To provide 3 years worth of bank statements for a job application?

It's for a part time admin job with the NHS.

I applied through a recruitment agency but because I have been a stay at home mum for over 3 years I have to provide 3 years worth of bank statements.

1. I don't want to give out that kind of personal info
2. It would cost me £30 plus yo get copies of the statements

AIBU?

Well it sounds a bit odd to me, what's their justification for asking for that? All I've ever been asked for is the names of 2 referees and proof of my right to work here in the uk

Sounds like nonsense to me. I would question the reasonong for this. And being a SAHM is not a reason.

Is it a private recruitment agency? Have you actually met anyone from the NHS yet?

Brook Street employment agency. They said they would block out all personal details

I have a job where I am credit checked and crb'd each year and I've never been asked for more than one months, they can ask your bank for a reference to show you're credit worthy/managing money

Strange. I work for the nhs via an agency at the moment and know i didnt have to provide that. Have you tried the nhs jobs website and go direct or try another agency.

Quite possibly some sort of scam/intention to defraud. Speak to somoene more senior at the agency to understand what is going on.

YANBU I'd be cautious and ask why they require this evidence as can't possibly see how this impacts on your ability to do the job.

I've had to supply refs for time out of work which is usually the case of badgering a friend and one bank I worked for wouldn't accept my tenancy agreement arms proof of address so I had to give a bank statement but not 3 years worth, that is excessive.

I know someone who works 'with money' and had to provide bank statements and credit check along with crb, to prove they werent gonna run off with it all! But nhs?

I had to do this but I was employed, so they contacted my employer and they declared I had worked there between X and X but the alternative was bank statements for those not working.

Still don't think it's right though but I had an alternative X

Under the Data Protection Act they need to be able to explain what they're going to use the information for, who it is going to be shared with, how it will be stored and how long for. They are not allowed to request or hold irrelevant information and even relevant info should only be retained for the prescribed period.

They absolutely don't need this. A simple credit check will suffice. I do interim contracts in the NHS at a senior level and this is all the agency has ever done on the financial side.

I work for a large financial institution and we would require bank statements to confirm you haven't been working. However importantly this would only be at the employee screening stage once you'd been offered the job, not at the application stage.

I've just emailed NHS & Brook Street for an explanation.
