To not want to keep them?

Background - roughly 2 weeks ago my dd who is 3 started talking to some imaginary friends, Zoe and Chloe. All quite sweet and nothing harmful, we often hear her talking to them in the living room if we are in the kitchen.

This morning I was making a cup of coffee whilst DH takes ds to school and I can hear dd saying here Chloe have some toast but share with Zoe.
Thought I would go and film her (bribery material for when she is older Wink ) only to find to my horror that there are two mice sitting on the floor in front of her and she is hand feeding them toast!

General panic and screaming from me and then dd as I have scared her friends!

Anyway DH has just got in to find me bleaching and scrubbing everywhere, he's had a listen and decided we should catch them and cage them as pets!

I'm not being unreasonable to say no fucking way right? I feel sick at the thought of mice breeding and loving in our house, and he is merrily looking at mouse cages on eBay.

I cackled when I read that they were mice!

RubbleBubble00 · 16/03/2016 20:06

go round and fill any holes in skirting and floorboards with wire wool and spray foam - use chop stick to push down. if you have 2 there's more likely 6+ floating about. Check all rooms for droppings

mix56 · 16/03/2016 20:09

Can they sit on a cotton real ?

oh, & be VERY vigilant that "lazy puff twee dog" doesn't get to eat the mice poison, as it kills dogs ! or he will need extortionate visits to vet, blood tests & Vit K to save him ......( I know, because my neighbour put some under their caravan, & the dogs found it......fortunately he said he saw the dogs there, & the poison was gone, if not 2 dead pups.)

FearsomeNasalHairs · 16/03/2016 20:10

So, got back from bnq about an hour ago, massively pissed off due to traffic and prepared to rip DH head off.
Luckily for him he has seen the light googled how to catch a mouse and decided they have to go. He had also made dinner and helped ds with his maths homework.

I have brought a trap that looks like a little White House, I thought I could catch them and let them go, but I dropped the box and the door has snapped shut now I can't open it up again!

DH seems to think he can make a trap with a bucket and a ruler? Can't decide if he is having me on or if this is another ridiculous dickhead stupid idea

OP posts:
Crispbutty · 16/03/2016 20:14

did you film it? :)

Buzzardbird · 16/03/2016 20:16

Ah, he's got that off Tom and Jerry! Do it! You will also need a cleaner with her stockings hanging around her ankles shouting "Thomas!"

mix56 · 16/03/2016 20:17

HHHHa ha, bucket & ruler ! doesn't sound like he was in the scouts !

Buzzardbird · 16/03/2016 20:24

Mice are clever.

To not want to keep them?
FearsomeNasalHairs · 16/03/2016 20:24

Trying to read all the replies, the towie? (Never watched it) pictures made me laugh. DH who knows I am on Mumsnet (he thinks I'm looking for threads about dealing with mice not that I've started one) has just looked over at me and said "this is serious you know mice carry diseases! And they could be breeding" Confused I'm sure I told him that earlier!

There will be no poison, as dog eats everything and I do love the soppy pooch really. I hope mix that your neighbours dogs are ok.
Also do not like the idea of dd finding dead mice around, or rotten mouse corpses decaying under floorboards etc.

FearsomeNasalHairs · 16/03/2016 20:31

No he was not in the scouts although he is pretty handy sometimes.
He, bless him, does have some strange ideas about things (like the mouse pets)

Last week he was looking at Facebook at some follow your dreams inspirational shit meme that SIL had been looking at and said to me:

DH: you don't see unicorns anymore do you
ME: Shock I've never seen a unicorn, they're not real!
DH: seriously? Even in America?
ME: Grin yep!

MumUndone · 16/03/2016 20:31

Ha ha ha! I love this! Now I'm wondering whether my DS might have secret animal friends. I do hope so. Grin

I think you can get humane rodent repellents that plug in, a bit like an air freshener. Assume they emit a sound that we can't hear.

Please don't squish them!

FearsomeNasalHairs · 16/03/2016 20:46

Can you get those plug in things with other pets in the house?
Although I don't think of them as rodents, I think my Guinea pigs might be affected by them?

