to ask what time your children get to bed?

For various reasons the bedtime routine I've had for my children (DS6 and DD3) has fallen by the wayside, basically I was hospitalised then was recovering and v tired, and so DH took over care of the kids in the evening. DH has done a great job but now the nighttime routine seems to take forever, the DC are used to staying up later and now they rarely make it into bed and asleep before 10:30. My 3 year old is the worst, she seems full of energy at 10pm at night but she needs her sleep!

My husband is quite relaxed about this but I think it's way too late. Now I'm feeling better I've taken over the evenings again and I'm just wondering, what time do people normally get their 6 year olds and 3 year olds to bed?

My 7 yo is in bed by 7:30-7:45. Lights out 8pm on school nights. In bed at 8pm lights out 8:15-8:30 weekends and holidays. He's currently snuggly watching the Simpsons

Stillwishihadabs · 16/02/2016 19:48

Age 6 it was 7:30-8pm. For a wake time of 6:30-7.

WhiteBlueDaisies · 16/02/2016 19:49

1 & 3yo.
Upstairs at 6.15, bath, one story each and in bed by 7pm.

They don't cope well with late nights and are miserable for a week. Which can be annoying on the odd occasion I actually do want them to stay up.

Parker231 · 16/02/2016 19:50

When they were little it was never before 7.30 - 8 o'clock as we both worked full time and didn't collect from nursery until 6.30. As they got older and started school bedtime gradually got later as they started after school sports activities. By the time they were 11 they decided themselves when to go to bed. They both liked their sleep so rarely was an issue ensuring they went to bed at a decent time.

redhat · 16/02/2016 19:51

DSs 10 and 8. Both go up at 7.30. DS1 can read until 8.15 Ds2 can read until 8. Then it's very firmly lights out and sleep. They get up at 6.30.

bornwithaplasticspoon · 16/02/2016 19:56

Dd is 9 and on school nights is in bed by 8, lights out by 8.30. Weekend/school hols she gets about 30 mins longer.

karen912 · 16/02/2016 20:01

My 3 year old and 5 year old go somewhere between 7 and 7.30. They get up then about 7am.

MySordidCakeSecret · 16/02/2016 20:02

10month old and nearly 6 yr old both have a bedtime of 7pm.. but we sort the baby first so often for the older one it's more like half 7

LilacAndLovely · 16/02/2016 20:04

Ds's are 8 and nearly 6. We don't have a set bed time, but it will be sometime between 7 and 8 on a school night and usually still by 8.30 on a Friday or Saturday.

Every so often that goes out of the window, like today (but it's half term so it doesn't matter)...we went swimming, stayed far longer than we should have so they were 3.30 having lunch, 7pm having dinner. They're nowhere near ready for bed so will probably be up until 9.30 or 10 tonight.

startrek90 · 16/02/2016 20:07

My nearly 2 year old Ds goes to bed 7pm. Sometimes (if we are out late) he goes down 7:30pm. Any later and he tantrums and doesn't get to sleep and has a disturbed night. I think you just need to grit your teeth and be consistent in the face of tantrums.

Ds is terrible to get back into a routine but I just keep going and after 2/3 days its sorted until the next time Wink

At the minute we struggle with naps. If he doesn't have one he is awful but he is refusing to take one. No idea what is going on.... Confused

Bragadocia · 16/02/2016 20:08

DS has recently turned 6; I came down from putting him to bed 10 mins ago. Hopefully he'll be asleep by 8.30, although it can be later. This morning he woke rather late, at 8.15am, but generally wakes at 7.30am every day.

