AIBU to point to the doorbell and tell the delivery driver to use it - that is what it is for

Had a delivery earlier which I had forgotten was coming. I was sitting doing some work when there was hammering on the front door. Jumped out of my skin then got up and went to the door to see delivery driver smiling at me. I pointed to the door bell and asked him to use that instead of trying to knock my door down. He said he often delivers to old people and they don't hear the doorbell. I pointed out to him that I am not that old (more middle aged) and that the doorbell is there for a reason. Hopefully he has got the message as this is a new monthly delivery but tbh he would have given a heart attack to an old person if he'd hammered on their door like he did mine.

AIBU to wish that people would at least try the bell first and then knock 2nd if they don't get an answer (as it is always possible the bell doesn't work, especially if you can't hear it from outside.

Surely doesnt matter what he does you heard and took the parcel. He got paid his pence for delivering it.

Do the posters thinking this is so incredibly rude actually know what it's like? Chances are the OP was still slightly shocked/in fight-or-flight mode during the encounter. When people hammer at my door it gives me quite and shock and makes my heart race (normal knocking is fine). I'm a bit of a gibbering wreck for a couple of minutes after. Some people find sudden loud noises a lot more disturbing than others.

It drives me mad too, though I don't mind if they ring and knock. I can hear the doorbell upstairs, but jot banging. If they phone you to say they are outside (only big deliveries obviously) they say "I pounded on the door, didn't you hear me". Eh- no can you try the doorbell too. Grr!

YANBU. Many houses have doorbells/buzzers that are much louder than someone knocking. Why would anyone have a doorbell they couldn't hear? Confused

BlueMoonRising · 15/03/2016 09:37

A large proportion of doorbells don't work. Knocking always does.

YANBU to prefer the doorbell, and to let him know that. However, you were rude in the way that you communicated your preference. Because of that he will probably keep knocking, or maybe not even bother and just leave a 'while your were out' card.

A bit of courtesy goes a long way.

BlueMoonRising · 15/03/2016 09:38

(When I say knocking always works, I do mean it always creates an audible sound. I don't mean that the person in the house can always hear it)

UterusUterusGhali · 15/03/2016 09:41

I have to visit people's homes for work. About 75% of the doorbells I press don't work.

I do both. (Knock and ring).

I'm a cunt though. Grin

YABU. I was waiting on a delivery on Saturday which never turned up. They turned up yesterday, the driver was cross with us as he had 'rang the bell on Saturday, but no one had answered'. Of course not - the bell does not work (never has), but we have a large knocker that's impossible not to hear, when people bother to use it. I'd much rather a deliery person knock to be sure than use a bell that may or may not work.

Minisoksmakehardwork · 15/03/2016 10:00

And if you've a doorbell which doesn't work, either fix it or remove it. Otherwise you are contributing to the problem of delivery people who don't get an answer when they ring a broken doorbell.

RockUnit · 15/03/2016 10:05

I can't always hear a knock at the door, but can always hear the bell from anywhere in the house.

BlueMoonRising · 15/03/2016 10:19

Mini - it's not always the person living at the house that has the authority to fix/remove the doorbell. That would only apply to homeowners - not tenants.

I have the world's loudest doorbell, the door also has a knocker, I appear to have several posties, two of whom ring the bell, smile and handover the goods. the other two ring the bell and hammer on the door too, not even using the knocker, just hammer the door. I get Angry.
