AIBU?

to want some ante-natal care?

I may be, being a bit PFB about this.

I'm expecting my first. I'm around 9 weeks. I went to the GP at four weeks and was told that the midwife would ring me to arrange things within a fortnight.

I've heard nothing. Is it too early to go and prod them a bit?

Please, call your GP practice back up again or the local midwifery team. You need to see someone asap.

Btw my midwife said a patient was late so surely they should be made to wait not me and the next 5 patients coz thats how many were backed up it doesnt seem like a faie system

What care do you want at 9 weeks? Listen to the heartbeat, measure the bump??

As long as you are booked in and your scan is booked by 14 weeks for your NT test you're totally on track.

I self referred to my midwives (no GP appointment necessary) at 6 weeks, booming was 11 weeks, scan was 13 weeks. All fine and dandy.

You are being PFB I'm afraid.

My booking in appointments have been at 9 and 10 weeks for my 2 pregnancies so YANBU to expect to have heard from them.

I found in my second pregnancy because I knew what to expect I took control. But I didn't know any better the first time around.

I had my VBAC appointment at 24 weeks but my friend despite chasing and chasing didn't get hers till 38 weeks Shock Antenatal care is very variable so take control of your own care and be on the ball would be my advice.

She's not being PFB! She's was told she would be called 5 weeks ago. She doesn't have an appointment, she is 3 weeks overdue for someone to phone her.

On top of that she collapsed last week so getting into the midwifery system is not unreasonable.

You can self refer to your hospital of choice. There should be a form on their. website.

I don't trust GP's - I self referred as soon as possible.

It is frustrating, definitely chase. If I had left my scan booking so close I wouldn't have got one till way past 12 weeks as they are so busy at my local hospital.

katarzyna I think you are being really unfair. I know it's annoying when appointments are really late but they are short staffed with tiny appointment blocks that people often run over. If you walk away from your appointment because your midwife is running late you are only hurting yourself.

At one of my midwife appointments she was over an hour late. When I finally got to see her it was over lunch and I could hear her stomach rumbling! I knew she wouldn't get a lunch due to my appointment and I tried to be quick so she could eat but she was so thorough and refused to rush.

What an odd reply Hmm. I'm sure the OP wants the usual that most pregnant women want by this time - a booking in appointment (which should be at 8 weeks). In some areas (like mine) you don't get a scan until you've had the booking. It's not like the first appointment is handholding for anxious first-time pregnant ladies - need to get things like family history and bloods done quite quickly (especially first time to know if you're rh- and such). How on earth is that being PFB?

Wtf. I can't believe some of the responses on here. Op you were told it would take two weeks, I would have prodded them as soon as the 2 weeks were up. And you've been seriously unwell. Of course you need to be under Midwife and possibly consultant care. Call NOW and get an appointment for tomorrow at the latest.

I'm sorry you've been forgotten. Don't normally get rattled but responses on here have been ridiculous. Just because in some areas it's standard procedure but your GP specifically said you'd hear within two weeks and with you being unwell you need to sort this asap

chumbler she wasn't seriously ill. It was stress and exhaustion. Many women faint in early pregnancy.

We can only give advice based on our area and our experiences. I had complications in my first pregnancy. Still had to call at 10 weeks to get an appointment.

Can't hurt to call the GP surgery to say midwife hasn't been in touch. I had the standard booking in at 8wks bloods/urine at 10, scan/bloods at 12 and now booked for 20wk scan.

Even if you would still be on track if you started now you'd be sensible to check that they've remembered you. You should feel able to talk to them.

At my hospital (UCLH), you self refer. Is that an option for you?

Just take control and chase them up so you get your scan in time. In all honesty they won't do much or anything for you until your first scan and your booking in app. Then nothing again until close to the halfway point. 'Real' care doesn't kick in until you're closing in on the end of your pregnancy. I'm on no #4 and have become disillusioned with the state of NHS antenatal care these days. Seems to have become progressively worse in the past decade or so.

Ring the GP and remind them. I have had two referrals( for other things ) lost lately. They are so busy things get lost and forgotten. I kept waiting to hear and when I eventually rang they were very apologetic. Just ring and check.

Hi OP.

I'm 9 weeks with my 3rd. Don't worry - you're fine, but I'd phone the surgery to chase if you haven't heard anything by now.

As for me, I'll probably take a leisurely stroll down there at some point ;)

A quick call to check is fine. My GP forgot to forward my info, midwife was furious when I finally saw her at 12 weeks and I was 14+4 when I had a scan.

Booking appointment is important, no idea what is pfb about that.

Where I work we book ladies between 8 and 10 weeks ideally. So I think yanbu to chase them up.

magpie17 · 15/03/2016 14:51

In my area you don't see a GP ever, just get booked in by the MW which you phone to arrange yourself. Can you phone the MW yourself?

FWIW I got booked in at 10 weeks and was scanned at 12, but it depends where you live.

magpie same system I found it strange. in my last gp I saw gp first took in urine sample then saw midwife at 10 weeks.

this surgery you go direct to midwife, they didn't even do urine test to confirm they said my home pregnancy test was enough. I was worried thinking no baby will show at the 12 week scan coz they didn't test me lool

It is probably worth calling - we nearly missed our first scan because someone (midwife or hospital) dropped our paperwork out of the system at some point after first registering the pregnancy and we were too polite to chase it up until there were only a couple of weeks left. We might have started chasing sooner if I had realised that the scan has to be done at one very specific point in pregnancy to be any good for the nuchal fold test and isn't just for 'dating' (I knew exactly when we had conceived so didn't feel much urgency over that) and seeing the baby.
