To think my dishwasher might be the best thing ever?

I never thought I needed one. I hate washing dishes. But so does everyone else.

I won some vouchers for a department store just before Christmas and could see myself spending them on ridiculous shit in the sales, so instead I bought a dishwasher. And it's bloody brilliant.

The sink is empty. The drainer is not stacked like the leaning tower of Pisa. I've made a curry, a cake and banana bread yet my kitchen looks clean. I don't have to stand at the sink after everyone else has sloped off to digest their dinner.

Has anyone else been totally blown away by something so simple/obvious?

I used to sneer at dishwashers, maid the think them a necessity at all. Then we moved to a house with one.....OMG. I looooove mine. The first one broke, bought a new one same day for next day delivery. Can't life without it.

Bambinho · 14/02/2016 22:30

This is very reassuring! I'm just finalising new kitchen plans after being dishwasherless in my current kitchen for 20 years. An almost throwaway remark by the kitchen designer about fitting a slimline dishwasher in got my mind whirring and though it means sacrificing a cupboard (painful in a small kitchen) I'm getting excited about having a tidy kitchen.

I'm wondering, do I need to buy extra things like tea spoons and chopping knives for when the dishwasher is being filled/running?

Katedotness1963 · 14/02/2016 22:33

I love ours! However, I hate emptying it with a passion. I have been known to do dishes by hand to avoid emptying it. Fortunately youngest DS doesn't mind doing it.

Topseyt · 14/02/2016 22:35

See how you go at first Bambinho, but yes, you will very likely find it a good idea to get some extras of crockery and cutlery so that you don't keep running out.

Grilledaubergines · 14/02/2016 22:37

Best invention ever. Had one growing up in the family house and didn't consider not getting one when I got my own home. The one I have now is split, so top draw and bottom drawer, which can be used independently, and I love it so much.

SquidgeyMidgey · 14/02/2016 22:37

They're ace! We got our first one about 4 years ago after staying in a holiday house with one. Bloody fantastic things.

imwithspud · 14/02/2016 22:38

YANBU. I love ours. We didn't have room for one in our old house and I felt like I was spending half my life in the kitchen washing bloody dishes, washing up is one of my least favourite household jobs.

We've moved since and now have a slimline one, and although as a family of 4 it's on 2, sometimes 3 times a day most days, I would rather have our slimline one than no dishwasher at all! They save so much time, and they're cheap to run too. We recently upgraded after the one that came with this house conked out (it was around 10 years old anyway) and it's fab. Bit of a first world problem I know, but those few days without a dishwasher were horrid. I love my shiny new white goods appliance though.

If we ever move again the kitchen absolutely must have space for a dishwasher. No compromising on that one I'm afraid.

Bambinho · 14/02/2016 22:38

Thanks Topseyt I've been eyeing up all manner of kitchen equipment wondering if I need to get an extra one, just in case.

midlifehope · 14/02/2016 22:38

Yes I love mine almost as much as my shiny new funks dryer after 15 years without. Now my tumble dryer - I love!

Anomaly · 14/02/2016 22:40

Another who is a big fan. Ours broke recently and while I was waiting the few days for the replacement I bought paper plates and plastic cutlery as I couldn't face the washing up.

My MIL drives me mad when she visits because she starts hand washing bits and pieces (badly) so the dishwasher never properly fills up. I just don't understand why you would do that when there is a dishwasher sat there??

BloodyDogHairs · 14/02/2016 22:45

There's nothing I like better than switching on the dishwasher and washing machine then closing the kitchen door.

KC225 · 14/02/2016 22:53

This is the best thread ever as I am about to have my first. Like Bambino we are planing a new kitchen and moving in at the end of April. I am so excited. I will be a little PFD (precious first dishwasher) but I am expecting my life to change.

imwithspud · 14/02/2016 22:56

My mil washes things then puts them in the dishwasher. Why is that? I get giving things a quick rinse to get bits of food etc off before loading but she gets the washing up liquid out, fills the bowl up and everything. I was Confused when she offered to do the washing up after dinner here for the first time.

Seems to defeat the object of having a dishwasher in the first place.

FloatIsRechargedNow · 14/02/2016 23:00

I call mine my Best Friend

yummytummy · 14/02/2016 23:03

I have never had one in all my 30 and several years and never missed it. Am i missing out? Hoping to move soon so is looking for a new house with one in already essential?

GinBunny · 14/02/2016 23:04

I'm so jealous of you all! Got my first dishwasher before Christmas and I HATE it, I really fucking hate it. I chose it from a review of the best 10 dishwashers, it was the only slimline one listed so I didn't do any more research. Bottom line is - it doesn't clean properly. It has one job ffs. It can take 3 washes for everything to look clean on the hottest longest cycle - and if you can see what's not clean what's still there that you can't see?
I've emailed the supplier and told them it's not faulty it's just shit and asked them to take it away. They're response was to do a maintenance wash Hmm

KoalaDownUnder · 14/02/2016 23:06

YANBU!!!!!!

I live alone with a dog.

I bought myself a dishwasher six months ago...just a mini slimline one, so it doesn't take days to fill.

I am sure my family judge the fuck out of me for laziness and I DO NOT CARE. I work bloody hard, and I used to detest having to plan meals, shop for food, prepare the food, and wash up after the food all by myself...usually at nearly midnight.

I cook way more now, and am eating more healthily.

I love it so hard!!! Grin

Battleshiphips2 · 14/02/2016 23:07

The dishwasher and Tumble dryer both broke about 2 weeks ago, one on Wednesday and one on Thursday. Had to wait for about a 5 days before replacements came. When they did I sat in the kitchen with the dishwasher, dryer and washing machine running all at the same time and I felt a little emotional. Couldn't live without any of them. The dishwasher is by far my favourite though.

KoalaDownUnder · 14/02/2016 23:10

yummy, yes - get one!

It depends how you value your time, I suppose, but I'm sure as hell never going back to being dishwasherless!!

And I had never had one before, and thought them overrated, and a silly indulgence (Shock at self!!)

KC225 · 14/02/2016 23:10

Gin - dare I mention PND (post new dishwasher) you have clearly not bonded with your new arrival.

imwithspud · 14/02/2016 23:18

Gin at the risk of sounding patronising, do you use salt and rince aid and are they topped up regularly? Also what tablets are you using? I find Finish Quantum Max the best by far.

imwithspud · 14/02/2016 23:20

Yummy I think a lot of people don't see the fuss until they actually have one. Once you get a dishwasher, you can never really adjust to going back to not having one, imo.

landrover · 14/02/2016 23:21

I have 2 dishwashers! (smug emotion!!!!!) They are drawer type ones, fab!

Ughnotagain · 14/02/2016 23:21

I'm getting one in a couple of weeks. I'm SO EXCITED.

BlahBlahfuckingBlah · 14/02/2016 23:22

My dishwasher is a week old and I love it so much. How I survived 37 years without one I'll never know, my mother thinks I'm the laziest beast on earth but she knows nothing. Did I mention I love it?
