Aibu to think it's a not very hygienic?

I've seen it a few times recently. DP says it's because it's supposedly more hygienic than a bin....

what I see here is tiny little bins (with lids) that are kept on the countertop for compost matter (teabags, coffee grounds, veg clippings etc.)
the bins are small I gather so you take them out often.

TrueBlu · 04/03/2016 07:13

I still don't get it, if people don't like bins in kitchens why put an open one on your work surface Confused

I'd rather get a smaller lidded one which was out the way and could get emptied daily.

Yeah I sometimes do that. What's unhygienic about a few bit of food packaging in a bag? It's not raw bloody sewage!

bornwithaplasticspoon · 04/03/2016 07:32

We have one of these. Takes up no space and is small so is emptied once or twice daily.

Theres nothing more unsightly than a supermarket carrier hanging off a kitchen door handle.

Im always cleaning my (lidded) bin. Theres nothing unhygienic with my kitchen, or my two loo brushes Smile

Gowgirl · 04/03/2016 07:58

Our kitchen bin is the bane of my life, I'm a carrier bag person
1 I'm the only person who ever empties it
2 I'm the only person who can see its full, everyone else just crams more in
3 I hate the jiggly dance with the bin between knees trying to pull the bag out.... Or liner out and upended into second bin bag.....or it splits due to crammed in waste and spills over the kitchen floor!

Maybe I'll just put the bin in the binGrin

Bag on bench here. Ridiculously tiny kitchen, so no room for a bin in a cupboard, and also very large Labrador who is a stealth bin diver.

It has its own corner away from any food prep spaces, and is also emptied a couple of times a day - sometimes more.

I'd prefer a proper bin, and we do actually have a decent brabantia one that is in the basement, but it was almost too big so got stinky. Was much grosser having that in the kitchen rather than the constantly changed out plastic bags.

FigMango1 · 04/03/2016 08:44

cant stand carrier bags on door handles instead of a bin

Same here Rude. It looks so dirty and untidy.

fourquenelles · 04/03/2016 08:51

Big wheelie bin liner in my wheelie bin just outside my kitchen door. All non recyclable waste goes straight into it. No composting (rat problem when we did) and no food waste collection here (yet). All recyclables on the side by the kitchen door and put into that bin a couple of times a day. Therefore no bin in the kitchen. I do have two big, cupboard opening dogs though who also happen to love carrot peelings and cabbage stalks so the veg waste is not as much as it could be.

slebmum1 · 04/03/2016 09:10

I have a plastic bag hanging of kitchen door handle for when I'm cooking to put the peelings and stuff in. Goes straight the in the bin. More hygienic IMO.

LogicalThinking · 04/03/2016 09:38

I don't do bin liners or plastic bags.
I do have recycling boxes, one without a lid on the kitchen worktop. It gets emptied every day and we recycle so much more since doing that. The kitchen food caddy gets emptied every day too.

Notso · 04/03/2016 09:55

Carrier bags of crap lying around or hanging off door handles are unsightly and annoying.
The kitchen bin is annoying too but not unsightly.