MartinaJ · 16/03/2016 20:50

My cat recently brought himself a mouse and because I am his alfa slave, he called me to join him in the play (he has this sharp miaow which is call to play). I closed all doors, grabbed a toothpaste cardboard box and together we got the mouse. He seems to think I am a cat as DH only gets them dead or half dead like the rat he brought in once for DH's dinner.

BigQueenBee · 16/03/2016 20:56

We had a bad infestation in a shop I worked at. They were very timid and would scurry off the moment we approached them.
We put down traditional traps as the humane ones are cruel; lead to a long painful death.

TheNoodlesIncident · 16/03/2016 21:13

Corpore is right, they have no bladders so dribble urine everywhere. Very unhygenic and grim

MumUndone · 16/03/2016 21:29

Ah yes, your guinea pigs might also be repelled.

FearsomeNasalHairs · 16/03/2016 21:32

Grin alpha slave!

Is there a lighthearted my usually sane DH has lost the plot thread running somewhere? It's 9:40 and I am sitting with my feet up (literally up on the sofa just incase) and he has decided to paint the skirting boards incase the bleach I put down earlier hasn't deterred them and maybe the paint will disorientate them if they are running along the walls.....

Kpo58 · 16/03/2016 21:54

You can make a trap with a bucket and ruler (you just need to put some food at the bottom of it).

If you do catch them, check on the type of mouse you have. If they aren't a wild breed, then there may only be the two of them (and more likely be the same gender), so you don't need to worry about finding others.

mix56 · 17/03/2016 06:45

they were my dogs fearsome... they were fine, although, we had a repeat performance with one of them !

IMHE those electric repellers, will do the same job as fresh air.
Mice usually have an autoroute, often round the edges of the room.

Have you asked DD, where Chloe & Zoe have told her they live ? she may have spotted where they come in to her room. or have they already made a nest in the bottom of the wardrobe, in shoes, in sock drawer, in pile of furry toys ......

If you do manage to" take them alive", take a LONG drive & hightail it home pronto. do not let them out in your garden/street/city. or send them to one of the mice lovers on here

Just get a trad. trap..... "The gestation period is about 19–21 days, and they give birth to a litter of 3–14 young (average six to eight). One female can have 5 to 10 litters per year, so the mouse population can increase very quickly. Breeding occurs throughout the year." baby mice can start to reproduce after & Females reach sexual maturity at about six weeks of age " (wikipedia)

How long has DD been talking to her imaginary friends?

leelu66 · 17/03/2016 07:09

How did you miss your DD talking to and feeding mice for 2 weeks? Did they hide when you entered the room?

Pixa · 17/03/2016 13:13

OP, have you seen Zoe and Chloe again? This has been one of my favorite threads in a while.

I also recommend humane traps and taking them a good couple of miles away from your house.

FearsomeNasalHairs · 17/03/2016 16:17

Wasn't going to come back and update as I am mortified but for anyone who's interested..

Came down this morning and found Zoe Chloe and Joey(!Sad) in the traps. Didn't take any pics as it was horrible please don't judge me Mumsnet for not buying the humane traps I just wanted them out of my house asap and felt a bit sad for them really.
Then DS got up and DH asked him if he had ever seen a mouse? He Answered saw a few when we moved in a year ago not seen one since Christmas. Really blasé like it is totally normal (he has got asd so will forgive him eventually for not mentioning it before)

Had to go to the Drs, got back and DH goes into the garden to get some tools ready to prep the patio for the decking and it is clear they are nesting in the shed.

Anyone got any tips for evicting mice??

OP posts:
mix56 · 17/03/2016 16:30

more traps, re-set daily, change the bait from time to time, they get wise.

Pixa · 17/03/2016 16:36

Hi OP. Don't be mortified, things happen.

Can you consider getting pest control in? Definitely not the same but when we moved into our house we found quite a bad a flea infestation. We had a few days of spraying, vacuuming, leaving flea bombs around but eventually we called the pest control guy. It was such a relief to have someone come in and deal with the issue.

Best of luck OP.
