To think you don't vape in a waiting room full of pregnant ladies?

Just been to my sister's scan. While we were waiting a couple came in. The 'gentlemen' (and I use that term very loosely) either had his hand in a huge bag of crisps or was vaping. We went in just after he came in but I wish I'd said something! AIBU?

Yanbu, very inconsiderate and inappropriate given where he was. Some people are just thoughtless idiots.

Bellasima20 · 17/03/2016 11:36

OP if this was in the maternity unit he was beyond inconsiderate, IMO any man in there accompanying women to appointments are complete 2nd class citizens, they should stand if alls eats taken, be quiet, respectful and not try to piss any pregnant women off in any way!! I'd have asked him to stop I think.

WorraLiberty · 17/03/2016 11:38

It was inconsiderate but I simply couldn't get worked up about the smell of strawberries tbh, no matter how sickly it was.

Same as I wouldn't get worked up if someone was sitting next to me, chewing Juicy Fruit gum or sucking a mint.

They're just smells we have to cope with.

VertigoNun · 17/03/2016 11:40

For some it's not a smell the smell fucks up the autonomic system and you he way more symptoms as a result including a faint.

AuntDotsie · 17/03/2016 11:41

You vapour could kill me, as the strong smells do affect my autonomic system which could cause a faint and people who faint can bang their head and die.

But by that logic, so could a badly placed bag/foot/box if you tripped over it.

Just for balance, when I'd just given birth, I met a woman outside the maternity ward who told me, gleefully, that she was 4cm dilated and in labour. She was on her 3rd fag. I know which I'd prefer her to be doing out of vaping or smoking. Ideally neither, of course, but that's not the world we live in.

LittleBlackTrilby · 17/03/2016 11:41

I don't get vaping in public places generally.

If you couldn't have smoked in there, what are you actually missing? Confused

7Days · 17/03/2016 11:43

It may be unpleasant to some, but not dangerous. I wouldn't do it. It would probably piss me off if someone else did, but that would be me being a grump.

MLGs · 17/03/2016 11:52

I think it's very rude and inconsiderate.

Quite rude and inconsiderate to do it in any enclosed space.

However, doing two different activities that smell (or one, but in this case it was two) in a room full of pregnant women is really inconsiderate. Does he not know about the exaggerated sense of smell in pregnancy?

MLGs · 17/03/2016 11:53

Also this ^^

QuestionableMouse · 17/03/2016 14:12

Yep, it happened in the maternity unit. If we'd been there longer I would have asked him to stop, but sister was called through for her scan a couple of minutes after they'd sat down.

Buzzardbird · 17/03/2016 14:15

Which hospital is this then?

GreatFuckability · 17/03/2016 14:23

urgh. its unreasonable to vape anywhere in a hospital!

MistressDeeCee · 17/03/2016 15:51

I wouldnt vape in a hospital at all so YANBU. I do vape elsewhere though. I think theres an unreasonableness around vaping aside from that, however. Vaping fluid is not an excessively strong aroma, nor does it linger. I read on here about a poster who has to wash her curtains anytime someone vapes at her home, as the smell is so strong! Ridiculous. What happens when she cooks, does she wash her curtains then too? As food smells are stronger and far more varied.

If Im vaping there is no way you can smell it on me unless I sit right next to you or blow vapour in your face (which I wouldnt). Nobody knows I vape unless they see me, and likewise I can't tell another vaper unless I see them, or are next to them within seconds of them inhaling. The problem is its seen as a replacement for smoking, and a way of smokers still enjoying smoking in a way, so the anti-smoking zealots don't like that and are out to make you believe you can smell vape aroma a mile off. Which, of course you can't. There simply isn't enough aroma in the vapour for it to be the type that hangs in the air but we will soon enough be at the "I was sitting in the park with DCs and a couple of vapers were around AIBU to think vaping should be banned in parks?" stage

Who cares about strawberry smells? Anyone that sensitive I have to wonder how they survive in this world, Ive been allergic to "spray" air fresheners since I was 16, and petrol smells make my head woozey too, as do certain perfumes if they are very strong. Vape aroma is a walk in the park compared to that so maybe, wear one of those anti-pollution masks (sorry can't recall correct name for them now)

VertigoNun · 17/03/2016 16:15

You want people with issues like www.sensory-processing-disorder.com to wear masks because you polluted the shared air?

orchidnap · 17/03/2016 16:23

I dont understand all the "well its better than smoking". If he was a smoker he would have to wait till he got outside and couldnt sit doing it in a waiting room, so why cant he wait till afterwards to vape too??

