as there is for people who are transgender/gay/lesbian/whatever?

It seems to me that the bandwagon of support for the LBGT community is a popular one to jump on at the moment whereas people with mental illness are still seen as a taboo subject.

The LGBT panellists all had MH issues and said that they saw a lot of parallels but (personally) had found it much harder to come out as having a mental illness than being gay.

Yes, and this is why I think it's a valid comparison even if it was clumsily offered.

I think you might find this article interesting. The author stands up and says it's time to own our mental health, to talk about it as we talk about physical health.

That said, there's still plenty of taboo surrounding certain physical conditions as well. I think we're decades off proper social acceptance of MH conditions, because we're years if not decades off accepting physical conditions objectively.

I don't know why you picked these particular issues to compare. It's like threads comparing mental health to cancer. It just doesn't make sense.

at our school we are discussing it because these issues (including sexual assault) are affecting pupils.

As a bisexual woman with mh issues this is a strange opinion to me. Do you think people can't be supportive of more than one cause?

As for you basing it on your own fb feed that's made up of the opinions of your friends and pages you choose to follow, there are lots of mh support pages. My news feed is made up of mh support, lgbt support, politics, animal welfare stuff, environmental issues all in roughly equal balance. There are charities and organisations that support the mentally ill and you have a voice too op.
