I am at the very start of a career, been in the job about a year. It's hard to get into, requires a degree and professional registration which I've not yet got.

However I'm also 9 months into my 12 month maternity leave.

Me and my line manager couldn't see eye to eye on agreeing part time hours at first but the head of department has now agreed for me to work 6 hours a day for 4 days, with a 30 min lunch break in the middle. My mum is going to have the baby for me. She lives 15 mins from me, about 20 mins from my work. She is disabled and can't work herself but offered very kindly to have the baby for me while I work these part time hours.

I've been worrying that she's not up to having the baby for 7-7.5 hours 4 days a week. She's having a lot of pain with her illness and is in A and E today as she requires urgent help today. I feel it's going to be too much for her and I don't know what to do.

financially me and dh can manage without my wage but only just. The main worry is that I haven't done my professional registration. It's all ready to be assessed but my line manager refused to have it assessed while I was pregnant (he's a horrendous sexist). I asked the dept head and he said that we can have it done by 6 weeks from my return to work.

I am in turmoil. My poor mum insists she'll be ok with DS but I'm not convinced. My dh says it'll be ok either way but I'm worried we could struggle financially.

Aibu to ask your advice on the matter? Shall I give my job up? Shall I get registered than hand in my notice? Shall I just carry on?

i would stick it out until you've got your professional registration.

that way it gives your mom a trial with looking after baby, and you have your registration. You can always reassess the situation after then.

Would that work?

That would definitely work. I just need to PUSH my manager when I get back. That'd be the best so I can go back to it in a few years if I am able.

Would you be able to stretch to a cm or nursery short term with dm perhaps doing one day to start with to see how it goes. That way you could get your registration and she can still feel she is useful.

Can you look into childcare for 2 days a week and see if your mum could manage looking after the baby 2 days?

It would be a shame to not get your professional registration, also by returning to work you can start to build up a buffer of savings.

I should've said in my OP sorry. There's no chance of paid childcare unfortunately.

I would suggest having a home help/child care person go and be with your Mum and Baby - she will feel like she is contributing, help can be for both, no need for prof CM/Nanny as its a helper not a FT full responsibility carer
