Advice re prescription

In here for traffic (sorry.)

I had a prescription for pain relief faxed through to a pharmacy 2 days ago and I've realised I'm not going to have enough to last after tomorrow.

Due in work first thing Monday - won't have a chance to see the doctor.

What do you think the best thing to do is? Should I call OOH today or tomorrow?

Appreciate advice :) thanks.

They don't have a muscle relaxant in

I take dihydrocodiene and paracetamol amongst other pain killers, the only thing that helps with my spasms is diazepam.

poemontheocean · 20/02/2016 11:30

Well whatever is in it, it's stopped the spasming! Grin

Massive x-post there, sorry.

I too was told by gp dihydrocodiene is a muscle relaxant but it isn't.

LIZS · 20/02/2016 11:32

When I recently had back/hip/leg pain I couldn't be prescribed strong painkillers (such as NSAIDs) due to asthma. The main thing which helped was heat, and particularly Deep Heat pads which stick on and are not medicated. You really need to see your gp to get referrals and to take a more specific approach.

pudcat · 20/02/2016 11:32

You can buy OTc Solpadeine Max Tablets: Paracetamol 500mg and codeine 12.8mg

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 20/02/2016 11:32

Solpadeine Max is 12.5/500 and you can buy that OTC at most chemists. That's got to be better than 10/500?

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 20/02/2016 11:34

Oh yeah - 12.8. Blush

SmokingGun · 20/02/2016 11:34

You can get 8/500 co-cocodomol OTC, solphidiene or something similar.

frikadela01 · 20/02/2016 11:34

Was just coming on to say try solpediene max. You'll get a higher dose of codeine that you had with the prescription and it's cheaper than a prescription.

poemontheocean · 20/02/2016 11:34

I probably sound like I'm being awkward here - I'm not - but I really think I need something prescribed.

I tried OTC things on Wednesday and also in the middle of the night last night including heat pads and many of the things listed, and if anything the pain was getting worse (obviously not meaning that they made it worse just that it wasn't helping.)

That was why I rang OOH originally - thanks :)

Blush lots of cross posts there!

SmokingGun · 20/02/2016 11:36

But the OTC medication is stronger than the prescription you have been given? Confused

SecretSpy · 20/02/2016 11:38

Don't underestimate the power of the placebo effect of a Dr prescribing something and telling you it contains a muscle relaxant Smoking Wink

poemontheocean · 20/02/2016 11:39

But it wasn't working Smoking, and i won't pretend to understand how or why but there must be something in what i was prescribed which stopped my back spasming.

As I've said it's not relieved the pain but I can live with that - it was the strong sense of everything 'locking' which was petrifying uncomfortable.

OP posts:
MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 20/02/2016 11:40

OP, most OTC is 8/500 and won't help much. If you ask specifically for Solpadeine Max you'll get 12.8/500 which is the strongest OTC codeine you can get.

You can get it in tablet form or dissolvable, if one didn't work too well the other might. You can also get more than a couple of days worth but you MUST see your dr too at some point as codeine is highly addictive.

GetSchwifty · 20/02/2016 11:41

If you want more co-dydramol to be prescribed you will have to call ooh and see if they might fax over a prescription to a pharmacy. Will someone be able to collect the medication for you? Failing that I think you need to call your gp on Monday and ask for a home visit.

poemontheocean · 20/02/2016 11:42

Quite possible Secret

I mean, I'm certainly not in the habit of running to the doctor whenever I've scraped my knee and when I first experienced discomfort on Tuesday I was inclined to grimace, swear and get on with things but it has been very painful and more to the point limited my movement.

I can't drive, I can't put my socks on, am struggling to wipe my bum (thankfully the tablets also seem to have a 'clogging' effect!) - trust me, I am pretty miserable and fed up and just want it to go away!

But the hows and the whys aren't important really. I just for whatever reason need a prescribed medication and given its the weekend will struggle so needed advice on that - not sarcasm :)

Yes thank you get, my brother kindly took me on Thursday in exchange for a pizza!

Serioussteve · 20/02/2016 11:45

Co-Dydramol contains dihydrocodeine - stronger than normal codeine.

Paramol is the only OTC painkiller that contains dihydrocodeine.

Ameliablue · 20/02/2016 11:50

If you have enough medication for the weekend surely the best thing is to phone doctors first thing Monday.

tinyterrors · 20/02/2016 11:50

If it's a back spasm no amount of painkillers is going to work ime, even morphine is pretty rubbish. You need a muscle relaxer such as diazapam. I was on morphine and naproxen which hardly made a dent in the pain, 2mg diazapam took about 30 minutes to reduce it to a dull ache.

Either phone ooh or try and get there today and tell them you need something stronger. It took me three agonising trips to the gp to get diazapam but the relief was worth it. I doubt they'd give you diazapam without seeing you, I get back spasms every few months and the gp still insists on seeing me before prescribing a few days of medication.

poemontheocean · 20/02/2016 11:56

It would be Amelia except I really do have to go into work.

LIZS · 20/02/2016 12:00

It would be Amelia except I really do have to go into work.

You really can't spare half an hour to get the pain relief more effective and enable you to function better at work.

littledrummergirl · 20/02/2016 12:00

You can usually get Otc meds cheaper than on a script as well. Saving both you and the NHS.

poemontheocean · 20/02/2016 12:00

It wouldn't be half an hour lizs, I don't work locally.
