To try and diet while breast feeding?

So, DC2 is arriving soon and I'm feeling like a whale and planning how I'll shift all this blubber when he arrives.

Am I going to do myself, or him, an injury if I'm dieting at the same time as BF? I don't want to end up with short supply or low nutrition milk for him but I'm feeling so utterly revolted at getting so fat.

I mentioned my plans to diet to a friend and you'd think I'd said I wanted to feed the baby bottles of gin she was that adamant that it was a no-no.

Last time around I believed all that BS about BF burning loads of calories so I ate loads of cake and lo and behold put on 2 stone.

To be honest OP if you stick to 2000 calories a day and your breastfeeding, the weight will come off pretty easily - just get a calorie counter app and avoid the cake!

you're Blush

It's not really a diet if your eating sensibly.

I did while I was pregnant and lost half a stone.

I'm enjoying the lean in 15 cook book atm.

I'm not good with carbs at all, but it's split into carbs free recipes and carb ones so you can do a bit of both!

thedetective how are you portion sizes?. I find most people i know who 'cant' lose weight just eat far too much! I had a 5 feet 2 friend complain she wasnt losing weight despite making everything from scratch but was also eating the same Amount as her very sporty 6 feet 3 husband!!' Theres anportion control plate to help people eat the right amount. Roughly inportion of food eg meat, veg... is fist size, fresh fish flat-hand sized.

Lots of typos down to the wine in my hand...

Do eat sensibly - and I found it was important to keep protein intake high.

BUT, I held on to 10lbs while breastfeeding and no amount of dieting would shift that. When I stopped BF it just fell off. I've never dropped weight so easily in my life.

So don't best yourself up if it isnt going according to plan. Your body will dictate.

LaurieMarlow · 13/02/2016 20:42

Beat yourself up. Damn phone.

TheDetective · 13/02/2016 22:11

Laurie that's what I'm holding on to! I am my pre-pg weight, so shouldn't complain. But after losing so much weight before with SW, didn't think I'd have a problem using it again!

My portions are slightly larger than average. I eat all the shit in site if I don't eat that amount though. My portion sizes have reduced from when I first started SW though.

My appetite was HUGE for the first 6 months of EBF. It's now close to normal now the baby has 3 meals a day.

I've got terrible eating habits and I crashed dieted on and off after DD and my milk supply was absolutely terrible. Ending up weaning her off the breast earlier than I would have liked and all becuase of my own insecurities. Be carefully. Be sensible and be kind to yourself

tbtc20 · 13/02/2016 22:59

OP it's not BS that BF burns calories. Your body will burn more calories than it normally does. It's not carte blanche to eat loads of cake!
If you eat more calories than you use you will put on weight - first law of thermodynamics.

BF is a really good time to eat well and take advantage of your body burning more calories than usual.

I gain a lot of weight in pregnacy (SPD trashes my mobility, and therefore I become more sedentary. I eat more towards the end because of the constant pain and exhaustion). Both times, I've lost the weight while BFing.

I don't "diet", I concentrate on nutritious foods, and reducing empty calories. When I got to the last stubborn lbs, I logged on to MFP, and found that I was eating about 2000 calories which created a small deficit.

I also concentrate on rebuildingy fitness, starting with walking them building up.

It can be done, but it probably needs a bit of thought and attention rather than letting it happen "natually". Being too strict won't be helpful to milk supply.
