Or is that painfully middle class of me?

No one else in my family likes this, so I have to do it specially for me and me alone. Bit of a pita.

Complete and utter first world problem.

Yes, off with you to your own courgette/aubergine clique!

This thread is for aubergine people only.

I'm not sure about the painfully middle class bit, to be honest, but otherwise YANBU.

I do prefer an aubergine with the skin completely charred (I just sit it on a gas ring) and collapsed inside. Mix with lemon juice, garlic and olive oil and eat with homemade pitta breads.

Katarzyna79 · 15/03/2016 22:04

allalonenow sounds similar to way I do it, many cultures share similar recipes ;) Thai and Japanese do tempura veg too its lovely.

you guys had aubergine borta not crunchy I love it though has roasted taste. version I make has no tomatoes, just fresh chillies, finely sliced onion, bit salt, and the roasted deskinned mashed aubergine, serve with rice or chapatti nan whatever you fancy. heaven. husband doesn't like it, more for me!

roast over a the gas hob with skewer or fork prodded in, tastes really good charred like that. in oven just not the same taste. in restaurants I think they use the tandoor oven, ive not gone one...:(

Archaea · 15/03/2016 22:12

Anyone else tried aubergine pakora? Delish!

TattyDevine · 15/03/2016 22:15

Ooh nicotine eh? Does it work if you eat it though, or do you have to smoke it?

I love aubergine, we do it on the BBQ in summer. Also asparagus on the BBQ. I sometimes griddle aubergine but it tends to come out during BBQ season.

I love "Mediterranean" style veg.

TattyDevine · 15/03/2016 22:17

Ah you gotta eat 20 pounds before you get as much nicotine as 1 fag Grin

Still it's free on slimming world they tell me...

But then so are fags...

Yanbu, when I make aubergine parmiagane I always have to buy extra aubergine as i eat too much of it while I'm griddling the next slices!
So versatile, delicious Smile

Haudyerwheesht · 15/03/2016 22:18

Whenever I try to do this I use a tiny bit of oil and it still ends up greasy and floppy - why?!

I do like it in a lasagne though but it's a step too far for dh who says he's already being made to have vegetarian mince so if I remove his pasta then it's essentially not lasagne at all but he's wrong

HemanOrSheRa · 15/03/2016 22:24

Trills · 15/03/2016 22:28

It's like eating slime

scalliondays · 15/03/2016 22:43

Jamie Oliver does a nice easy sicilian aubergine stew (easily found on Google) with capers - although I've improved it by missing out the olives and adding chunks of halloumi - just adding aubergines to shopping list as I type.

missmeg3leg · 15/03/2016 22:50

aubergine - 1 of 3 foods that make me heave....squeaky little f-ers, No 2 avocado, greasy little f-ers & No 3 marzipan, gritty little f-ers ..... I havee had a few Wine bad potty mouth

CheshireChat · 15/03/2016 23:11

Crazypetlady · 15/03/2016 23:45

It's It's a vegetable it doesn't make you a certain class ffs.

RockUnit · 15/03/2016 23:46

YABU. Aubergines belong in moussakas.

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/03/2016 23:50

Dear god I've tried. Tried so bloody hard.

But I cannot make decent aubergine.

I'm a vegetarian for fucks sake.

Help.

BlossomMagic · 15/03/2016 23:53

YABU because aubergines is the food of the devil and baba ganoush smells of ashtrays.

gentlydownthestreammm · 16/03/2016 00:14

I think if I went on Saturday kitchen, aubergines would be my food heaven. Even though I'm a committed carnivore!

My favourite aubergine dish is a Chinese recipe: fish fragrant aubergines. You shallow fry them, and add Chinese seasonings (rice wine, black vinegar, Sichuan pepper, garlic, other lovely things none of which are fishy despite the recipe name) and spring onion. The result is melt in your mouth squishy aubergine in a delicious sauce. I made myself nearly sick gorging on it last time I made it, I ate enough for 4 people...

Oooh Stop it gently, please! That sounds like a recipe I saw on Gok Wan's Channel 4 programme. Are you sure it doesn't have a little splash of fish sauce in it?

PaulAnkaTheDog · 16/03/2016 00:56

What is this aubergine in lasagne nonsense?! Make a proper moussaka!