Toxicity · 17/03/2016 16:28

YANBU, I thought it was banned in hospitals?

It's pretty inconsiderate and a bad job if he couldn't wait a short while or pop outside to do it.

MistressDeeCee · 17/03/2016 16:32

VertigoNunIf you're that sensitive its likely a very good idea to wear a mask isn't it, since you are assorted by a variety of strong smells in this world. I didnt say I want them to wear a mask, outside of this thread its not something that crosses my mind much tbh although I do sometimes wonder, based on threads I see here occasionally, about those who comment they have a great range of sensory issues to do with aroma, manage to co-exist with people outside the home eg work colleagues, people they pass in street, shops etc.

My thing with air fresheners, most times I can ask people not to spray it near me. But the petrol smell - well I can't ask or expect people not to put petrol in their cars because the smell affects me can I? I have to find some way to deal with it in this world because its not an ideal world. I wouldnt vape in a hospital, I would in a cinema tho for instance if Im not sat near anybody. I take small puffs and re-inhale, if the smell were that strong it'd certainly be noticed. But, it isn't/ Im still sceptical about vaping causing sensory issues but feel no surprise that its mentioned

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/03/2016 16:34

Slightly off on a tangent, but it really annoys me that the refills for vaping come in a range of flavours.
It's become really trendy amongst a lot of teenagers to take up vaping, when they didn't smoke in the first place! The funky flavours like strawberry, bubble gum and red bull are making it even more attractive. A bit like how alco-pops made alcohol more palatable.
I would say over half of the teens at my son's school vape, even on the school bus.

OP I think the man in your waiting room was rude. It's not banned to vape, but bad manners.

MistressDeeCee · 17/03/2016 17:06

Its Shisha, the teen thing. Whole different ballgame to vaping and has been around a lot longer too

7Days · 17/03/2016 17:08

Shisha?

AppleSetsSail · 17/03/2016 17:09

either had his hand in a huge bag of crisps or was vaping
Huh? They are two very different activities. How can they possibly get mixed up?

This made me chortle.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/03/2016 17:09

Ah. What's the difference Mistress ?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/03/2016 17:12

That made me wonder Apple I was imagining him hiding his vaping pipe in an empty bag of skips and furtively inhaling from the crisp bag.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/03/2016 17:41

Was it Frazzles flavour, OP? Grin

There is a place for vaping in hospitals, e.g. mental health wards, but a waiting room full of pg women isn't it. There really isn't a health concern but for the sake of manners he should have gone and vaped in the loo.

These threads always go the same way though. An OP about a particular vaper's bad manners is seen as an invitation to have a pop at vaping and vapers in general.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties variety of flavours is incredibly important for smokers to successfully switch and not relapse:

The results of this survey indicate that EC liquid flavourings play a major role in the overall experience of dedicated users and support the hypothesis that they are important contributors in reducing or eliminating smoking consumption. This should be considered by the health authorities; based on the current minimal adoption of ECs by youngsters, it is reasonable to support that any proposed regulation should ensure that flavourings are available to EC consumers while at the same time restrictions to the use by youngsters (especially non-smokers) should be imposed in order to avoid future penetration of EC use to this population.

See also this survey which found that 40% of vapers said they would be 'very likely', and a further 20% 'somewhat likely', to relapse to smoking if flavours were restricted.

All the data we have on young people and ecigs shows that regular use is rare and mostly confined to youngsters who were already smoking. See for example ASH, Public Health England and Smoking in England.
