Do any babies really sleep through at 6-8 weeks?

Aibu to kind of not believe that babies sleep through the night so early? Ok of course I believe it, but how on earth?

My first slept through, I mean properly 7-7 at 6 months old. I'd have thought that was quite good and lucky. My second still doesn't sleep through at 8 months, although he dropped night feeds at 6 months, he wakes lots for comfort though.

Loads of people I know and posters on here say that their babies slept through much earlier, by say 3 months, some as early as 6 weeks!

Mil tells me my dh was a 'terrible sleeper', but in his baby record book it says he first sleep through at 2 months old, how can that be terrible?

What I'm wondering is, when people say slept through, do they mean something else, such as going straight back to sleep after night feeds, or do they mean with a dream feed at midnight? When I imagine sleeping through I think of once they will fairly reliably do 7,8,9pm-6-7am, without any night feeds.

If yours did what is your secret?

Only magical unicorn babies sleep perfectly from such an early age.

DS1 was a magical unicorn baby and would have a little feed at 11/12 and not bother waking for another til 6am. Perfection, we both got enough sleep, I breastfed for a year, everyone was happy.

DS2 was Satan's own child and began sleeping through at around 4 years old. It was like I was being punished for a crime I didn't even know I'd committed. Frankly, I spent 4 years wondering if God hated me. Now I know he does because even though he's just turned 5, DS2 is still a shite sleeper and if a pigeon farts 3 miles away he'll hear it and come crashing into our room shouting "listen, I heard something, can I have a biscuit, shall we play eye spy, what's your favourite ninja in ninjago, I can hear a cat meowing, shall we wake the dog up and chase her, I want some milk, my bottom itches, do you think it's morning yet..." and on and on and on. Forever.

You can never rely on anything when it comes to children. There's no rhyme or reason for grand sleepers versus ones like our DS2. You get what you get, you buy yourself some touche éclat and you smile whilst swallowing down the hate-fire when your MIL declares "you look tired". Well I will do since your demonic grandson has spent four years refusing to sleep, fucker.

I used to think mothers were liars when they said thier babies slept through from 6 weeks, my first (now 3.5) never bloody slept! Woke at 2am and 5am for 2.5 years and still wakes up at silly o'clock (5.30-6am)!!!
However my second who is now just six months went from 7-8 from 9 weeks! I am still in shock and thank my lucky stars EVERY DAY!!!!
I don't tell any new mum this in RL as I know from bitter experience how soul distroying it is to hear when you have a bad sleeper Smile

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 29/02/2016 20:23

I have seen some people define slept through as midnight to 6am.

Personally I consider sleeping through to mean consistently going at least 10hrs, but more like 12+hrs.

DS was going a minimum of 6hrs by 6weeks and would settle down fast after a quick feed. He started consistently sleeping through at 8weeks (10-12hrs) and was going 12-14hrs by 9weeks. Although he was a nightmare velcro-baby in the day time.

DD went 10hrs consistently before 6weeks and was doing 12-14hrs consistently from 8weeks. She was also fabulous with day naps too. In fact she is the easiest baby I know - my mom says that means she'll be the worst possible teenager!

TimeToMuskUp · 29/02/2016 20:28

Finally I always thought slept through was the parents getting enough sleep to survive the day without resorting to Red Bull or Gin at 4pm. I have friends whose DCs slept 10-12 hours a night from fairly early on, but I'm a weird one and only need 5/6 hours a night even now, so it always felt to me as though DS1 slept through the night because he kind of did, on my routine.

Storminateapot · 29/02/2016 20:30

My daughter did at 7 weeks - she slept 7 - 6 with a dream feed at 10, settling straight down.

I don't know how or why, she was my first, think I was just lucky. And unbearably smug. Grin

Her younger twin brothers were an entirely different story. Nightmare!!

bunnygirl80 · 29/02/2016 20:32

Dd slept 7-7, no wake ups, no feeds from 8wks. She was ebf.

Her older brother woke at least 3 times a night until 6 months, and wasn't a reliable sleeper until he was 3. We were still getting up to him in the night when 8wk old dd was happily sleeping through!

Drained12345 · 29/02/2016 20:34

Ds1 formula fed and slept 10-7 at 8 wks, Ds2 was breastfed and didn't sleep right through until about 1 year, Ds3 formula fed and slept 10-6/7 at 9 wks

starsinyourpies · 29/02/2016 20:38

Mine did, breastfed at 7, slept until 7. Think it lasted a couple of months then it all went wrong when teeth came thick and fast...

