To ask about Ashby de la Zouch?

Posting here for traffic as i noticed a few Ashby folk on the 'sneering' journo thread. Dh's job is relocating to the East Mids and because of the motorway network Ashby de la Zouch looks like a good option. So, one damp Sunday we went to have a look round. I feel umcertain about it and have a few questions, but would welcome any observations from people in the know.

Are the schools as good as they sound, are there any to be avoided or any parts of town to avoid?

Is the nearest a&e department in Burton?

Is the nearest train station Burton and what is the transport like for getting out of Ashby de la Zouch?

Is there a park with swings etc for children within the town - i cant seem to find one?

Is there much going on for children? Would teenagers be bored?

Are there paths that you can walk on out of town to open countryside?

Would you recommend living there?

TIA

Hi. There have been some excellent suggestions. I'm in Wollaton and love it here, I've grown up here went away for a few years and come back here to raise my family. The school (Fernwood) primary and comprehensive is excellent. Very sought after school. Unfortunately we are now catching up with west bridgford prices for housing but it is a lovely place to live. Some lovely pubs and restaurants, Wollaton park on the doorstep which is a great place to walk to with the kids and feed the ducks etc..., lovely little lane of shops which includes a birds and the cheesecake shop! (What more could you ask for! Lol) and we now have a waitrose supermarket.
It has a lovely community feel all in all and is close to the m1.

I am also familiar with out towards ashby as my partners dd lives with her mum in castle donington. Which is also an OK little village but the schools are not great and I hear it's quite gossipy so you know go to toilet and everyone knows about it kind of place.

I wouldn't fancy the commute from ashby to Nottingham my dp often drops his dd at school in castle donington on a Monday am and picks up on a fri pm and the traffic is a nightmare at times. But then while the tram works were happening in Nottingham it was just as bad so swings and roundabouts. There is traffic wherever you go now!

Definitely do your research. Chillwell is good value if you can get around toton and feed into George spencer which is an excellent school but I would steer clear of alderman white as it has had a pretty bad reputation for bullying. Beeston is fine and has all the shops etc.. But it has more of a student feel to it now. It takes us literally 10 mins to get into Beeston from Wollaton and there are bus routes there as well.

Good luck finding somewhere that suits your family :-) x

Ill look at those villages Bogey thanks.

Thanks also Angel i really liked the sound of Wollaton, but kind of ruled it out because Fernwood looked like the only good primary in the area and if it was full in my Dcs years then the next closest schools looked pretty awful (according to Ofsted anyway, not always a great barometre i know!)

Dh liked Beeston high street, but i supplied him with a list of houses in the area that we could afford and he didnt like the streets, no front gardens, not much greenery ( we're in quite a leafy suburb at the moment) he felt it was possibly too urban?

What price range are you looking for and how many bedrooms? I love a good rightmove search!! And I can tell you what in your range is good area / bad area!!

Bogeyface · 01/03/2016 19:10

Me too Oooblimey :o

Jibberjabberjooo · 01/03/2016 19:10

Houses in Beeston itself won't have front gardens and a lot of terraces. Look further out to Chilwell and Toton. Attenborough isn't urban at all, especially over the railway line. And the nature reserve is at the back of the houses, it's a lovely walk.

Jibberjabberjooo · 01/03/2016 19:11

I love a good search too, I think a challenge is on Ooo Wink

Bogeyface · 01/03/2016 19:15

We need to divide it up by area though! I can do Burton and surrounding areas.

RaisingSteam · 01/03/2016 19:21

Better start practising your Ey oop m'duck at this rate

Badders123 · 01/03/2016 19:25

Ahem.
It's "ay up me duck" actually :)
I know a lot of these areas as I've either lived or worked there.
Avoid ling eaton like the plague 😖
Beeston isn't great.
Ditto Sandiacre.
But only a few miles makes a world of difference.
People seem to love breaston, no idea why. Risley is classed as quite posh, again, no idea why.
I've always liked Stanton by Dale which is just past Risley.
Re schools...do look round and don't be swayed by ofsted!

RaisingSteam · 01/03/2016 19:30

I know how to say it I just couldn't writeit down!

kissmybumandsaychumchum · 01/03/2016 19:33

Just coming on to wave to fellow Tammies:) Love Ashby for occasional shopping but grew up in Lichfield and now living in Tamworth. All children had no problems with Tamworth schools but youngest now attending 6th form in Lichfield as local 6th form provision is dire. It's a great base, I travel a lot for work and being central is perfect.

This is rather nice. Good for the tram too.

Ooo further back OP said they were looking at £250-275. Is that right OP? How many bedrooms and style of house. Grin

Didiusfalco · 01/03/2016 20:11

Yes that's right Jibber couldn't really go above £275k. Sent Dh to Attenborough too. He said he saw geese, a level crossing and a Next outlet??!

Will be Google mapping all those villages Badders

Thanks all.

Jibberjabberjooo · 01/03/2016 20:19

Grin at your DH. Yes there is a Next outlet, and a TK maxx and a Halfords, but at the retail park! I take it he didn't drive along the back roads where the actual houses are?

The geese I presume were at the nature reserve. The level crossing would be for the train line into Nottingham. Attenborough has a tiny station. If you live in Attenborough village then you don't have to drive to the nature reserve where Next is to get to it as you can walk. The village is very quiet and lovely. He should have visited the Vic in Beeston, amazing pub.

I can't say the retail park is a good representation of that part of Nottingham. It's busy and not where the houses are. Although useful!

Grin
Didiusfalco · 01/03/2016 20:36

Oh thanks Jibber as he though Beeston was a bit too urban it sounds like Attenborough would be a better bet!

That figures - I went to school in Long Eaton, and I still know quite a few folk who live there

Badders123 · 01/03/2016 21:04

The best thing I can say about long Eaton is that ilkeston is worse 😉

wasonthelist · 01/03/2016 21:09

Goes without saying Illson is like Beriut

Badders123 · 01/03/2016 21:11

Yep. Rough as a Badgers arsehole 😁

Jibberjabberjooo · 01/03/2016 21:40

I drive through Ilkeston, once.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 01/03/2016 22:25

If I was moving to that part of the country I'd be looking at Quorn. My brother lives there and I totally love the place. Close enough to Loughborough and Leicester for city stuff but with a lovely village feel. Lots of nice pubs and restaurants and a gorgeous park.

I'd move there like a shot but couldn't afford it.

Didiusfalco · 01/03/2016 22:50

Quorn you say?

That house is lovely btw Jibber

Bogeyface · 01/03/2016 23:03

Oh yes, Ilkeston is appalling, dont drive slower than 10mph if you want to keep your wheels Wink
