To fly long haul with a toddler

We are thinking of a holiday in Central America at Christmas. DS will be 22 months. Is this a terrible idea? DH thinks flying long haul with a toddler will be a disaster that he will annoy everyone and his ears will be popping.

I think it will be difficult to entertain him but the holiday will be much much cheaper whilst DS is under 2.

AIBU to consider it?

dd is 13 and we've flown long haul since she was a baby. We've never had a problem, but she's always been the sort of child that you can entertain with sticker books, colouring etc. It might be different with the kind of toddler who always needs to be on the move.

I agree with everyone who says book a seat for your DS. We took dd to Australia when she was 18 months and were tempted to make the most of her being under 2 and not book a seat. So glad we didn't do that. It would have been unbearable to have her on our laps for that length of time.

My DC is 2 and we have taken her long haul numerous times, and she has been fine.
I have taken her quite a few times on my own on a 9 hour flight and have never booked a seat either. It has always been fine for us. The last time she was a bit wriggly and the 9 hours were a little arduous but we survived!
Lots of activities, toys, books, snacks, walks up and down the cabin, nappy changes (always an underrated activity if you ask me).
I would go for it.
