To ask if no added sugar squash is really that bad?

I have a 2 year old who drinks diluted apple juice (1 part juice and 4 parts water) and a 6 year old who drinks rocks blackcurrant squash. The dentist was horrified when I told her this. She said they should be drinking no added sugar squash. My friends mostly use robinsons no added sugar for their DC. I had always been wary of sweetness though, my dad told me they are not good for us. How bad are they? I am thinking of changing to sugar free squash but something is telling me not too!

"I'm not sure acesulfame + sucralose is any better than aspartame?"

Why? Even assuming aspartame is bad.

Lucked · 15/02/2016 21:11

My dentist was happy with diluted fruit juice, we do the same concentration as you but she said as long as it was 50:50 not to worry. Her opinion was that no added sugar diluting juice was worse for teeth as the natural sugars are relatively high.

I give them what they want with meals but they just have water available between.

Supportingeachother1983 · 15/02/2016 21:20

lucked that's interesting, my dentist said apple juice from concentrate was the worst thing I could give my DC even though I water it down. It's so confusing isn't it? Ideally they would drink enough water but they don't as I stupidly introduced juice from one year of age not knowing any better at the time.

Stevia is supposed to "natural" and that tastes bad as well. I dont touch robinsons because all artificial seeeteners taste bad. I was so annoyed when nestea went to stevia.

janethegirl2 · 15/02/2016 21:42

All artificial sweeteners taste bad to me, I'd rather drink wine or full fat fruit juice.
NAS drinks are vile and not worth the packaging.

Adeleslostbeehive · 15/02/2016 21:44

It's amazing that so many MN posters have such strong feelings about how disgusting sf squash yet it sells in enourmous quantities? You're obviously unusual.

bruffin · 15/02/2016 21:47

Apparently it is genetic and i think its something like 20% can taste it.

SaucyJack · 15/02/2016 21:48

The "natural" argument doesn't hold much water with me anyway.

Cocaine is natural. Doesn't mean I should give it to my 2 year old.

And obviously sugar isn't as bad for you as cocaine..... but it really really isn't very good for you at all either.

evilcherub · 15/02/2016 21:49

I buy the Sainsbury's one which uses sucralose.

RunnerOnTheRun · 15/02/2016 21:51

Adele - people buy it because they and their children are addicted to it. We aren't unusual for not drinking it we are just not hooked on it and trying to justify it.

Adeleslostbeehive · 15/02/2016 21:53

People are not addicted to sugar free squash. That's hysterical!

ghostyslovesheep · 15/02/2016 21:53

addicted? so sugar free squash is addictive?

but sugar isn't!

RunnerOnTheRun · 15/02/2016 21:54

Ghosty, yes full sugar AND sugarfree squash are addictive!

bruffin · 15/02/2016 21:54

Sugar isnt addictive, that nonsense came from a poorly researched book

Adeleslostbeehive · 15/02/2016 21:55

Sf squash isn't addictive. Whats in it could you be addicted too? Addicted how?

Sorry but these posters are coming across as very Tin foil hat with no indication there is any knowledge behind those views.

janethegirl2 · 15/02/2016 21:55

No, vodka and ribena can be addictive

ghostyslovesheep · 15/02/2016 21:56

oh Runner that's concerning can you post a link to some science facts to back that up - I'm craving some Robinson's now

Adeleslostbeehive · 15/02/2016 21:58

I have the Robertsons tremors!!

The robinsons that still doesn't contain artificial colours, preservatives or aspartame, that is

logfiresspit · 15/02/2016 22:00

So I thought there was a metabolic issue - I can't remember the exact details, but your body is tricked by the sweet taste into secreting insulin to deal with the sugar it thinks it's got; this then leads to a sugar low, and (doubtless very eventually, in some cases etc. etc.) to insulin resistance and potentially in the end to type 2 diabetes.

Can someone better informed than me confirm/pour cold water on this??

RunnerOnTheRun · 15/02/2016 22:00

Sucralose is addictive for one. All artificial sweeteners create an artificial need for more. Have a little read, or take it up with a scientist.

Adeleslostbeehive · 15/02/2016 22:00

I don't need to. They're not addictive

ghostyslovesheep · 15/02/2016 22:01

I'm jonesing right now for some barley water

RunnerOnTheRun · 15/02/2016 22:01

Confirmed logfiresspit. In a round about way!

ghostyslovesheep · 15/02/2016 22:01

I will read - post some links for us to do so

SaucyJack · 15/02/2016 22:02

Sugar is addictive- as can be anything that raises dopamine levels within the brain.
