I need to clear my debts. I just paid the last of my catalogue debt off and so tempted to splurge out and order stuff.

It a want not a need. MN please be harsh.

This will save £60 a month in which next week will be able to clear store cards.

Wow you are doing amazingly well - what willpower! Wish I could bottle some of it for myself. Hang in there.

BirthdayBetty · 10/03/2016 20:15

You've done brilliantly so far. Come on op you can do it!

Whatdoidohelp · 10/03/2016 20:18

Your doing fantastically well! Write is down. A table showing debt name, what it was and what it is now. Seeing it in black and white will justify what you are doing. Keep at it!

tealoveryum · 10/03/2016 20:20

Burn the catalogue, buy marshmallows and do a happy fire dance.

GooseberryRoolz · 10/03/2016 20:22

Close the account. Now. Do it while we wait Smile

EveOnline2016 · 10/03/2016 20:30

Wish I could but the account still shows money owing until next statement.

Then I will cancel

Well done for paying off your shopping debt and stopping smoking. Two difficult habits to break.

Be strong. Go for a walk whenever you have the urge to shop or smoke. You'll feel so much better for it!

IWasHereBeforeTheHack · 10/03/2016 20:30

You are such an inspiration, clearing so much debt already!

Walk tall - and away from temptation.

You CAN do it.
You WILL do it.

Find something free to take up your time instead: reading (library), walking, running on the spot in the house?

Keep asking MN for help if you need it. MN has an endless supply of grips.

BunnyTyler · 10/03/2016 20:32

You've done amazingly already, don't make it all for nothing.

You've past the hardest point, keep pushing - you're nearly there!

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 10/03/2016 20:36

WOW Flowers you are doing well.

16 months now is the blink of an eye and you can do this. It'll feel amazing.

I was brought up that if I didn't have the money to shop, then I had to save until I did have. So because of that, when it comes to non absolute essentials that's how I've gone on. That £50 bargain isn't a bargain at all unless you pay for it without interest. Every time you want to spend something, think about the weighing scales and the real cost, it's a good way to keep focussed.

She's right. It's an amazing double whammy Smile

Shakey15000 · 10/03/2016 20:40

You know that sick to your stomach feeling you had when you realised you'd added to your debt by buying crap you don't really need? Remember that when you feel tempted. Smile Well done!

EveOnline2016 · 10/03/2016 20:42

Thing is I have no clothes. It was all stuff for DC.

I have 3-4 outfits that I have had for years.

I don't treat myself, can't remember the last time I had a haircut or bought new makeup etc.

TopHat33 · 10/03/2016 20:44

God you've done well. Well done.

Now get a bloody grip and keep on doing well Grin

GooseberryRoolz · 10/03/2016 20:48

You need a budget for small treats for yourself, or at least clothes even if it's only £10 per week until you're debt free.

GooseberryRoolz · 10/03/2016 20:50

If the catalogue payment was £60pcm, why not award yourself half of that as a clothes budget? Make your new addiction ebay and charity shop hunting?

It's the same principle as weightloss I think; If you go TOO austere, you're more likely to fall off the wagon.

WanderingNotLost · 10/03/2016 20:52

People still buy stuff from catalogues?! misses point entirely

Whirlydervish · 10/03/2016 20:54

Wandering, that was my first thought too Grin

memyselfandaye · 10/03/2016 20:54

Amazon isn't too bad for reasonably priced clothes, but only if you use your debit card not the credit card, and you have the spare funds.

You are doing so well, don't spoil it now.

I have also stopped smoking btw, 2 weeks and Im already better off by £30 a week.

greathat · 10/03/2016 21:00

Money saving expert mantras

If you're skint
Do I need it?
Can I afford it?
Have I checked if its cheaper elsewhere?

If you're not skint
Will I use it?
Is it worth it?
Have I checked if its cheaper elsewhere?

ThatWasThat · 10/03/2016 21:01

You are an inspiration, don't falter now.

LuluJakey1 · 10/03/2016 21:02

Being debt free is a great feeling. DH and I have no debt at all- nothing. I love it and don't intend to have any ever again. It is freedom.

Ohdearohdearme · 10/03/2016 21:07

What stopped me shopping was not only debt worry, but realising how much room all the unnecessary clothes I'd bought was taking up. I sorted through everything (took me weeks) and identified well over 100 items that could be sold on ebay to help get the debt down and create more space. My god, the amount of time it took to iron, photograph, measure, describe, list, pack and post the clothes ... I made myself a rule of one item in one item out, so every time I'm tempted to buy something new I think what a rigmarole it was getting rid of stuff!

EveOnline2016 · 10/03/2016 21:23

When I'm debt free I will treat myself. I owe money so that comes first.

I'm more than happy with a tub of Iceland 3 flavours ice cream ( cant spell the word)

AdoraBell · 10/03/2016 21:24

You can do it, you've done fantastically so far.

And I will be watching you
