To find bump nicknames a bit strange

I understand nicknaming the baby before it's born, and the couple using that occasionally between themselves- jellybean, or pip, or what have you.

However someone on my FB has nicknamed their baby Li'l Fishy, and they have referred to it as Li'l Fishy constantly. I thought nicknames happened organically, but friends and family were informed of the bump nickname they had decided upon. She is a bit of a pregzilla tbh, so I'm probably BU purely due to the amount of times I have read and heard the name Li'l Fishy over the past few months, but I was quite surprised when they announced the baby as "Baby Li'l Fishy"

That was a few days ago, no other name yet... Maybe they are going to stick with the nickname forever!

My friend was nicknamed 'Fred' as a bump and it has stuck. She's still Fred to everyone at nearly 50. But L'il Fishy? Bleaugh!

BreadPitt · 19/02/2016 17:01

And here was me thinking nothing could beat the 'Twincesses'....

Nodney · 19/02/2016 17:02

Well my mum always called my baby bump my "lump". Any name would have been better than that!

MrsMook · 19/02/2016 17:04

My bumps had novelty names as a pun on our surname, in the vein of Eileen Dover and Ben Dover. I didn't find out the sex either time. My first one in particular was a huge and wriggly bump which very much felt like it had a life of its own and deserved a name.

KC225 · 19/02/2016 17:09

Should have been Piff and Puff

SchnooSchnoo · 19/02/2016 17:27

My first was called Tarquin and my second was called Egbert. They were both girls in the end, so unfortunately, so we couldn't use them! Grin.

They both have even more ridiculous nicknames now, though!

SmallBee · 19/02/2016 17:28

YANBU.
With DD1 I called my bump various things but never settled on a specific nn. However my in laws insisted that we come up with an official one for them to use, I didn't really want to but they were very insistent so I just picked a name they could use.
When telling them about this pregnancy it was one of the first things I was asked. I'm going to let my DN pick.
I don't mind nicknames but for some reason I'm not a fan of an 'official pregnancy nickname '.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 19/02/2016 17:33

Lil Fishy is grim. Poor baby.

Then again my bump was called "Ozzy" because in the first scan she looked like she was doing the rock on symbol so my dad nicknamed the bump Ozzy and it stuck for the rest of the pregnancy (didn't find out what we were having). In fact DD almost was Ozzy Wink

OwlinaTree · 19/02/2016 18:08

First one titch. Second one the bean. Third one Ced. Only really between my and dh, everyone else would just call it the baby I suppose.

cashewnutty · 19/02/2016 18:43

My bump was named Humpty for very obvious reasons. I was huge!

LarrytheCucumber · 19/02/2016 18:44

My last one was Bumpsadaisy.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 19/02/2016 18:47

There's nothing wrong with my little Fuckie.

TheCatsMeow · 19/02/2016 18:52

I also hate naming the baby before its born. It's just wrong.

Why?

Mermaid36 · 19/02/2016 18:56

I'm pregnant with twins and they are generally "the babies", or if I'm feeling particularly drained, "the parasites"..... In a minute of hilarity (and as a massive geek) I am also my own Borg collective, and DH has occasionally referred to me as the Borg Queen.....but none of the above would ever go on FB....

BreakfastAtStephanies · 19/02/2016 18:59

Lil' Fishy is just disgusting.

Baby should not be named until it arrives ( I may be superstitious ) although I am all for bonding with baby before it is born. That is what scan pictures are for, and finding out the sex of the baby should you wish to do so.

I had a weird thought when pg that the baby is a parasite inside me. Was even more weird when I discovered that my DM had had the same thought when she was pg.

I do however love BabbaLump ( and TeddyLump ! - cries. ) Just brilliant.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 19/02/2016 19:01

Mermaid 36 - total cross post about the parasite ! I was still typing and had not seen your post. Just shows . . .

hazellnut56 · 19/02/2016 19:01

I'm 39+2 and we have called my bump "smudge" throughout, it came about when I had a super early scan (we waited 3 years for this baby) and baby was literally a "smudge" on a screen ! I don't want to refer to baby as the name we have chosen until they have safely arrived. All my friends refer to it as smudge also ! Hehe x
Do not like lil fishy ! Ich...!

honkinghaddock · 19/02/2016 19:09

We gave both bumps nicknames. They were proper names but not ones we were thinking of using. When ds1 was stillborn we decided the nickname would be his official name because it was the one we had known him by.

Amummyatlast · 19/02/2016 19:10

I found it helped with bonding to talk to my bumpy boo. But I wouldn't have called her that in public.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 19/02/2016 19:29

Also OP, have you ever had Tea On Everest ? Intriguing.

sparkleface · 19/02/2016 19:42

Mine is called Mr Baby. I like to inject a bit of formality into proceedings.

ShesAStar · 19/02/2016 19:52

Lil fishy is so irritating. I would unfriendly her until it's born. Or make a really ugly collage of a fish/baby for her card when it's born.

Yoghurty · 19/02/2016 20:16

Oh god. This isn't new- I'm 35 and my parents named the bump/me 'Doris'. NN stuck and up until I was in my teens, my dad's workmates who were meeting me for the first time would say 'oh, this must be Doris'. I think they thought they'd really named me that and were being polite Grin I hated it. I'm slightly more nostalgic now I'm much older- but I cringe at the 'Tink' 'peanut' and 'blob' that I've heard friends name their bumps!

Tangofandango · 19/02/2016 20:44

I call my daughter's bump/baby "Bubbalicious". We don't know the sex of the baby and can't call it "it". I only use that when I'm talking to my daughter or the bump though.

A friend called her bump "Widget", that was at the time of the John Smith's bitter adverts "Widget, I've got a widget, a widget I have got". 25 years on the daughter is still called Widget, or Widge, by everyone.

PedantPending · 19/02/2016 20:47

I have a friend, who was nicknamed Tim when he was expected. His parents did not know if he was going to be a boy or a girl. When he was born, second son, they asked themselves if they should actually call him Tim, well Timothy. They didn't, went for John Andrew, but to this day he is known as Tim!
Was very high up in NATO, which made things interesting!