PagesOfABook · 16/02/2016 20:10

Not all children need the same amount if sleep. My DCs age 4 and 6 both go to bed at 9 - often only fall asleep at about 9.20 or 9.30 - and are awake at 7.30 in the morning

They are both happy with lots of energy during the day

jadorecakesnbiscuits · 16/02/2016 20:14

My 7 month old and 2 and a half year old have bath, story and drink then teeth brushed and in bed by 7. Sometimes they sleep through, sometimes they get in with me half way through but I feel like sticking to the routine regardless of what's going on benefits us all. If I try and keep my toddler up later he falls apart by about 8:30 and is trying to get into bed anyway.

omri · 16/02/2016 20:14

We got into a bad rut of bed at 9.30. I work full time and not home til 6.30 so I was happy to get to spend some time with them in the evenings. But have worked on bringing it back as it meant I really never had any quiet relaxing evening time with dp.
We are now in bed mostly by 7.30pm... Asleep at 8pm. Wake at 7.30am.

They are 4 and 2

Mia1415 · 16/02/2016 20:15

My 3 year old is in bed by 6.30pm.

nellyflora · 16/02/2016 20:16

Mine are 8, 6 and 17months I have them all in bed bathed and had story by 7pm. I need my space in the evening

Gatehouse77 · 16/02/2016 20:17

Up to Y2: 7pm

Y3/Y4: 7:30pm

Y5: 8pm

Y6/Y7: 8:30pm

Y8/Y9: 9pm

Y10: 9:30pm

Y11: 10pm

Y12: 10:30pm

That's as far as we've got!
Caveat - our eldest has MH problems and tiredness can be a contributory factor hence he still has a 'bedtime'. This is not necessarily when they go to sleep but it's their lights-out time. If they want to read they get into bed earlier. They have to turn gadgets off half an hour before bedtime and are not allowed them upstairs.

We've always been firm about bedtimes but it's not an exact science and there is/can be flexibility.

Beth2511 · 16/02/2016 20:18

We find dd is happiest and sleeps best if she goes down at 8pm. Every so often her father or grandma will let her nap past 3.30 and for every half hour past then adds another hour onto bed time.

Dd is 15 months

MrsMook · 16/02/2016 20:19

2 and 5 here. Bed time starts about 8-8.30 and lights off 8.30 to 9. Both seem happy and sufficient in sleep. If they go to sleep earlier then they wake early. Usual wake up time 7am onwards. 2 yo needs less sleep than 5 yo, although he still naps most days.

I'd wean the routine back until you find the time that works for you.

witsender · 16/02/2016 20:21

5.5 and nearly 4, bed around 7...awake around 6.

ghostyslovesheep · 16/02/2016 20:25

7 year old - bed at 8pm lights off 9pm

11 and 13 year olds - bed at 9pm lights out at 10pm

weekends it varies - oldest 2 like staying up for The Last Leg!

BabyGanoush · 16/02/2016 20:29

The 3 yr old anytime between 7-8

The 6 yr old at 7:30

My 11 yr old now goes to bed st 8:30

The 13 yr old at 9:30

But maybe I am draconian...it's just that they really seem to need their sleep

Doing plenty of exercise/activities during the day means they are ready for bed by then.

At age 3 and 6 I reckon they could do with 1-2 hours outdoors exercise daily (maybe I am treating them like dogs Grin), even if it's just walks or playing outside.

Artandco · 16/02/2016 20:30

4 and 6 year olds -9pm school nights

No bedtime weekends and holidays, they usually go 9-11pm depending on what we are doing. They will happy nap in the day weekends and holidays if needed.

twirlypoo · 16/02/2016 20:32

My Ds is 4 in a few weeks, he goes up between 5pm and 6pm Blush he sleeps till 630-730 though which is when we need to get up, so a later bedtime just leaves him knackered.

I can't imagine an 8pm bedtime now for him - when do you have time to get stuff done?!

Haroldplaystheharmonica · 16/02/2016 20:36

DS1 (11) goes around 8.45 and is asleep by 9pm. Two nights a week a week he goes at 10pm after his activities.

DS2 (8) goes around 8pm and is asleep soon after. Up by 7.30am.

Weekends are a different matter, maybe 10-10.30 on Fridays and later on Saturdays if we're out (it was 1.30am last weekend)
