AIBU to buy my 3 year old a train ticket

I was just quizzed by the train guard as to why I bought my 3 year old a train ticket. I know he doesn't technically need one yet but I am 8 months pregnant and would struggle to fit him on my knee for the journey if the train was busy so it means we get two seats. It only cost £2 as well. Surely that's not that strange is it?

Very sensible choice with a booked seat!

To guarantee a seat for her it makes perfect sense. We fly a lot and have always bought tickets for our under-two children for more luggage allowance and to get them seats.

Just had the same thing with the guard on the train home!

I travel to and from Scotland with my son - it's a 6hr journey and I always buy him a ticket with reserved seat, especially as he will often take a nap.

Yanbu. I've got an 18 month old and we got a family and friends railcard for her first train journey when she was just a few months old. I've always got her a seat. Even when she was tiny it was useful as I my elbow spills into the next seat when breastfeeding.
