I am more than positive ds1 has a virus, he is aching all over and cant walk or barely talk as when he does he goes all dizzy and his eyes wobble... We have given his Calpol and Ibuprofen and his temp is still 41.8, his temp originally was 42.4 a hour ago.

should we wait it out or consider taking him?

really

Topseyt · 12/03/2016 09:56

Better safe than sorry. Hope you have got to A & E by now, and that he is better soon.

MissBeaHaving · 12/03/2016 11:14

How is he MsJamie?

ScarlettDarling · 12/03/2016 20:37

Hope your son is feeling lots better now?

Pancakeflipper · 12/03/2016 20:39

Hope things are ok (A&E is deffo the place to be with a temp that high) and your little one is improving.

Sothisishowitfeels · 12/03/2016 20:41

Agree a and e that's an extremely high temp. My dd was kept in with a temp of 39

Mango5000 · 12/03/2016 20:44

Hope your ds is ok op? Flowers
Def a job for hospital & glad you were getting him there. Fevers petrify me since dd had viral meningitis

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 12/03/2016 20:47

they don't really care about high temps these days, the criteria is how well the child is in themselves.

if they're lethargic, sleepy or really generally unwell/not themselves, not eating/drinking then they need to be seen.

my dd was spiking a 104 degree temp last month but because she was drinking and other than that was generally 'ok' they refused to see her when i phoned the OOH.

Haggisfish · 12/03/2016 20:48

We went to a and e with similar temp last week. Kept in for obs but ds was ok.

Haggisfish · 12/03/2016 20:49

Hope your ds is also on the road to recovery.

countingdown · 12/03/2016 20:50

Hope his temperature has dropped and he's feeling a lot better.

queenoftheworld93 · 12/03/2016 20:52

adrift that isn't correct, high temps can cause fitting in children which can be very dangerous

Hope everything is ok

Ilovenannyplum · 12/03/2016 20:53

Another one here hoping your DS is feeling better OP

PointlessUsername · 12/03/2016 20:54

Hope he feels better soon.

Jitterybug · 12/03/2016 20:56

We were always told to be seen if temp was around the 40 mark. Hope all is ok op.

Octonought · 12/03/2016 21:02

Adrift is right, the number is not the most important thing. Kids can fit (febrile convulsion) with any level of fever, and there is some evidence to show that the fitting is caused by a sudden change rather than a high temperature in itself.

Febrile convulsions are scary but virtually always harmless and uncommon above the age of 5.

No need to give calpol/ibuprofen just because they have a fever, but a kind thing to do if they are feeling miserable.

Mistigri · 12/03/2016 21:38

Am I the only one who thinks that fear of burdening the NHS has gone a bit far, when a parent whose child who has a fever of 42C and can't walk and talk is asking whether she should go to A&E?

OP hope your son has been seen and he is OK!

WoTmania · 12/03/2016 21:44

With a temp that high and not coming down with analgesics it's not being over protective to go to A&E. Hope your DS is ok.

MsJamieFraser · 12/03/2016 21:56

sorry for the late reply and Thank you for all the advice, flowers to you all

Ds is Ok, they kept him in for a few hours just to observe him really, and they think its a flu type bug or a viral bug, blood test ruled out everything sinister out, he's home now and we just have to keep giving him plenty of fluid and meds to keep his temp down... although he's now starting by the looks of things getting an upset tummy...

ds2 is also looking to be ill, he's complained of a headache most of the afternoon according to GP and he fell asleep at 7pm... hes also got a temp of 38.9, so we are riding the storm tonight with him, as he has a compromised immune system...

fun times ahead tonight by the looks of things

we are not long home so I have sent dh to get a takeaway, and some cans of ginger, as the wine is now on the back burner for another night.

and I say a "few" hours only just noticed a few meant 10 hours Hmm

pippistrelle · 12/03/2016 22:00

Glad to hear all is well. Or at least, not sinister. Hope they're both back on form soon.

Mistigri · 12/03/2016 22:11

OP, with my DS, high temp + puking always means a strep infection ... There have been a lot of cases of scarlet fever (which is caused by the strep bacteria) in the UK this winter, so go back to the doctor if there is any rash or other concerning symptoms. My DS was hospitalised for a week with SF as a baby.

Hope your night isn't too bad.

Mango5000 · 12/03/2016 22:13

Oh what a time! Really feel for you op. Glad it was nothing sinister but stressful all the same. Hope your DC pick up quickly & you & your dh manage to avoid it Flowers

MsJamieFraser · 15/03/2016 03:27

I hope all your little ones are OK, it's still a poorly household, ds too have slept for 3 days straight (been awake for a few hours either in his bed or in our bed with no energy) and tonight he now has D&V.

I'm not feeling 100% myself, have a very sickly tummy, and a bit achy.

Ds1 is better, he could realistically went to school yesterday, however we kept him off for a further 24 hours as he still wasn't himself, he's still not 100% as he's very tearful started crying yesterday as he was hungry... But then ate just a few but each of his dinner... Saying he was full, so we are trying to give him little and often wholesome foods.

I also have to cancel a hospital appt, with the gyncologists today, I had to cancel it 3 months ago as ds2 was ill then... Looks like it will be another 3 months to get another appt.
