AIBU to think this is not a suitable drink for 4 year olds?

Not sure if I am being pfb! I Still water down fruit juice when I get chance (do give it undiluted ic we buy bottles/cartons when out)

What age do kids start on the fizzy stuff/coke?

Pretty sure diet is a worse option than the full fat stuff too!

I'd think the people who organised this were thick but I wouldn't say anything.

Braeburns · 13/02/2016 10:40

I'm surprised at it being offered but in my experience sometimes people with older children don't realise that its not acceptable for younger ones.

I wouldn't offer fizzy to kids but I was amused at this local to me satire : i.stuff.co.nz/marlborough-express/opinion/73270032/SATIRE-Fruit-banned-from-hospital-cafes

I don't know or understand why people give coke and fizzy drinks to their kids. What's wrong with juice, cordial, water, milk? Dd is nearly 5 and would drink all of the above but I wouldn't buy fizzy drinks. I know a time will come when she has parties etc where I will have to cater for all the kids but at a school party for 4 year olds I am shocked they serve cola!

Glassofwineneeded · 13/02/2016 10:59

Our school wouldn't have allowed this at a ks1 disco or a ks2 one!
I understand it's a treat for kids and it's not going to kill them but it should be parents choice and not the choice of school or PTA to give fizzy drinks to others. It really doesn't set a good example.
I don't think YABU At all.

Jw35 · 13/02/2016 11:10

Yanbu it's not just the sweeteners but also the caffeine in coke. I wouldn't like it

miaowmix · 13/02/2016 11:10

A year 6 boy at my daughter's school disco is now known as a 'legend' because he managed 4 cans of Vimto (before throwing up) Shock.

I'm not massively keen on diet drinks full stop, but my 9 year old drinks coke for a treat and I can't get hugely worked up about it being offered... although at that age are parents not there supervising?

Heatherbell1978 · 13/02/2016 11:11

Diet coke worse than real coke. Full of sweeteners and caffeine. I wouldn't be happy about it but everything in moderation. One-off at a party I guess.

witsender · 13/02/2016 11:14

My kids are allowed hot chocolate, honey and lemon or red Bush tea.

Bambambini · 13/02/2016 11:24

The kids just have water at ourprimary school discos. No need for fizzy drinks.

Bambambini · 13/02/2016 11:27

And the kids were happy with water. I was on water duty just outside the hall - kids are out drinking water all the time as they are hot and thirsty. No cost, no sticky mess and they seemed perfectly happy.

SpotOn · 13/02/2016 15:52

But the fizzy drinks are sold to make a profit; there's no profit in handing out water.

At DDs school the disco is a frenzy of sweets and glow sticks. It's all about the PTA raising money. They must make a fair amount as they've become a half- termly thing for KS2.

shinynewusername · 13/02/2016 15:59

This is why many schools no longer offer social events. Who in their right mind would waste time & energy arranging a fun event for kids when the fizzy drink police are coming to slag them off?

PlymouthMaid1 · 13/02/2016 16:20

Beats my why anybody ever drinks that poison ley along gives it to children.

soontobemrsmckeown · 13/02/2016 16:25

When we were on holiday dd was 2 all we could find in resort -All inclusive was fizzy drinks dd spat them out. After speaking to a member of staff she brought in two big bottles of to dilute strawberry juice for her. Dd now 4 still spits out fizzy. She doesnt like how it feels in her mouth. YaNbu.

Primaryteach87 · 13/02/2016 16:26

I think it's a little young, but wouldn't be outraged. Incidentally I WOULD be outraged if they gave them the full sugar normal Coke. That would be madness to my mind!

Helmetbymidnight · 13/02/2016 16:28

But really, you're planning a party for four to six year olds, and you go, "ooh lets get them diet coke!" not even regular coke, lets get them the aspartime stuff, lets not get them squash, or water, or lemonade, but diet coke?

I hope it wasn't teachers who did this, just one dumb arse parent.

ZebraOwl · 13/02/2016 17:01

YANBU

4yos will need scraping off the ceiling from the pure high of the dancing & running about with their friends & if there have been glowsticks etc involved you'll not be walking them home they'll be bouncing like Tigger.

You really don't need to add caffeine to that natural excitement - certainly not that close to bedtime.

My Brownies are 7-10/11 (no 11yos atm but often girls who start late will opt to stay until their 11th birthday rather than move as soon as they turn 10) & I'd not offer them Coke (Diet or regular) - it would never even cross my mind to do so. When we have parties we have lemonade, squash & water.
