I can't see or feel mine. Too much flab in the way. I hope it's still going, because if not I may be dead. (The fact I'm still talking is not proof of anything in my case.)

Wolpertinger · 12/02/2016 22:51

If you are a thin young woman it is entirely normal to be able to see or feel your aorta moving.

If you are 65+ and especially a man, it could be a sign that your aorta is distended and you should see your GP.

However for everyone else it's normal. I miss being able to feel mine, it's now covered in flab Sad

BlackberryandNettle · 12/02/2016 22:51

I have never noticed this on myself, will take a look! Seems from others like it must be normal, if you're really worried (I'd have worried a big vessel feeding a tumour?!) get doc to run bloods!!

Please dont wait until your 65. My Dad was 55 when he died from an aortic aneurysm. (Overweight smoker though, agree with other comments).

SoThatHappened · 13/02/2016 00:35

I had it the other way round.

I always knew about it, wasnt worried about it. I saw many drs frowning at it when they examined me but said nothing.

Until I got one gp who frowned and said your aorta is highly palpable I dont like that...and sent me for an ultrasound.

Shitting myself about having a triple A. But it was just closer to the surface than it should be.

sashh · 13/02/2016 07:19

It is your aorta, everyone has it, some people can see it.

Dr google has told you it is an aneurysm, probably a triple A (AAA) and you are about to die.

If you did have a AAA that had ruptured you would be dead before you read the results on google.

2boys1girlforme · 13/02/2016 09:45

I went to my GP about this as it felt really strong.
He said it wouldn't be an AAA at my age (36 at the time) but had a feel of it anyway and actually called another GP in for a second opinion!
She decided it was fine and just a strong normal pulse.
However I've recently had an echo where they scan all the way down the aorta and nothing was mentioned.

Potatoface2 · 13/02/2016 09:58

you can have bulge in your aorta which will be monitored if detected...when it gets to a certain size you can have an operation on it (a stent is put in) but it has to be detected from symptoms beforehand.....if it isnt detected and bursts or dissects you basically internally bleed out....have seen people survive the massive op (if this happens in a hospital setting) but usually you really dont know anything about it as death is rapid.....more prevailent in men in their 60s plus who smoke...some idiot i watched on tv last night thought she could feel her babys heartbeat, probably was her own aorta!

BumpTheElephant · 13/02/2016 10:12

Yes, I once asked a doctor about it when being seen for something else. She said it was quite normal in slim people. I can see my stomach pulse all the time.

ScarlettDarling · 13/02/2016 10:37

I've been able to see it since I was a child. I remember lying back in the bath and watching my tummy pulsate and my brother cracking up laughing (so must've been v young!!)

I'm 42 and still here!