OliviaDunham · 29/02/2016 20:38

All 3 of mine did 10-7 from about 3 weeks, FF and all 8lb+ born.

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/02/2016 20:39

Mine did from about 16 weeks, 8pm-6am

Now she's 8 months old it's 7pm-6/8am. But we do have the odd night where she wakes because of teething.

MrsTomFord · 29/02/2016 20:39

Yes, both DCs, 7pm to 7am. According to the maternity nurses I've had, when babies get to 12 pounds they should be able to eat enough during the day not to need to eat at night. That, and routine.

FreeButtonBee · 29/02/2016 20:39

Twins - BF - about 15 months for a night when both of them slept through. I was on my knees for about 10 months.

Ds2 - nearly 7 months and he will do 7-12 fairly regularly but the second half of the night is pretty chancey. And he's fond of a 5.50am rise and shine. But he's already crawling, and just got a tooth so I'm cutting him some slack for a couple of weeks. Then once solids are a bit more established, will wind down the night feeds in the hope he goes longer in the day 😒

HelenF35 · 29/02/2016 20:41

Pyjama hoovering the landing is the perfect revenge. Make sure you bang the door with the Hoover on the way past! My mum used to do this to me when I was in my late teens, especially if I'd been to the pub. Torture! GrinGrin

CountryRoadTakeMeHome · 29/02/2016 20:44

DD was sleeping through from 8 til 8 at 4 weeks. My DS was 16 months at this stage and was still waking several times a night. He finally managed it at 20 months.

I did nothing different but DS tossed and turned and hit his head against the sides of the cot. As soon as he went into a single bed he was fine.

Both slept brilliantly from there on in 😃

Dellarobia · 29/02/2016 20:45

DD slept through at 8 weeks, 7-7 without feeding or waking, EBF.

Her 2 brothers did not.

FinallyFreeFromItAll · 29/02/2016 20:47

TimeToMuskUp - you only need 5-6hrs a night?!? Until very recently I needed a full 8.5-9.5hrs sleep a night!!! Now I can just about manage on 7.5hrs.

Rinceoir · 29/02/2016 20:47

My EBF DD slept from 11pm-8am at 8 weeks. Every night until she was 6 months. From 6-8.5months she woke hourly! Then went back to one wake a night until around 18 months when she started sleeping 8-8.

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/02/2016 20:51

Time I anticipate a non-sleeping second, should I ever have one.

My next door neighbours wish it on us, they say so in a jovial tone but they're being quite serious Blush

sandylion · 29/02/2016 20:55

First on (DD) built up to it more gradually but slept 7-7 from about 4 or 5 months. Second (DS) From 8 weeks slept from 8/9 to 7am or later. Then at 12 weeks he became an asshole about going to sleep. He's better now though at 7 months as I tried all the gentle parenting methods from about 5 months and they were failing. My own slightly watered down version of controlled crying worked (and I said I would NEVER use CC.) Wouldn't have tried it any younger than 6 months though.

Juanbablo · 29/02/2016 21:02

Ds1 started sleeping through at 3 months old but it didn't last long and he had several periods of absolutely dire sleeping. He's ok now he is 8 but wasn't reliable until he was at least 6.

Dd was 6 months and is still a fabulous sleeper.

DS2 was around 12 months but not reliable until 18months and is mostly very good now.

BertieBotts · 29/02/2016 21:07

Yes DS did. A good 7-8 hours. I was co sleeping and breastfeeding. At 4 months he regressed and didn't sleep that well again until he was about 18 months old! 12 hours was 2.5ish.

Alis I wouldn't wish that madness on anyone, not a single soul deserves night after night of the utter insanity of whispering "but you just woke an hour ago" and crying into the steering wheel on the school run because you forgot to put on matching shoes because your second Kraken ruined everything. I'm joking, because he's lovely and I wouldn't be without him. I just can't wait til he buggers off to Borstal/Hogwarts and I get to become a normal human again.

Finally my whole family are like this; my Dad is 78 and only sleeps 5 hours a night, most, and is strong as an ox. It's a strange thing and even DS1 is showing signs of needing less and less sleep to survive. I can easily skip about all day after 5 hours sleep, but it has to be completely unbroken blissful sleep, or I'm like Hades all day, setting fire to people and muttering "what the fucking fuck".
