 10pm to 4am last night and probably would have gone longer if left to her own devices...

Both breastfed so I'm not sure whether that makes any difference.

EyUpDuck · 20/03/2016 22:44

DD didn't sleep through until 22 months. She woke up hourly between 4-8 months (yes, really!) and then it was anything between 3-10 times a night until she slept through. Tried everything and nothing helped. Then she just randomly slept through one night and it carried on. Very weird. It's totally put me off having any others though.

FrancesNiadova · 20/03/2016 23:01

Eldest DS about 5 1/2 (years)
Youngest DS about 5 1/2 (months)
Grin

DisappointedOne · 20/03/2016 23:09

They aren't meant to sleep through the night!!!!!!

StuntNun · 20/03/2016 23:14

DS1 at about 2 years
DS2 at about 5.5 years
DS3 seems to be getting there at 3.5 years
DS4 started at 11 months but has since stopped sleeping through so it may have been a blip.

I class sleeping through as not needing to settle/feed them between their bedtime and 6 a.m.
