To pay more than asked?

I am going to get my very small back garden tidied, getting rid of leaves and weeds so it is ready for planting.

Its not a big job but the digging required is too much for me and DH. I had a heart attack at 32 last year and DH has a broken leg.

I have had two quotes 1 for £300 and one for £20 total. The person who quoted just £20 came this morning to see the garden. I thought he ment £20 an hour which is reasonable, but no he ment £20 total. I double checked the price as his English wasn't very good (he was Polish).

I will be using the person from this morning as he was on time and seemed like a nice man but feel bad about just giving him £20 for what will be a few hours digging. I thought I would double it to £40 at least ( I had budgeted £100). I have mentioned the quotes to people at work who all think I should just pay £20 as the man asked. This seems a bit stingy to me.

Aibu to pay him more than asked? Do you think he would be offended?

I would think £10p/h is a reasonable rate as others have said.
Once he has finished maybe explain to him that £20 is far too little and you don't feel comfortable underpaying someone - just so he understands why you're giving him more.

Just saw your decision this seems very fair :)

I'd love it if you lot were in charge of nurses' pay. Working in ICU, £11 PH.

TrixieBlue2016 · 10/03/2016 19:52

lougle I was in ICU for 6 days last April. I would pay each and every one of you more than what 'call me Dave' Cameron makes Grin even then we would be getting you cheap.

Ahh thanks, Trixie. I hope you're not too scarred by your experience. It's not a nice place to be.

PegsPigs · 10/03/2016 21:40

I know this sounds odd but if there's 2 of them I'd make sure whatever you pay them and the denominations are equally divisible by 2. So not £45 but £40 - 2 × £20 or £50 - 2 × £20, 2 × £5

You sound lovely OP. Hope there's plenty of biccies too Smile

Errr you would be very unreasonable to pay £20 for several hours work. Of course you must pay a living wage. It's not a 'good deed' it's the right thing.

mrsjskelton · 10/03/2016 21:47

I'd definitely pay him more! I think a lot of polish labourers under value themselves in order to get what scraps of work they can.

MrsFogi · 10/03/2016 21:52

TrixieBlue if he does a good job and would be interested in work in SE London could you CAT me his contacts? I have a disaster going on in my garden!

razmataz · 11/03/2016 06:45

Not to be nitpicky, but if you were paying each man £15 per hour plus £15 then it would be £75 overall. You're paying £7.50 per hour per man, plus £15.

But that's still over minimum wage and more than asked for so perfectly fair :)

leelu66 · 11/03/2016 07:12

Razmataz, I think OP is planning to pay each man £45, so £90 in total.
