I always think I need to be a lot more organised and reconcile them against my bank statement but I know how to procrastinate In reality, I don't actually end up doing anything but collecting piles of them. I once got ripped off by a big restaurant chain where they charged £60 on my bank statement more than my debit card receipt (and the cost of the meal). The restaurant would not pay up and nor did the bank. I left it on the end- something I would not do now!
Anyway the above makes me wonder if others are diligent in going through their receipts and bank statements.

It's a very small drawer too.

I keep all my receipts for one year. Cash receipts are kept in an envelope labelled with each month and credit card receipts are kept in a polypocket until I get the statement when I check them off against the statement. They are then filed in a polypocket labelled with the month. Each month I chuck out the receipts for that month from the previous year.

I check every receipt and payment that goes in and out of my bank account and reconcile the monthly statement with my records each month

I keep spreadsheets of all my spending with individual sheets for cash, bank and credit cards and reconcile them each month. I know exactly to the penny how much money should be in my purse.

I check on-line banking and my credit card account balances at least twice a week. I once had some fraudulent payments on my credit card due to having details on an online shopping account which fortunately the company picked up within 24 hours. This has made me very cautious.

One reason for keeping cash receipts is because one of my friends put in a claim to her insurance company for wasted food when her freezer failed and the insurers asked for receipts for all the food that had been wasted. She was not able to provide them and they refused the claim.

I'm shocked at those who don't get receipts at all or rarely check their balance/statement! I can only assume you're fairly well off.

I'm on a tight budget and rarely use my debit card except for large purchases which its useful to have a record on my bank account for (usually winter festival things). Also because I ended up almost £50 out of pocket in bank charges when my supermarket (only one where I live) didn't request payment for 3 WEEKS once and messed me up! I have a strict budget and only withdraw what I have budgeted to spend.

"Are peopl keeping every single receipt? So even ones for a pint of milk and some bread for example? "

No, only debit card receipts, and only until I check them against the bank statement. I wouldn't use a debit card just for a pint of milk or a loaf of bread anyway.

Thanks Bunbaker So after a monthly check against a bank statement, they can all be bummed I guess. Apart from big items.

Condorwoman · 26/02/2016 00:57
