Tampon tax and mooncups

kippersyllabub · 18/03/2016 17:01

in the news on tampon tax, apparently a woman in the UK spends £70 in a lifetime on tax if she uses pads or tampons.

Aibu to suggest she uses mooncups instead and pay for perhaps 5 of these in a lifetime, costing about a fiver in tax instead and not polluting beaches and clogging sewers.

I was just wondering what the tax was on mooncups

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/03/2016 17:04

YABU
Not everyone wants to use a moon cup, I do use one, my dd doesn't and doesn't want to atm.

kippersyllabub · 18/03/2016 17:04

5% or £1 per mooncup.

If this ever makes it to a directive, it could cover all sanitary protection, whether disposable or reusable.

YABU Not everyone can or wants to use a Mooncup - I avoid them as it seems to have the unwanted side effect of making people a bit preachy. Grin

Grilledaubergines · 18/03/2016 17:16

YABU. I want to use tampons and I'd rather spend out more in order to do that.

zaryiah · 18/03/2016 17:17

Much like those who have benefited from becoming vegan, mooncup users seem to suffer from the terrible affliction of preachiness.

TheCrumpettyTree · 18/03/2016 17:18

But I don't want to use a mooncup.

Stratter5 · 18/03/2016 17:20

Yy inserting a mooncup seems to switch on Smug Mode

Yes, totally unreasonable.

What she shoves in her vagina is her business, not yours.

It's personal preference.

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 18/03/2016 17:23

Yabu

It's a choice, the tax is a separate issue from the fact that some people prefer to use tampons (or pads)

The women who would most struggle to afford the cost of the tax are the ones who can't afford the upfront cost a mooncups

By all means use moon cups but you are not better than anyone who doesnt

DesertOrDessert · 18/03/2016 17:23

Yes, YABU.
I love my menstrual cup, but don't see why anyone should be forced into using one for financial reasons (quite apart from the fact those who could most benifit from the extra £2 per year - assuming £70/lifetime, and 35 years of periods - are the least likely to be able to afford the £20 upfront cost of a reusable cup).

DesertOrDessert · 18/03/2016 17:24

Snap, NotMeNotYouNotAnyone

Chattymummyhere · 18/03/2016 17:26

I have a mooncup and I hate it so don't use. I Could of brought a couple of boxes of tampons for the same price Wink

VoldysGoneMouldy · 18/03/2016 17:31

YABU. I love my mooncup, and it's logical they're better for the environment. But I don't think the solution to a sexist tax is to tell the people paying unfairly "This is your fault for your choice of sanitary product".

The average woman who has periods will have them for around 35-40 years. No woman should be forced to pay more for the novelty of shedding the lining of an organ.

BlueMoonRising · 18/03/2016 17:34

Of course Yanbu to suggest it.

You would be unreasonable to force it, but suggesting it as an option is perfectly acceptable.

meditrina · 18/03/2016 17:42

"You would be unreasonable to force it"

You do not want to know what mental image that brought up
